Well I think I got to the bottom of my rear light problems. Looks like it was a couple of problems.
- Bad and old wire - A lot of corrosion - Bad/or loose connection in the steering column harness. So Darrah and I tackled all the above and cleaned all the contact areas. Then we installed the junk yard seat. Darrah even got the chrome cleaned up so we could take a little Sunday drive. Does anyone know what the extra ground wire goes to or is just that a extra ground? |
Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build
Did you get it all working good?

Thanks Scott,
Does anyone know what the extra ground wire is for in Post 525 page 21????? |
Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build
Looks like its for the license plate light...if I'm looking at the right wire....

Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build
Looking good! I just replaced the rear harness and tailights on my truck too. Even with the new harness and bulbs I was having issues with one of the lights. Turned out it wasn't grounding correctly so I ran an extra ground from the tailight housing down to the frame.

Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build
I think if you go to LMCtruck.com website you can see a picture of the complete reverse light assembly including the plug, that might help figure it out.

Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build
I believe reverse lights were an option through out production of these trucks, became madatory/standard in '66
did you chase that wire into the cab? are you sure it is a ground? |

There was no plug for it on the fire wall... it's the same length as the other. |
Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build
Check for continuity. If it is for the license plate then it should come off the brown wire. And like you said if it is the reverse light it would be a separate light green wire.

Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build
My tailite sockets looked like that too. I also had the springs stick down so as not to make contact when plugging in the bulb. Looking good with that fresh wire.

Re: 4D'S "63" GMC Build
The green wire is definitely the reverse wire. There is a separate wire harness for the reverse lights from that connector which installs in the holes in the frame beside the taillight harness. There are ground straps all over these trucks including one mounted from the frame to the rear cross member. Factory reverse trucks, the green wire was moulded with the tailight harness. Dealer installed reverse lights, you had to drill a hole above the tailight harness as it comes out of the firewall beside the gas pedal. A new separate green wire was routed alongside the tailight harness. There's a separate harness on the inside of the cab depending if you were running a 3 speed or powerglide or 4 speed. I believe the switch is the same for a 3 speed manual or powerglide that mounts near the base of the steering columb. It's the same switch they used in the passenger cars. The four speed switch has a finger that has a setscrew that tightens it to the shifter and you have to remove the cup that holds down the shifter ball and replace it with a new cup which holds the 4 speed switch which is different from the 3 speed and powerglide switch.

I just stumbled onto this thread, and I have to say. Great job on the truck, and involving your family.
Definitely dig the exhaust, and the attention to detail. Along with your and your partners mind set of, "Let's try this. If it doesn't work, we'll fix it." It's awesome. And definitley get those girls some pinstriping brushes. haha ;) -Sam. |
