Re: AD Truck Project
Mine was laying in a field with no suspension, so I can understand. If I get some concrete measurements I will post them.

Re: AD Truck Project
Not to change style of trucks here but i positioned mine in the center and where i liked them when i did my frame because the 60-66 wheels kind of sit weird in the wells IMO.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
We face the same problem on the AD trucks. I have tried to center mine. The stock position is just for reference.

Re: AD Truck Project
19504u ..
Check out this link. I know the year model is difference, but further into the article it talks about how to find the center of the wheel well and marking it. http://www.classictrucks.com/tech/12.../photo_04.html |
Re: AD Truck Project
I also saw this thread talking about front axle center lines.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...8&postcount=18 I have my cup kit, rear bags, rear mounts, etc now. I installed my steering rack, and have been doing some measuring and day dreaming about the front cups. |
Re: AD Truck Project
The threads are too long on one side of my thunderbird rack, so I was able to use a short outer tierod on one side. I picked up a longer thunderbird tierod for the drivers side. I will probably get 2 moog outers later and cut the threads down on the passenger side.
I have been trying to at the least go out and look over the truck and think about what I want to work on next every evening. |

Re: AD Truck Project
Here are a few pics of why things often do not get done on the truck project.

Re: AD Truck Project
Nice parts Billy! I'm liking that RC buggy too. Cool picture of some big air.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
Thanks.
The track is a local club track in Yukon at Taylor Park. This is our third season. We have built it up over the last few years and last year put in lights, a scoring booth and bought an amb scoring system. This June we will be hosting our first RC Pro Series event. I picked up some bolts and washers last night, and a 3/4 both for the upper cup. Do, I need grade 8 bolts to bolt in the bags? |
Re: AD Truck Project
I started a little work today before it started to rain and I had to move all my tools under the porch to keep working. Hopefully more to follow.

Re: AD Truck Project
Awesome! :metal:
|
Re: AD Truck Project
Now it is time for lunch and a parts run. The bolt I got to mount the upper cup is too short.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
Can you not find any all-thread that size?
|
Re: AD Truck Project
I will check while I am out.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
Wouldnt have to be that diameter just big enough to go through the mounting hole and hold cup still, right? 1/2 would be plenty i would think.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
I got 5/8 all thread. It should work pretty good.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-3...2/IMAG0259.jpg Getting closer. However everything is just tacked in, but once I get it outside I can see if I got the crossmember in the right place. If so, then things can be fully welded, and I box the frame at the front. I have the drivers side cup started but ran out of time. I was supposed to be at a party a half hour ago. More work tomorrow. I think I will end up trimming the cups down a bit more. |
Re: AD Truck Project
Yeah looks to be too much cup from what i can tell. Can you see if it will lay out where it site or how much more you will have to go?
|
Re: AD Truck Project
Update with more pics later this evening.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
Just read your build (busy workday) Looks good Billy. Nice meeting you this weekend. Later
|
Re: AD Truck Project
It was nice meeting you as well, thanks again. I think bbq time may be approaching.
Did you hear that Scott? I said BBQ! |
Re: AD Truck Project
For the first time since this truck entered the family back in Feb 2010 it now sets on it's own front suspension. Not quite the goal of rolling it outside but close enough. There is a ton of little things to do and rework, but I am pretty thrilled.

Re: AD Truck Project
What was the measurement u laid out for the cross member centerline
Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: AD Truck Project
I don't have it yet, because it may not be correct. I have not wheeled it out so I can see if it is centered. I have posted a few links in the last 3-4 weeks here on this thread that should help you determine your center line.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
This is from one of the threads I linked...
"Go to www.speedwaymotors.com and it gives great instructions. Doing a 53 also. 18.5" from center of front shackle pivot is centerline for MII. I can fax em to u also buddy." I hope it helps. The best thing to do it tack it in and then look to see if you are happy with it before final welding. |
Re: AD Truck Project
Very cool!!! :metal:
What about a laid out pic?? ;) |
Re: AD Truck Project
Not a great video, but I had to balance my phone on the bumper of my crew cab.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
looks great man. luv the gmc and the bag setup, can't wait till I get both. lol
can't wait to see it on the road. |
Re: AD Truck Project
Thanks 99, I am a frequent visitor of your build thread and really like your truck.
We are forecasted for a possible tornado outbreak later this evening, so I did what any sane Oklahoman would do... I worked on my old truck lol. Now for a big picture update. I aired everything up and rolled the truck outside for the first time since Sept 2010. I was finally able to look at the front wheel placement and I am pretty happy with it. Now for the pics. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-n...6/IMAG0271.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_...6/IMAG0272.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1...6/IMAG0273.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-U...6/IMAG0274.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-E...6/IMAG0275.jpg |

Re: AD Truck Project
Congrats on the "roll out" ! She's looking good.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
I know nothing about bags, but that looked good when you were airing it out in the video.:metal:
|
Re: AD Truck Project
Congrats on getting your truck out of the garage Billy. It looks like you hit the wheel base right on. Looking forward to seeing more updates.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
Thanks guys. It was nice to have an update that involved parts going back on lol. I was really worried about the wheelbase, but it worked out.
I rolled it out today and took out the seat frame, gas tank, and stripped the head liner out of it. There was not as much pooh as I expected which was nice. Also, I was dreading that I might find more cat bones in there, but there was not any. Just a mouse or rat skull lol. The tire I put on the passenger side rear didn't hold air, which of course it is up against a wall when in the garage. So, I swapped that tire today for one that was good. I also removed the broken rear window and the dry rotted window seal. It will probably be the weekend before I get to mess with it anymore. But, when I do I think I will clean in the cab more, try to get the stock gauges out, and see about mocking up the steering column. |
Re: AD Truck Project
I got a little work done. Last week I got the truck turned around, with some help from my neighbor and a random guy riding by on a bicycle. Sunday I wanted to start taking the fenders off the rear. I started by breaking every bolt I touched. Then I found out some of the bolts were between the rotted wood floor and the steel floor someone welded over the top of it. After some air chisel and sawzall love, I got it out. I put the rolled up metal on the curb and my friendly neighbor hood metal scrappers had already took it this morning.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-O...0/IMAG0295.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-V...2/IMAG0294.jpg Btw if anyone wants that bumper they can have it. It says Curtis Raborn Chevy, Pauls Valley, Oklahoma on it. |
Re: AD Truck Project
truck is looking good for sure. Can't wait to see it done. what are the plans for the rear? Triangulated 4 link or parallel? what rear end you using? Pardon if it was already mentioned.
love the old gauges. holler at me if you aren't using them. I quite a few sets. |
Re: AD Truck Project
Nice progress Billy.
|
Re: AD Truck Project
Thanks guys.
I have a tri 4 link from Scott's Hotrods waiting to go in. Right now I have a rearend out of a 4wd blazer. I am going to try and use the stock gauges if possible. |
