So, slow starting this time, lot of other things on hands. I bolted the header on and looked what options I had to make a steering shaft. After some trial and error I came up with this. This is the best routing for the shaft. I set it up with some tools, so I could measure and see what I need. I also think I have to use only one support bearing, just above the middle u-joint. Please tell me if I need more!! The double gives me an offset of 1" according to Borgeson. That 1" should be just enough. Kees, Please teach me how to set front and rear ride height for your baby? Especially what could come out of the blue and take a huge bite out of my skinny arse. I've heard that the front irs should be moved forward in the wheel well to better hit center, 1" to 2" through your opinion in as well or what did you do? How does one set ride height, You are so very clever just hoping you will share. Many thanks in advance.

Nut Case, if I remember well, you want Corvette stuff, right?
It's not the same... But I did move the front IFS 3/4 of an inch forward. This measured with the front fender on, so you see whats happening. Don't know what to do with Corvette IFS. For rideheight I did go with the stock height for Jaguar, measured under the IFS. Then you have the lower A-arms where they supposed to be, at the right angle. Then I set this under the framerails and measured rideheight of the truck itself, at the front. Bolt on the wheels you're using! When that's all good, then you set the framerails level, front to back (or at the desired rake you want) and measure the IRS in. Also went with stock Jag measurements. That way you know how high the diff has to be, so the lower A-arms sit at the right angle. Jaguar measures the rideheight from the floor to the underside of the IFS, or at the back, to the diff. You want to know how Corvette measures its rideheight, and then do the same as I did: measure, measure, measure. When your done with your measuring, measure again!! Hope this helps a bit? And read back from page 7, there the fun begins ;) |

Kees: thanks for the information. Looking at your new posts, what a great idea to use 3/8 drive extensions to lay out the steering shaft. My dad taught me to measure twice and cut once, he also said, if you don't want your tools to drop on the floor and get damaged, put them on the floor in the first place. Todays update: Steering column....
As I have a early Chevy Van column, that's way too long I have to shorten it. At first I was a bit scared to cut this up, because they are hard to find overhere. There are plenty with ignition key in the column, but not these without it. So, after some measurements I took my buddy the Grinder and gave it a shot :metal: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C...2/IMG_2642.JPG Where the tape is, that's the amount that has to go.... First: Mark where you cut: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6...2/IMG_2644.JPG Think once, cut twice ;) Then cut through the lenght to get it out: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-r...2/IMG_2645.JPG As you need space to weld the parts together again, I took another 3" out of the outer pipe. This is for welding the shifter pipe together again. That 3" is going to be welded back in, after welding the shifter pipe. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g...2/IMG_2647.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-o...2/IMG_2649.JPG Now I have all the parts at the right length, just have to weld them together. I have marked all pipes to get them at the same position again. As you see in the last pic, the steering shaft only needs shortening, no welding needed there! The column needs to be secured at the floor, so I made this clamp out of a piece of an exhaust. I put it on the column before I weld everything. When I bolt the column in the truck, I make a floorpiece that's going to be welded on the clamp and bolted to the floor. Mine is also a shortened van column and I machined it for the Double-D joint. I also modified the shift arm so the shift rod would clear the brake pedal! |

Just a heads up. On GM for the shift indicator to match the transmission the distance from the center line of the column shaft to the linkage hole needs to be the same as the center line of the trans shift shaft to shift rod linkage hole. I spent some time on trial and error before I found a link with that nugget of information. So if you lengthened the one on the column you will need to do the same to the trans shaft lever.

I've ordered the parts for the steering so that have to wait a few weeks. Been thinking what to do with the towbar. I also want the fueltank in that spot. The towbar is from a '98 Trialblazer, and is just a little too wide. I modified the towbar so it fits the framerails. I now can bolt it right under. Ground off the original "ears" and made my own. Also welded in a gusset, that's being used as the rear mount of the fueltank. Small update... Due to some physical problems nothing much is done. You see what this is going to look like when finished I think. I have to use modern mathmatics to get the stock doorhandle work with the BMW doorlocks. I think I know what to make for this.... As I was at home, I took the ventwindow apart to put new weatherstriping in there.
