Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
well, if you had a coolant leak from the intake odds are you have a vacuum leak which would def affect your idle circuit amongst other things, make sure you don't have coolant in your oil and check your plugs, could def be a the source of running rough.
As for the EZ wiring, trying to remember off hand here, but yes, def a grey wire in the cab and one out of the cab, the one in the cab. I see what you are saying about tying them together, I think that is what i had to do, tie em together since your not running manual switch, seems to makes sense, its just been a while. I can look tomorrow if I can remember. I hated EZ's instructions, their tech guy is great but its hard to get him on the phone. I really wanted to make my own diagram and post it in a PDF to make peoples lives EZier!!! |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
99,
I connected the two gray wires under the dash and now I have power to the fan relay under the hood. Problem solved. Things are getting crazy at work with hail and storm damage so I may need to take a week off from the truck. Hopefully next week I'll be able to wrap up the few little problems and get this thing on the road!!! Thanks for your help on all of this!! |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
glad you got that going, yeah I looked under my dash and thats how I have it rigged too, you'd think they would just say that in the instructions in the first place, but they don't.
can't wait to see yah get this on the road. |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
Looking great Atommik. Those last minute Gremlins can be a real pain. We were still messing with fuel pump issues all the way through power tour (this is the 3rd electric fuel pump we've put on the truck).

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
ahhhhhh you guys are giving me horror stories on these fuel pumps. I may never go Epump now. But good thing I don't mind the old cheap mechanical ones.

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
After having some poor running/ rough idle, poor starting "issues", I decided to try a different carb. A guy from work had a Holley 750 cfm double pumper that he was not using. That's more carb than I really need, but hey, you only live once!! Bolted it on and it made a huge difference!! Now it runs smooth and strong!!
The old Edelbrock just was too old and full of gunk even after a rebuild. I just need to fix the tranny cooler line leak(this weekend), install the windshield (tomorrow) and it should be dependable and legally drivable!! Can't wait!!! |

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
yeah congrats, If I were you I'd just buy a new 600 eddy or 650 holley or quickfuel carb, that double pumper is a bit much will work but is gonna suck gas and have you running too rich. Glad everything is coming together for you.

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
Well good news, bad news.
Got the trans leak fixed, just a loose fitting on the cooler line,. Bad news truck wouldn't stay running long enough to really test the leak or the cooling fan operation. Fuel delivery problems. Just not getting enough gas. I guess I' have to open up the tank and give it a good cleaning and then double check the flow from the fuel pump. Of course I thought this problem was solved a couple of days ago, so I added 5 gallons of gas to the tank that I will now need to drain. At least I didn't fill the tank! |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
You'll get it sorted out bud. I have faith in ya!

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
Good news, I removed the fuel pump/sending unit and found that the tank was really clean inside, but the section of fuel line between the pickup tube and the fuel pump was shot causing the external fuel pump to suck air. I removed the S10 pump I wasn't using and extended the pickup tube, and reinstalled it. Now I have fuel pumping.
Leaks are pretty much gone, so I took it for my first official drive !! I forgot to connect the vacuum line to the trans so it would not shift out of 1st, but I made it around the block with no other trouble!! Very excited to reach this milestone!! Pics to follow. |

hmmm, purdy. :)
I wish my tranny problems were just a vacuum line :) |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
Congratulations on getting it on the street even if it was just around the block. It sure has been nice build to follow and read since the first post pictures of it in the field with no tires and a bed full of junk. Again, congratulations. Now to tie up all the loose ends. Thanks Atommik.

Stainless, from LMC Truck.
Still need to use the buffer and do the final polish, then I'll start installing the rest of the trim. |

Finished the exhaust this morning. After getting another look at it on the ground, I think I will shorten the length of the tail pipe. It sticks out too far.
Also got the vacuum line 95% done for the tranny. Just need to make the final connection at the vacuum port on the carb. Should be able to finish that before work on Monday. Well, with all of the "big" items complete, time to make a new list of "little" things to do! It's going to be a long list... |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
glad to see its finally all coming together an is a driver. One thing I'd suggest is having easy access to your battery. Nothing worse than trying to fix problems and to add to that the battery goes dead. For example I had a module go bad in my dist. I just ordered up a whole new distributor, from trying to start it before I realized the problem, then after I got new dist in I didn't have enough juice to get it going, so I had to swap out the battery just to finish up getting it going and retimed. Things like that will pop up, especially with a carb set up. Other than that I think your going to be fine.

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
99,
I am planning to have some hinged bed wood panels for access to the battery. I'll be building my own bed floor so it shouldn't be a problem incorporating the hinges into my design. |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
you can thank the ethanol mix in our gas for this
took me 3 times to get the right line for my pump i'm very good and fast at dropping my tank :D http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1373577184 |

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
Thanks Shannon.
Well after a 20 minute test drive during my lunch break with no surprises, I decided the time was right to drive it home!! Since my work is only 6-7 miles from home I knew it would be a shorter drive than at lunch time. So I went home and then had my daughter drive me back to work after supper, then I drove the truck home, no problems at all!! It's nice to finally have it home so I can work on it when ever I want. If I need to do something I can't do at home, I'll drive it to work. Should work out well!! Had a couple of neighbors stop by that hadn't seen my truck since it was is pieces in the garage. |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
That's awesome! I bet it felt good to swing it into the driveway!

awesome man, that is really cool your on the road. In a couple years you'll look back and be like wow where'd I find the time to build that and it will sink in that much more how much work goes into these and the joy of having them is def a blessing of some sort.
|
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
Yeah, the fuel line was the original out of the S10 tank. It connects the fuel pick up tube and the pump. It's only about 2 inches long. Most likely used to help with vibration control.
