Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
Well, before installing the tubs I had planned to clean up the notch and POR-15 it. in the process I found that my sway bar brackets were starting to bend a little at the tips. So I decided to pull them out and run another 2x2 across the notch (actually through both notches) protruding beyond the notches to act as the sway bar end-link brackets as well as stiffen the whole notch/bridge assembly. I'm also relocating the end-link "brackets" (now 2x2) slightly so there won't be as much stress put on the end-links.
I know I know pics... well it's not installed yet, just the old brackets removed and the notch prepped for paint. That involved removing all the hose clamps for the various air lines, etc, zip-tie'ing the lines away from the frame, and wire-wheeling away. While I'm in there I also decided it would be a good time to relocate my upper shock mounts inward to allow me to run a shock that won't limit my rear suspension travel. I ended up going with a shock spec'ed out for a 1984 F150 rear (old vs new): http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1197772667 |
Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
I mentioned before that I replaced all the rear wheel studs with longer ones. Ended up going with NAPA 641-3112. They require the holes to be drilled out just a little bit to 9/16" because of a slightly larger knurl.
Here's a shot of the old vs new: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1197773494 |

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
Frizzle, I like how the rear discs are coming together. I just bought my calipers and pads off eBay and I'm watching some rebuild kits. Those rotors oughta appear tiny behind those 22s!

Friz,
Who's headers are those? They look very nice. :c2: Are you running a LS series engine? |
Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
Nice! Who makes the kit and is it SS or alum coated?

Those Flowmaster pipe kits are nice. They will, however, leave you wanting an extra set of 45* bends since they are designed for longtubes...

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
All the rear brake parts are ready to go. I have have all new bearings front and rear ready to go in. Pads will be here Monday and the ebrake cables sometime this week.

One of my calipers was sent with the wrong bracket. First two show the incorrect bracket (Corvette) and the third is the Camaro bracket: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1197840401 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1197840401 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1197840401 |

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
OK, I've got some more questions on your brakes.
Am I reading correctly that the rear brakes are from a camaro? What year range and what is required to make them work - besides the brackets? Anything? Do they need to be modified to fit a truck 12bolt? Are you running the 5x4.75 bolt pattern or are you staying with the 5x5? I'm going to be running C4 stuff on the front of mine and am trying to figure out what to use to get the same pattern on the rear. Where do "Glock's" brackets come from? I'm familiar with the firearm but not brake brackets. Sorry for all the questions but this sounds like a good way to go and I have easy access to camaro parts. |
Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
Glock is the board member that makes the brackets.
|
Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
I was wondering if that's who that was.
I'm guessing there is a thread on the brakes somewhere? I'll look around for it. Thanks |
Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
OK, I found the thread but no more brackets.....:whine:

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
I think he's planning to make another run of them. He also makes brackets to run caprice/impala calipers. I went with the camaro's to retain a functional e-brake.

Because then you can cut it again!!! Kevin LFD Inc. |

Hey Kevin I started out with a 67 Bug. Rolled it before I even had my license...
I was asked about a parts list for my rear discs. Here it is:

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
Mocked up the rear brakes with the calipers swapped side/side and facing forward instead of toward the rear. I think I'll run them this way. Just looks better IMO and may have minuscule performance advantage over hanging them off the rear of the axle. after the pics I pulled it apart and POR-15'd the axle tubes:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1198042101 http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...g?t=1198042538 See, that's the way they should go. Front calipers toward rear and rear calipers toward front;): http://www.z06-corvette.com/events/2...to-Show-04.jpg |

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
Looks good! I also agree about running the calipers towards the front.
I can't wait for my calipers to show up. |
Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
FYI, some calipers are built to go a certain way to maintain proper pad wear. I know that front calipers on my 914 have the pistons notched so that the pads sit slightly angled.

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
I got my camaro calipers and brackets from the salvage yards. I'll rebuild them sometime.
I always have thought the positioning of the brake caliper really doesn't matter, except for weight distribution, and on our trucks it would be best to have them on the back. That's where I put mine. |
Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
I could see where an argument could be made to put them in the rear for traction. I'm thinking along the lines of unsprung weight. Moving the weight toward the trailing arm pivots would be an improvement in that regard.

It's the same weight, different moment. :) In all reality though, it's so little weight compared to other things, it really doesn't matter. |

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
More progress on the brakes. The hubs have about a 1/16" ridge that prevents the rotors from seating all the way down on the flange. I was able to remove it with careful and even application of a die grinder:

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*
On the fronts the outer corners of the hubs have to be knocked down in order to run the Coys C5 center caps. Here's a before and after plus a little bonus video of my low-tech method
