Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Well AD, I must apologize as I had not read through your build until tonight and I gotta say, you have done some really great metal work! I am loving the Burb, but I have a soft spot for them :D
I will be following you on this one! |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
How bout a "top" & 4 sides laying at a slight angle ... /----\
With some circle beads on the sides for looks & strength. |

Really appreciate the ideas and feedback guys. You all are helping me to raise my bar. |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
You are correct ... a chopped pyramid. IMO it'll set well, alone, in the middle of the rear versus the "tub" style ... but that's just my opinion ...

So I was trolling the 60 - 66 Suburban section and another member posted this 62 Suburban below. Turns out it is 40 miles from me and at an auction house. My AAADD (adult automotive attention deficit disorder) kicked in and I had to call. It went through the auction, didn't bring enough, owner went to Florida and is in poor health and asked auction house to sell it...asking $8,000 make an offer.
I couldn't resist and had to go check it out...might be a great deal. And actually it looked pretty good until I looked underneath Pretty rusty with some bad repair attempts....figured there was more of same down low under the nice paint. Darn rust belt....was hoping it had been imported in from a better climate. |

Guys,
Thanks for all the input for the differential cover. R46 I liked the chopped pyramid idea and spent some time determining material sizes and angles I would need. And I looked at trailer fenders ordering this one... Amazon.com: CE Smith Steel Trailer Fender:... 16 gauge with radiused edges. Cut the fender down to the right length and made some sides to close it to the floor then welded them in. |

Rather than direct weld it to the floor, I used 16 gauge bent 90 degrees to position the hump and provide some additional support front to rear.
A little more trimming then will plug weld it together. Think the radius and the hump follows the form of the wheel tubs. |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
AD - nicely done, however, give the pyramid idea a chance as I think it will address the area better. But that's just my opinion.
Try it in cardboard as a sample ... R46 |

AD; :mm:
you did a great job.looks like the top of the tubs on a smaller scale, Just the way I would have done it all so. Still able to put seats over it if need be. T-P Auto Tim :chevy: |

A little progress...welded in the differential hump then kinda stood back and enjoyed the look of the floor. Not bad looking and a lotta work to get there. It was nice to pick up some wrenches to finish stripping the dash. The flat floor was pretty comfortable for working under the dash too. The radio opening is hacked up and I am going to wait to fix that until I figure out what to do for a radio. Apparently I'm not into tunes as I've never put any sound system in any vehicle I've ever built. May not on this one either...dunno yet. Thanks for checking in on the build. |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
AD-
I can see why you are admiring that floor. You did a bang up job on it. Remind me did you use 16g or 18g for the rear floor? This is looking better all the time. Marc |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Thanks Marc!
I used 16 gauge. Believe most floors are built with 18 gauge though they use beading / ribbing for additional strength. This one might have been overkill and it feels pretty solid. There is one area of oil canning near the rear I will need to address. If there is any way I can help you with yours please let me know. |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Thanks for checking in on my build. Your burb brings back great memories of working on mine. Really diggin the work you are doing. Floors look great.

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
too bad all that hard work gets covered up! I hate when people hack up the radio spot. A. delete plates aren't cheap and b. if there is any damage in that area it is hard to fix been there done that. I hope you find a way to incorporate the delete plate if you go no radio (which I'm not a huge fan of them either) I have one in my 51' and its hidden, I never use it. Will be putting one in my current build but it will be hidden also. I just rock the delete plates, that area shaved is just too much blank space for me.
