Brakes and air are plumbed. I think the next task after getting the front end back on will be the fuel system.

Id toss some rust inhibitor like por15 or chassis saver and then coat with the bedliner. looking real good though, you got a great patina on your hands.

Coating underneath fenders is always a good idea, painted or not. We use rubberized asphalt undercoating. It works great to insulate from sound, paint stars (if painted), etc.

Since it's a little more flexible than bedliner, I think it's the better option, but that's just me. I've done the inside of all my fenders with it and I'll be doing underneath the running boards in the spring.

Good news for Popeye...his younger sister "Black Betty" just sold so now he is fully funded to completion. I haven't done a ton of work lately, but I did get the sheet metal mounted for the last time, including one door hung. I will be on an ordering spree taking advantage of the holiday deals over the next few weeks and kicking this build into overdrive.

Haha thanks! But I only take pictures when the space is clean...believe me I can make a royal mess

So I took care of a little project in preparation for the fuel system/tank installation. I wanted to sound deaden and insulate the back of the cab so I took care of that and insulated the roof. Peel and Seal and foil-faced bubble wrap type insulation from Lowe's were used. I heated the Peel and Seal after applying it with a heat gun then rolled it with a seam roller to make sure it's stuck on for good. The insulation was adhered using 3M Super 77 spray adhesive.

All in all a quick, cheap and easy project that should yield a good return. I will probably do more of the floor and some or all of the firewall at a later time.

Re: Project "Popeye"

does the peel and seal have strong odor? Like tar...
Also where did you find at Lowes
Looks great Btw...

Re: Project "Popeye"

No odor, that's more likely with products having a higher asphaltic contect. It's found in the roofing section.

Re: Project "Popeye"

looks good, I'v heard of guys going that route with the deadners. I've searched for a quite a bit on the subject. I've even got the weights from fatmat on the different ones they use for ex. The odor ones come from what most companies use which is the mastic compound, some are just gonna be worse than others.

The one I'm leaning toward and is more money though is the butyl-rubber. Its said to be the best dampening material, some guys sell 50 and 70mil thick.
I'v found 50sq ft of the butyl for $75 50mil thick, not made in china

do you know how many sq ft you got and how much its was?

LEEVON 12-03-2014 10:57 PM

Re: Project "Popeye"

Agree on the butyl rubber materials...definitely better options out there than peel and seal. I bought two rolls 25'x6" for about $16/each and the insulation for about $24, plus some foil tape for a couple bucks.

The Peal and seal is where the flashing is at Lowe's. I like to never found it.

Just went thru your build because I plan to accomplish a very similar setup and you were doing great! What's the story on popeye these days?

Sadly I am still dragging this build out and Popeye is not running yet, however he is not far from being done. What you can see in the pictures are a shortened and completely rebuilt '69-71 non-tilt steering column, brand new glass and rubber, new headlight buckets and guts, and new pin striping. The "Jessica Marie" lettering with angel's wings on the tailgate is a tribute to my sister who passed away in 2010 after I started this build.

I think I need a steering column similar to that for my new project, thanks for the idea. Love the tribute!

It worked out well. I did move the hole in the floor down about 4" and to the driver's side about 3". I thought the column would be fine as-is but once I dis-assembled it for shortening I realized it needed upper and lower bearings and the cancelling cam/harness connection. The shaft, inner and outer tube were all cut and shortened 2". I also had to create my own bearing retainer on the end of the lower bearing. But it all worked out well, shifts and turns very nice.

Getting close to firing her up, tons of loose ends are tied up. The last major systems parts are radiator hoses and transmission cooler lines. I mounted the fuse block and MSD box this weekend, so I will be diving head first into the wiring next. I was going to remotely mount the ignition coils, but I ran out of room and it presented too many challenges so I drilled and tapped the valve covers, and put custom coil brackets there. Still happy with how it all lays out. Ignore the air breather, it's getting the original oil bath (gutted and 4 barreled).

You can't see in the pic, but under the center of the dash is a 3 gauge panel with one tank pressure gauge and two dual-needle bag gauges. I'll get a better pic.

A friend is giving me the biggest rash of crap for not hiding the stuff, but frankly I don't want to have to open a door to push buttons or see gauges. His cars are super-trick though, hidden stuff popping out of everywhere.

I think it all has to do with the style that you are going for. For a streetrod style truck, hidden everything fits with the theme. Your truck has more of an old school vibe and I think someone hot rodding a truck back in the day would have made switches accessible and gauges visible.

Re: Project "Popeye"

First off it's YOUR truck you do what makes you Happy!
Everyone will have their own opinion on what to do,but at the end of the day it's what you like.
It's still fairly neat and tidy not just a cobbled up mess!
I like it..
