finally got to shift the body over. got all of the mounting holes fixed and other places that were attacked there are mounting plates under the frame where the gas tank goes. crap gets between those and the frame and that orangy-brown stuff does it's charm in there. replace those parts and the corresponding sections of the frame and paint

Drove it! Also, tired troubleshooting the front turn signals. Went ahead and ordered a new harness to see if that helps. I'm thinking I have a bad wire/connection coming from the firewall though. Multimeter shows good signal to the left side but no signal to the right.

Check and make sure the pin did not push back in. I had that problem with one of my pins coming through from the inside through the firewall connector.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I think the firewall connector may be the actual problem. I ordered the other harness just because the sockets have loose connections. Using the multimeter, I get a signal with the ground and left turn sig. I get nothing with the ground and right turn sig (This is from the firewall connector) Rear signals work fine. Appreciate the info!

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Gas tank and rear glass out. Remaining weather stripping removed. Only thing left before removing the cab is the gauge panel and undoing the bolts.

Then, on to the rest of the frame cleanup and then tearing it down for painting and suspension rebuild.

That looks like that took some time getting that body off, I did a body on and it wasn't easy either.

It didn't take that long to do what you see in the pic.started after lunch on sunday. 8 hrs. that body I took off an 84 frame so most of the body mount bolts were not that bad. there was some welding that I had to undo but that was done previous.
I was just thinking, who ever put that body on that 84 frame ( mounting was crude), but they lifted the complete body in one piece and installed it. the doors had never been off before. the hood had been removed at one time in it's life as the bolts were not orig. the fenders, inner fenders nor grille or rad support had ever been taken off. one always wonders if it was a mechanical wonder or just a fluke happening through ignorance.

I am super nervous about taking the body off my 64, with all the floor rust I hope it dosent bend in half:lol:

was that an engine hoist that you used to lift the body?

I found a lower radiator hose for the truck. Had to cut to fit but it worked great. Now I just have to find a top one.

most have rust issues
yes that is an engine hoist that I used

I used a double 2 x 8 tied to the roof thru the frt door opening and a 2 x 12 (stuff that was laying around), put over the top of the 2 x 8's at the front and secured with plumbers hanging strap at the rear( quite a few screw at the back top). I needed almost 36" to clear and you will more than likely run out of lift capacity with that lift. you will see in the picture where I inserted a piece of 6 x 6 for a little more lift( nothing like living dangerously). for that last height adjustments on the corners , I just used a jack-all.. I did do the lift in stages between frt and rear. all in all it was a piece of cake and you can do it all by yourself

You can also put eye bolts in the cab mount holes and run chain or rope to the hoist and lift it. Just use really big washers so the weight is distributed.

little trickier if you have rust in the floor though. there is considerable more weight to a suburban than there is to a p/u. if you have a good floor I don't see why you couldn't. you have to lift the body off the frame to nut it on the bottom side though and the same for installing it. my way gives you a clear shot at it.

Had a new radiator top pipe built to replace the original. I got that installed and started the truck back up today. After filling the new radiator with water and anti freeze. Looks like I have some carburetor issues going to have to dig into that further. Also having problems with the steering column shaft. I'm going to have tear into that and figure out what's wrong. It's part of the power steering that I put in. The splines didn't match up properly or something I don't know really yet what. I could turn the steering about a quarter of the way than it just stopped.

Still working on a carb rebuild and exhaust redo....tried to fire her back up today, but the starter took a crap and I ran out of time to keep working on her before work. Hopefully tomorrow I can get her fired up and driving again.

Sorry, no pictures but I did install new wipers after a 0500 rainstorm incident on the way to work. Luckily, my cool under pressure and superior driving skills saved me from certain doom.....ok, I really just pulled over until the rain shower ended but hey, it sounded good right? ;)

Got her all running and almost tuned in, then with only an hour and a half to go before I had to come to work, my buddy and I decided to go ahead with a swap out to my new HEI distributor. Unfortunately, the battery died and the power went out while we were trying to get her dialed in. So for now she sits, hopefully the power is back on in the morning so I can stop by the shop and plug in the charger on my way home to bed. Should be driving tomorrow night!

Teaser pic....and yes, once I am all done I am going to clean up the engine bay.

What is the story on the grille guard? Where is that from. Just curious.

Went to the quarter car wash today and hosed the winter crud off the firewall, then came home and gave the truck a bath getting ready for the Goodguys show tomorrow and Saturday. Normal temps for the show are mid-80’s to low 90’s. Saturday is suppose to be 100. I’m not a hot weather person, but at least we’ll have a shade canopy and some chairs with us.

Spent yesterday digging thru trucks in an unmarked graveyard. Scored a tach dash from a 1964 ( trying to figure out a way to get it in my 63), posi rear end out of a 72, factory power brake booster, tilt column from a 74 van ( less the shifter lever )and a much needed p/s hood hinge. I found a pair of bucket seats in a carry all that I left, I'm thinking I might go back for those. I also grabbed this tachograph do hicky ... not sure what it is but it looked cool, it has a tach and a clock in it.

I bought a great 66 custom parts truck earlier this year. The truck has lots of rust though. The floors are gone. The bumper and grill guard were the main reasons for the purchase. Take a look. I have seen a few like this. I believe it was something that could be purchased from the dealer back in the day.

Tachographs and speedographs were common devices installed in fleet vehicles back when I worked at Peterbilt in the 1970's. They basically were a "Big Brother" system to see when the truck was moving or sitting, and how fast the truck and the engine were running. It allowed the fleet operator to determine if the driver was doing what he said, driving 55 mph all day, or taking a break at his girlfriends house and then driving 90 miles an hour to make up for the lost time.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

It was way too hot today to do much work, and I lost power at the shop almost right after I got there. So all I did was pull my downpipe back off the truck so i can take it into the exhaust shop tomorrow morning and have it shortened a couple inches. All assembled it hung WAY too close to the ground for my taste, it should be good to go by tomorrow afternoon.

Drove it to Guelph (20 min drive) to deliver a piece of furniture to my brother (lovely morning to be cruising with the tunes blasting), then brother and I went off to Mississauga (45 min drive) to an alcohol store to get some supplies for next weekend, check out the bounty 52 Ales, and lagers from home and abroad (shame we can't get any US craft brews up here, love the brew pubs you guys have down there). Got home, and fixed my gas gauge, when it did work it was flopping all over the place, I thought it was the gas sloshing around. I originally thought it was a grounding issue, turned out to be the power wire was loose. Reads real good and steady now. Then I took her to the car wash, and powered washed a lot of guck and grime off of the front suspension. It will soon be time to tear down, and add 2.5" drop, and power disc brakes!

Tried to tow it to my new house and a rear tire blew. Truck bounced around on the trailer and crushed the rocker panel, side and rear of the bed. Door is a little bent but fixable. After a few hours in the desert sun getting back on the trailer and off at the new house, I am in no mood to get the tires fixed and really access the damage.

Even though I plan to get started on tearing into some fairly major work in about a months time, I decided to clean up the deluxe wheel I picked up recently, and put it on. Man it is big!!! Makes it quite a bit easier to maneuver in parking lots, and... I like it:metal:
