Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Still not bought travel insurance or booked a taxi back from the airport…..
Probably should get my finger out and get to it. Packing? Last minute job. Chatting with various people around the States, it seems there may be a fair distance travelled this year. I am going to try make it to Jonesboro Arkansas to see my old friend Steve Hansen (Twice awarded the Purple Heart 💜) and also to see if I can track down a State Trooper I want to speak with. BRING A TRAILER has been mentioned. Still contemplating that. I was chatting with Dennis’ son last night, he is travelling a lot for work right now, but like his dad, he is a funny guy without knowing it. One of the things I enjoy about the travels is getting dirty with the people I meet, sometimes more than other times. Part of our conversation made me chuckle. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds I am so ready for this trip and the planned parts, as well as the unplanned. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
20 years ago I was transferred to the UK as a corporate reward after winning a global incentive.
Load of stuff has happened. Some good, some awesome, some forgettable. One constant has always been having an old car around, also when I lived in SA there was a successions of old cars including a 105E Anglia super, a Baywindow panel bus camper, 63 and 59 Beetles etc. My first UK retro was this 1977 Audi 80 GLS Estate. https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread...-german-museum Apologies for the watermarks. The wheels. 14inch with 185/60's http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19...f/IMG_3323.jpg Centre caps..... I need one more, or more than one, as one is damaged. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19...f/IMG_3331.jpg RIMMMMZZZZZZZZZZZ http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19...f/IMG_3327.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19...f/IMG_3326.jpg With those centre caps....... Opinions ?? http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19...f/IMG_3328.jpg Sold that and bought the 63 Ford Taunus Transit van with the help of @oldbus which was a great car. https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread...raulics-downnn Known as the Grizz-Mobile after Dave marked it before delivery, it has disappeared from the scene, halfway through a radical change by Rayvern hydraulics and a V6 being fitted. No further news. While I had the bus, I built a 5x10 foot Retro-styled Teardrop trailer to tow behind it. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psd9016706.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps54662dce.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps900b1f04.jpg Just how low can you go ? http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psd5010297.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psa898d33b.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps521c7fe4.jpg HOVER BUS http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psd64afd71.jpg Washed and sparkly http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps1d4acfa2.jpg And alongside its stablemate. Bought her an Anglia story below. https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread...100e-youngdans Right...The story as it is.... Up at 4am, after going to bed at 1am, Oldbus, Alex and I went up to Branston to fetch the Anglia. Based on 2002Gimps 2 viewings, it was worth the asking money. We were there at 07.05am, viewed it, and while Dave and Alex loaded, I did the payment and paperwork. That done, we hit the road, had a great Full English brekkie on the M42 , at some services, and got home to my place by 11.30. Offloaded the Anglia, drove it around the block while Dave loaded the car he had fetched, At this time Nicola just got there, after fetching Dave a pair of lower suspensian arms and ball joints for the Capri that I had got him over in Hoo. She was straight into Myrtle, and around the block, afterwhich we all had a brew, chat, relaxed for 10 minutes, before Dave and Alex shot off to Dover, and the texted me from Osnabruck b 9.30pm, home, safe and sound ONCE AGAIN, A public thank you to Dave and Alex for helping me out getting Nicola's car home fast. The car has done less than 20 miles in the last 3 years :o Yesterday we took it for a 30 mile drive, and I have to say,she drives like a dream. Today we spent over 8 hours valeting and T-cutting her. Let the pics tell the story. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...x/P1090001.jpg Note the rubber mats, cleaned in place, as they are soooo perished and hardened, half and half before and after. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...x/P1090016.jpg Contortionists heaven. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...x/P1090017.jpg Inside the boot.... how clean is that ? http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...x/P1090019.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...x/P1090022.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...x/P1090027.jpg Engine bay, cleaned up nicely. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...x/P1090034.jpg I just love this dash. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...x/P1090037.jpg Like a kid, all day. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...x/P1090047.jpg The saddest part of the car, is that the chrome side trim is missing, seller thought he had them, when I got there he said no. Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Postman knocked, no signature needed.
New Slave cylinder https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Got fitted tonight, bled the system……. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds All good. Clutch worked. I also set up the handbrake and made sure it is up to MOT Standard. Locking nuts ensure a decent handbrake. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Job done. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Who remembers this far back??
On delivery, cleaning and bleaching it became apparent that the bonnet/hood has some old damage. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds So a plan was hatched, to buy some covering stickers via a member on here, who is most welcome to make himself known, he has been involved in previous builds. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Too many choices, but in the end I committed to one. This will only happen after a successful MOT test. Looking forward to it. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Seems true…….
Another role in film. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Certainly beats getting broken for parts. Glad I managed to help rescue it. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
"Not a Project" making it in the movies. The "Rezin Rocket" could be next.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Checked in on the flight.
Now we just need the rest of the process to go reasonably smoothly, get my butt in a seat and get to St Louis and see more of the 🇺🇸 Then relax. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Another small job was to refit the hood/bonnet last night.
I am really impressed with the fit of everything as it came together. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds John and I had a few good chuckles while assembling it. Nice tight fit. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds And the two of us actually gloating and wondering what else we could do. Celebrate sounded like a good idea. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds And a short video of the first time I tried the clutch and brakes out. VIDEO: https://youtu.be/JrLxGl6EZAs A short road test is also planned for today over on the farm road. More later, hopefully. Thanks for checking in. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

FIRST SHAKEDOWN ROADTEST Took it to the farm for a first shakedown run. It is light, skittish and the front end tracking etc all need proper setting. However, being as light as it is, this thing feels plenty fast, a bit of Sh!t off a shovel brisk. VIDEO: https://youtu.be/RXpSpILkwuU I am really pleased with it at this point. A few more bits to complete, then MOT I must be honest, I would have loved to hear my dad’s comments on this, both seeing it and driving it. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
For those who knew Ray Sparks aka Indian113 from Monroe, Iowa, I am sorry to announce that he passed away this morning from terminal cancer.
It was the 4th time it came back to him. Ray also had a 60-66 Stepside Ray always had a friendly word of advice, and was generous to a fault with all he met. He leaves a wife and 4 daughters behind. Last time I visited we went to Des Moines in his Caddy. A great day with him and his wife and buddy CraigRK. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psomqlfyu7.jpg RIP Big Guy. |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Back to the 2022 Road trip.
Listed here: https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread...p-grizz-nascar So JB told me he had a surprise for my visit…… And the only clue was that it has wheels, knowing him, it could be between 1 and 18 wheels. So I drove down from Kansas to Oklahoma to visit. Thanks for lunch and the rides JB. I feel pretty privileged and honoured you let me in there. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Of course preceded by a long ride to the state line in this beast. I can only say that the GODZILLA motor kicks like a mule. And the ride is incredibly smooth for what should really shake and break the passengers. And this is no different a smooth ride than other open tops I have driven or been in. A job execution way beyond expectations. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds And a little video. https://youtu.be/8df0VG81INA Yup, much horsepower on this trip. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Soooooo.
Lunch in Oklahoma with JB. He had told me there was some surprise with wheels. But knowing him, it could be anything between 1 and 18 wheels. So the video tells it all. https://youtu.be/9_ABb3E69N0 So we went off for a Mexican lunch and the largest Margarita in history. A very comfortable ride for sure. Got messaged today that the rear silencers may have fallen foul of the impact wrench too. This may be raucous. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Having bought the Microbe completely “Sight Unseen” getting it delivered, starting it up without any silencer or exhaust was interesting.
The delivery guy is a bit (read lot) of a petrol head. @mercdan has bought from him before as well. His tattoos made me smile. Guess the ride. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds I did a drive by after agreeing to buying the car, and kinda just shook my head. It was a rough little thing. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Once it was home the idea was to park it up and leave it alone till the Rezin Rockit was done and MOT’d But then I realised that MOT, Road Tax and insurance would lose me almost two months of unused time if I got it done before leaving on the USA roadtrip so plans changed. I started to clean it up, getting to know it. Realising along the way there were going to be some serious challenges, including the broken off exhaust. Still, as @pauly says……. Onwards. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Thought I would share a quick, easy fix on here.
I have done it on a few cars before and it works like a charm. Raw, unpainted plastics tend to go grey and dull over time. Something the sun and oxidation does. So you can use raw linseed oil, other oils, or plastic refresher in a can, elbow grease or paint the plastics….. I found a heatgun works well, controlled and kept at a safe distance, moving constantly, you will see it change as you go along. Door handles. Before: https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds After: https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Light surrounds…… https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds After https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Bumpers come up in a similar way. Adds “value” by making cars look cared for. Well, fixing it up is caring, Innit? Bumpers Before the heat gun. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Halfway there. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds And after, does look a lot better. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds A lot of cleaning ahead still. More later. |

Pic of paint before and after. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds So an improvement I think. |

More cleaning.
Filthy to some, fine to others. You judge. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Did I mention the upholstery took a bit of work. From this….. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds To this….. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Through this….. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Creating this…. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Hubcaps…. Cleaned up, prepped, painted. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Result. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds More to come. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Ant then……
Magically we now have a baby Subaru, think how much faster go-faster stripes or a noisy exhaust makes a car. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds High https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Low https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Ass https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Nice. Small changes, bit by bit. Also tacked the door panels with the wet vacuum and a bottle of Cif/Jif cleaner. Then reassembled them as they are a bit tatty. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Much better imho. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds @Mercdan also came over for a couple of beers and to run his new buffer over the paint with some of the Q3 compound. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Interesting how quickly the hours add up when you play with cars. Looks better already. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds When I am working in the garage, George often joins me, finding a spot to curl up, and then at other times, he will walk around, inspecting, checking. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Bed time. I am headed to Kentucky and Louisiana tomorrow morning, then over to Texas. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Once I had most of the cleaning done, it started to look better.
Despite all the jobs left to do. Steering wheel does look spectacularly sh!t from 130k miles of use. The colour is not ideal. A black one would have been much better. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Plans were starting to solidify in my head. Stuff I had spinning around for years. . |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Bought a set of wheels and tyres from @redratbike Thanks mate.
They need a bit of cleaning I guess. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds More later for the interested parties. . |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Spoke to Thomas the alloy wheel guy who did the refurbishment of the S10 wheels.
He agreed to £100.00 to remove the tyres and strip and sandblast the wheels for me. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds They do all sorts and sizes, from 18 wheeler steels to 23/24.25 inch alloys and custom work. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds The blasting cabinet takes multiple wheels. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Damage repair, Finishing, Priming and repainting them was up to me. For some reason, the tyres were returned like this, not sure if they use soap to remove as well. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Washed, dried, packed away. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds More to come. Obviously. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Satnav took me back into Oklahoma…….
https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Between Andy and good friend Carol, they have pretty much single handedly built this 5 floor house, with incredible 360’ views from the cupola, but also every floor. The odd contractor came on site to deliver things like foundation concrete, foam insulation etc…… As for the rest…… pure bull headed determination and a lot of grit and sweat. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Snakes abound in this area. I saw this one at the house Carol lives in near the building site. Note the “mask” on it’s forehead. Not pleasant at all. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Also, last night we went out for dinner……. Andy’s treat. THANK YOU for not taking my money Andy 😉 https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Headed home, we stopped for gas as my truck was down to half a tank and next stop,is Thursday in Fayettevill, Arkansas. The sunset was rather delicious, looked like a calendar shot. Straight from my iPhone. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds So that is your 2022 update on Andy Martin. All is good. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
So…….?
What does £100.00 worth of wheel cleaning look like. Imagine me sitting at home,,doing this all by hand, yup….. ain’t ever gonna happen again. Done that before, years ago, still remember it as a sh!t job to do. My time is worth more than the £100.00 And the results speak https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Next job was to get then rims tidied up where they had kissed the kerb/curb before. Trusty tools to the rescue. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Then set them all out and get on with the next step. Etch primer. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Easy. |
