Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Started on the brake lines yesterday.
Rear http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps8944f628.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psc52afc89.jpg Front passenger side. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps90a383c8.jpg Need to buy some extended lines so that I can figure out where I want my front brake lines to hook up. Once this is done its tear down time. |

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Got my extended brake lines and also started making the mounts for the front and rear lines. Having trouble getting my flares to even look right so I cant finish up the brake lines just yet.
Brake lines http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psd3a51e5f.jpg Front brake line mount http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psbc3a89a1.jpg Rear brake line mount. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps423bec18.jpg Also started looking at ideas for my safety chains on the gooseneck hitch. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps11b311e2.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Got my gooseneck safty chain hooks up started. Just need to gusset them and finish welding.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psf85dec49.jpg Also started tearing the frame down again so that i can finish up some welding and then start prepping the frame for paint. Motor and tranny out http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps5615aa03.jpg Started finishing some welding and also started welding all the factory holes in the frame up. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps045f335e.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Looking good buddy! About time you got it in the correct section.

Well the past two days I have spent probably about 16 hours in the shop. Trying to get the frame painted soon so that I can make it a roller again because its getting warmer outside and if you have noticed there is a pontoon boat stuffed behind my truck and I am sure my uncle is going to want to get it out at some point. First I rolled the frame on the side so that welding all of the holes in the frame would be easier and to also finish some welding in hard to get parts that I was not comfortable welding upside down. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psf86a831f.jpg A whole bunch of holes I was welding up. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psc41f69e1.jpg Some of the holes were really big so I made a couple plugs to make welding them easier. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps3c48dc42.jpg After I got all the holes welded and ground down I flipped it over and did the same to the holes on the bottom and also finished some more welds. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psc9be1abc.jpg When I boxed the frame I had places in the frame that where not even with the top of the frame and there were some big holes left. (Pics are of opposite sides because i forgot to take before and after pics of both sides) http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psac0e778a.jpg And here it is with a plate welded in. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psadcb4aa3.jpg I then needed to build some braces for the poor man shackle flip that I did. Started out with a piece of steel c-clamped to the back of the bracket so that I could use the bracket to act as an outline for my cutting torch and grinder. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...pse3630184.jpg I then drilled the holes and created some gussets. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps823154c3.jpg All I have left to do on the bottom end is grind down some welds, cut the receiver tube for the goose neck hitch down some and then I should be able to flip the frame on its other side and weld on the holes on that side. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Nice!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Looking good man! Next time before you box your frame, patch the holes so it's easier to weld from the out side. Tired of welding yet?

I've got a funny feeling GM didn't know either!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Haha I'm starting to believe that too. But then again there were fuel line holders, wiring harness holders and brake line holders, exhaust hangers, fuel tanks, and parking brake brackets. Which all of those are gone now.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I got an iPhone 5 today and decided to try its panorama view today down at the shop. Kinda thought the pic was cool.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psdc4d49b1.jpg I got all of the holes welded up on the bottom and also cut the receiver hitch for the gooseneck down, and the safety chain mounts gusseted and also finished work on my engine cross member mounts. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psf07757e5.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psab573c18.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps86eb209c.jpg I also hate the lower mounts on the rear shocks that I have and after looking at some things I like the idea of outboarding the shocks. And I know this truck will not be articulating a lot and I saw a lot of shock mounts are just sticking straight out on most of the newer vehicles. So I started looking into this setup. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps6c148214.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps27a8f35e.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
you know, that shock location will work well with bags...
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Sweet, well let me get it running and then I'll drop it off at your house to let you bag it.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well Ive gotten some stuff done on the truck. Was looking at the out boarded rear shocks and just was not finding a good way to make the upper mount that didnt look like some big bracket welded to the frame. So I went back to the original way that I had the shocks.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psc5ab73e7.jpg I then decided it was finally time to seal up the rear of the frame. I did not run the rear cross member all the way inside of the frame because I had nuts welded inside the frame for the bumper and the receiver hitch and so I used the end plates as ways to tie the frame to the cross member more. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psa0b952ad.jpg Got my safety chain hook ups all welded up shock mounts welded, and also gusseted my gas tank strap mounts. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psd653d113.jpg Brought the D60 back into the shop so I can tear it down. Going to try to get the axles and frame all painted at one time so I can have it as a roller ASAP. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psb7507a4a.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psc4f7414a.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...pseefb206d.jpg |

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Thanks fellas!
Been getting the frame and axles ready for paint. And today I was able to lay down some paint. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps992715ee.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psf2a65f06.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps7b23cace.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps7f25cdca.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps28302f13.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps4780c9eb.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
nice! what did you use for paint?
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
It's the tractor paint that you can buy from tractor supply. It's cheap but I put it on my k10 3 years ago and it's done fine. This was a different brand then the stuff I have on my k10 tho so hopefully it is just as good.

Started cleaning the knuckles out as well so that I can get some paint on them. Just need to get the kingpin rebuild kits and I should be able to have it back as a roller. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psf6da0fca.jpg |

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I went up to Dieselwrenchers for a week and spent time helping him get his long horn running for Goodguys and I brought home some more parts.
2nd Gen intercooler and a shifter for the transmission and a couple other things. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps63da96b7.jpg Got to looking at how to install the intercooler in the core support and putting it in the front was looking like it was going to take a lot of work. It is very close to the lights and the grill does not have a lot of room between it and the core support. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps694b0072.jpg So I decided to flip it over and see if it would fit any better. Looks like I will just have to cut the main supports out of the core support and it should fit in very nicely. I will have to build some new supports but that should be easy. I am looking around for a radiator for the truck now so I can make sure that after I cut it it will all fit like factory. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps9d58c47a.jpg I also got in a intake flange from Ryanroo so I can make a custom intake for the truck. Thanks Ryan! http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psa2e4bb0b.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps49e50f00.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Nice plan on the intercooler. Thanks for the help, I hope you had a good time. PS You may want to check your gun case............... I hope the black rocks will suffice.............

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
No problem man it was fun. Oh don't worry I checked it before I left to make sure they were still there.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I ended up buying the radiator back that came out of this truck when it had a 454.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps04eceb9f.jpg I set the radiator in the stock place and it looked like there was a ton of clearance for the intercooler so i started cutting on the core support. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psbaf0c634.jpg Intercooler will fit down in there nicely after i drill two holes for the bottom mounts. Then I will have to build some upper mounts and put in some new vertical supports. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps4d4af3b2.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well tonight I got some time in the shop and have the intercooler finally setting in the core support just how I want it. I still need to make the top mounts which should be pretty easy. One thing I was trying to do while I was mounting this intercooler was to not modify anything on the intercooler so that if something happened to this one I would be able to buy a replacement and it would fit right in.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps8957d4fd.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps92d81663.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psbe3476ab.jpg The only thing I had to do was move the upper mount rubber isolators in farther so that they would clear the back of the headlights and allow for a bolt to be able to pass through them. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
sure fits in there nice!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I have enough clearance on mine so I won't have to trim it down at all. How did you go about making the top mounts? I think I'm just going to make a u shaped bracket that gets bolted to the core support and the the intercooler bolts to that.
Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
You have that IC sitting in there nice. Almost as if it was made to go there. As far as clearance goes for the rad support to the frame, what about welding a nut plate on the support and running a bolt up from the bottom. Almost the same idea as the original cab mounts? I was thinking this would work as long as the bolt size was cut down only to protrude 1~2 threads max. Might be easier than getting a wrench in there?
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Oh, and the upper mounts you could try some angle iron then drill/tap out to bolt it to the IC. Then when you have it lined up weld the angle to the rad support, using the IC to hold it in the right spot. Not sure if this is th best way, but that was how I was planning on doing it.
Looks great keep up the good work. |
