Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....
IM BACK !!!!
My life has kinda taken a turn for the worst, so I have been trying to keep it together for the sake of my kids (first and foremost), my business, and of course the roof over my head. The Burban and every other project HAS to come in last in regards to what has to some first .... Anyway, here are some updates !!! When I left off, I was repairing the passenger side of the Rad support (Driver side I will get to soon) ... Next it was time to prep the front of the 94 Chassis to except the 62 Support, and front bumper .... The front of the chassis was measured, and cut back and a VERY basic crossmember out of 2x4 was created which will be modified as we go along.... - - http://i59.tinypic.com/2ns9z6s.jpg - - http://i58.tinypic.com/2r6l36e.jpg - - http://i60.tinypic.com/n75vk.jpg - - http://i60.tinypic.com/2vun5lk.jpg - - http://i62.tinypic.com/15a5ih.jpg |
Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....
Some scrap, left over 2x4 tubing was used to accomplish this front section.
The 45's were welded in for support, and fill. I needed 8" drop from the top of frame to get the stock frame horns to locate properly. The 45's will be modified/trimmed as necessary for clearance, them capped. - - - http://i60.tinypic.com/2lau4qa.jpg - - http://i57.tinypic.com/19l6qe.jpg - - - STOCK style front mounts were used .... - - - http://i57.tinypic.com/waoj2s.jpg - - http://i57.tinypic.com/2zjddfn.jpg - - http://i62.tinypic.com/m9uady.jpg - - - - Using the fenders and Rad support as a guide/locater, and of course my trusty measuring device (string) .... I centered up and locted the frame horns .... - - - - http://i59.tinypic.com/fe3wpe.jpg - - http://i61.tinypic.com/2624gw1.jpg - - http://i58.tinypic.com/15iyip.jpg - - http://i58.tinypic.com/10rk65g.jpg - - http://i58.tinypic.com/dp7hnn.jpg - - |

Re: '62 GMC BurbMaster "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....
I used the punched angle as shown to located the radiator support, while the inner/outer fenders are removed.
I am still on the fence as to what to do with inner fenderwells ... The overall tire size will obviously play an important part in the decision. I PLAN ON DRIVING THIS, IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS ... TOWING A TRAILER...NOT RIDING ON ONE !!! So water/dirt spray in engine compartment is a concern The only other suspension modification I plan on is to step notch the lower control arms, and possibly trim the frame pocket so the a-arm will lay flat up against the frame .... if that. |
Re: '62 GMC BurbMaster "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....
Hi Chief. You're doing some great fabrication on this suburban. I'll keep watching for ideas to steal.

Re: '62 GMC BurbMaster "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....
Next up was the RADIATOR.
I really wanted to just purchase a drop in radiator, but as this is somewhat a budget build, and I have the LT1 radiator, I might as well use it. This meant some clearance work is in order ... - - - http://i59.tinypic.com/fz2gqc.jpg - - - http://i61.tinypic.com/adncwn.jpg - - - http://i57.tinypic.com/30k7jic.jpg - - - http://i57.tinypic.com/mhwn5f.jpg - - - http://i62.tinypic.com/10qfbcz.jpg |

Wow, sorry to hear about life taking a turn for the worse..hope it improves quickly!
Great work on the Burb. Appreciate the updates. Looked at a 62 to buy...looked decent on top and prett rusty underneath. |

The Big D is no fun !! Most rust in manageable, just depends on what a person can manage ... |
Re: '62 GMC BurbMaster "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....
OK, so we are passed the fenderwells ...
Now the passenger frame horn need some clearance for the tank/lower outlet ... Plasma cutter action takes care of this, then once satisfied, I will plate/cap to make frame solid again .... - - - http://i62.tinypic.com/11bj3ma.jpg - - - http://i57.tinypic.com/1fzud3.jpg - - - http://i60.tinypic.com/ra3m15.jpg - - - http://i61.tinypic.com/2j4ojo0.jpg - - - http://i61.tinypic.com/2j4ojo0.jpg - - - http://i60.tinypic.com/2hcdtm0.jpg - - - http://i61.tinypic.com/2yvmntw.jpg - - - http://i62.tinypic.com/wsrcs0.jpg - - - Using the stock rubber isolaters, I used some flat stock to make the hangers ... - - - http://i61.tinypic.com/bhfxnm.jpg - - - |

Re: '62 GMC BurbMaster "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....
The top mount came next.
Originally , I was going to fab up two separate mounts for the top ... but I decided to go with a plate style, similar to newer GM's. Cut off the nipples (ouch, sorry ladies) ... and 1/2" stock locates the isolaters - - - - http://i57.tinypic.com/2vjo97d.jpg - - - http://i58.tinypic.com/50k6z4.jpg - - - http://i62.tinypic.com/fylkle.jpg - - - http://i60.tinypic.com/2vulk6f.jpg - - - http://i57.tinypic.com/24wa7af.jpg |
