It's been a long time since I've posted on this thread. We've just been enjoying the truck. Anyhow, we've been fighting a blow-by problem with the 283.... stinking up our cruises. After trying a few things to bypass the problem, nothing helped. It was either pull it out and go through it, or replace it. So I jumped on Craigs to see what was out there. Ended up finding an ad for a freshly rebuilt 327 longblock, never fired for $700. So I called the guy... he said he had no use for it. We're in Santa Fe and the engine was in Albuquerque so I called my buddy to go check it out. He called the guy and talked him down to $500 over the phone! We couldn't get down there fast enough. We got a killer deal... She's super clean and going in the '65 real soon...:metal:

Very cool ride. Really like the color, and attention to detail, that is one sweet ride. Should get a custom plate on the back that says NOT HIS.

I love this truck and the fact that everyone works together to get it running and then painted. Good luck on your engine swap and hopefully the 327 will be an excellent engine for you. I also love the color scheme.

Thanks guys! I can't wait to get that 327 in and see how she runs. It's been a labor of love and I'm glad a fresh engine is going in. :ito:

So we got a call from Carlos on Sunday afternoon. He was all hyped up to do an engine swap. He had to talk us into it, but in the end we went for it. Pulled out the 283, did some cleaning and painting and dropped in the fresh 327. We worked until almost midnight and got about 80% of the swap complete.

At the end of the night we were out of gas...super tired. So we called it a night. I played hookie yesterday to finish it up. Had it fired up before lunchtime. What a beautiful tune!!! She's a good motor... sounds very solid and you can feel the difference in power. SUCCESS!!! :metal:

Man I have read this thread from start to end a couple times, you and your wife have a great combo going on!

Nice to see other people like my wife and I that can share something like this, though to date it has been our convertible Ponitacs for us.
I am just happy that she comes down to the garage to help me on my stepside.

Congrats on the new engine, I bet it is just sweet as hell!! Can't stop grinning for ya....

Re: Progress on my woman's '65 Short/Fleet.

Snuck out of work a tad bit early yesterday with all the parts and supplies needed for the TBI conversion and went to the shop. Carlos and I worked until after 10PM last night and we got it done! What a difference!!!!! It still needs to be fine tuned and a few loose ends still need to be buttoned up, but that 327 runs like a beast with the injection!! We spent a good half hour raising hell on the streets around the shop after we Carlos got it running. I'll be going by the shop again tonight to do the fine tuning and clean up the wiring...

Big thanks to fellow member "turbostar" from Ruidoso, NM for hooking us up with a tank set up with a return line. We ended up just using the sending unit... works awesome!!

Re: Progress on my woman's '65 Short/Fleet.

The truck's running "okay", but we still need to work some bugs out. The junkyard distributor that we are currently running seems to be the culprit. She starts and runs fine, but at cruise speeds you can feel it kind of pulsating. Carlos said it looked a little worn when we dropped it in. So I'll be ordering a new one soon... I'm also going to find another, bigger fuel filter to run as the one that's in there now seems to be a little small for the new, higher pressure system...

Thanks guys!

Here's some bling that needs to be installed. I bought these a few years back from a member that I think is currently banned. They've been up on the shelf since. Anyhow, big thanks again to my friend Danny A (DAN66) for polishing them up and re-doing the black paint. Top notch work! I'll have those 'thingys' on very soon...

Got the new distributor in yesterday. Timed and tuned. Also installed a larger, fuel injection type fuel filter.

Starts on a dime! Runs beautifully... :metal:

May have spoke too soon when I posted this.

We've spent the last few day chasing bugs. I think we finally have success. Carlos adjusted the timing, we converted to an internally regulated alternator, and plumbed in and wired the o2 sensor. It seems to be running pretty good now. I'll give it a few days before I give it the final

Just saw this for the first time, haven't had time to read all yet, but will say your hard work and perservation has resulted in a beautiful truck for that beautiful lady of yours, Kudos to everyone who helped on it also!

Re: Progress on my woman's '65 Short/Fleet.

It's been a while since I've posted on here.

Done a few things to the '65. She purchased a new Champion aluminum radiator from here on the forums and I got that installed. We've also been messing with the TBI issues trying to get that right. Ended up ditching the Holley throttle body and replacing it with a stock one from a '95 350... along with another MAP sensor. It's been running perfect. Hopefully it stays good...

Hope you have better luck with that carter fuel pump than I did, we ate 4 of them up before moving the pump inside the fuel tank, not only are they cheaper they work better and stay cooler. Never figured out what the problem was but inline fuel pump never worked for me....Kieth
