Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Well, Mate Martin got back from two weeks in Florida today.
Along with a liter of Baccardi Rum I had ordered from him, he brought in about £170's worth of bits for my truck that I had ordered. Thanks to Amanda for carrying my stuff in her baggage. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8d4afbe6.jpg He also brought me some "Man Porn" http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8ded8982.jpg And a plate for my collection. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8d344a7c.jpg MOST IMPORTANTLY....... Some rare parts to fix my trucks dash. The radio has been mounted in a hole made by an angry Badger. And I have some gauges fitted into the heater control plate, they will be relocated and the dash cleaned up. Thank you to Martin and Ta2Don for searching a yard for me and finding these parts. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps9c1ebfbe.jpg Little by little the parts are coming together for the truck. Next big one will be all the side trim pieces when I can afford them. |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Just a quick reply to some comments I got on various forums.
The guy who owns the yard buys up, restores and sells the stuff you see. He apparently collects whatever he can finf accross Turkey and seeing three 60-66 Chevy C10's and a GMC of the same vintage was a huge kick for me as I have a 66 too. I did try to buy one number plate off the pink one for my collection but it was a distinct NO. I had also hoped to find a couple of dash blanking plates inside them but no luck. Fortunately A friend found both I needed in a yard in Florida USA two weeks later. Seems he is quite pricey according to our tour guide but remember that is vs Turkish incone. There is a large ex-military airport about 30 minutes away at Dalaman that is now civilian. So it may have some bearing on the content of the yard. As is always the case, language and culture are the main barriers but I suspect everything is for sale. |

Thanks Don Clem's seems to have been the place to be. Definitely one on my "To do" list (not sure when though, and don't mention it to Martin) 06.40 here, and buddy Ian and I are just getting ready to be off to Martin's to help him with the last push to get the rear end off his chassis and get it all stashed so that he an get his cab under cover for winter, then we all come back here for a BBQ that Ian will be doing while Martin and I get on with fitting the new lowered springs and shocks to my truck. Looking forward to that........ Let's hope it all happens without too much drama and blood. :uhmk::waah: |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Pics later when I have uploaded them.
Started my day by going to mate Martin's home with friend Ian, to help him dismantle the rear suspension, axle etc from his chassis and then to pack everything into his garage, followed by getting the cab back into his carport so he can start his bodywork.. Once done there at about lunchtime, we came over to my place to fit my new 2 inch lowered front and rear springs and shocks. ............. NOT MUCH FUN. Took a lot of banging and bashing to get the drivers side lower ballpoint to separate out. Upper went quicker. Now for the ball ache..... Before the new spring and shock was fitted on the drivers side, the height from top of wheel arch to floor was 29 inches. AFTER FITTING THE 2" DROPPED SPRING AND SHOCK THE SAME MEASUREMENT WENT UP TO 31.5" SO A GAIN OF 2.5" WTF?!?!?!?!?! No idea what happened there. Any ideas?? |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Some more observations....
New spring is just over an inch shorter than old. New spring material about 2mm thicker than old. New spring has one whole loop more than old I do believe the new spring is located in the pocket at the bottom, as I looked at it specifically. Rocked and rolled the cab/body after fitting it. And I do believe, after speaking to Brothers in the USA this afternoon that the parts I have are correct. The prospect of cutting out a single coil from the new springs is becoming very tempting. What is the experience out there with cut coils?? |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Grizz,
From past experience 1 col is equal to about 2"... Get your grinder out!!! P. :D |

Hey Paul, Thank you for the reply. I think the way forward, depending on the weather today, will be to refit the driver side, in case it did not seat correctly. And then passenger side. Then to leave it all to settle a it and do a drive up to the farm as well. We found my front brake hoses to be rotten/US yesterday, so they need replacing first. At the price of springs etc here, I will rather refit than cut, the disassembly is. Cheaper than replacing. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Fixed without chops...... Springs were not seated right.
Now both fitted, seated right and only 10mm taller than before. I suspect originals were cut by at least a coil to give 2" drop, but sagged in the end..... Happy to leave it to settle now. Next job will be fresh brake pipes up front. Pics and update later when I have finished my chores ;) |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
I have decided to do a dual update, running over two days this weekend.
Started by going over to mate Martins place at 07.00 on Saturday with another mate, Ian in tow to help him with the final stripdown of his chassis and then to get it into the garage and then to move other bits about, including the cab into the carport so that he can start the welding marathon he has ahead of him. I will let the pics do most of the taking....... Needless to say, there is a lot of rust and we managed to strip off a few bolt heads. Fortunately Martin has purchased many new parts for his build. This is the lever bar we used on quite a lot of the bolts n nuts. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4ab5bf86.jpg Because I was there to take photos of the progress, I ended up working for a change. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pseade8bf7.jpg it was not a sunny day...... http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps461cb182.jpg Pooping my pants or farting ? http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps981f369b.jpg Unfortunately we did not have any smaller tools. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pse20d7646.jpg U Bolts cut as there are new parts in store. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps72bd9ba4.jpg Getting the rear spring off nearly gave Martin a hernia. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfce64ea6.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psa54f8395.jpg Between fetching cups of tea and biccies, we did allow Ian to pack the tools away. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps196c3606.jpg DONE !!!!! http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4d2ed1e4.jpg Next up we moved the cab in under the carport and then all pilled into cars and went back to my place. ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ ££££££££££££££££££££ So back at my place I pulled the truck out and got all the bits ready. But not before I had pre-cooked 20 Peri Peri chicken wings and got some sausage ready for Ian to do us a BBQ later. He was also on kettle duties..... Just starting to take the front wheel off. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psdbd17bef.jpg Old vs New shocks. New shocks were ordered at -2" http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psab778294.jpg Martin and I getting our heads together. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps14001aca.jpg And then it got spicy...... Martin was all over me like a cheap suit. There was a lot of huffing and puffing to get old nuts and bolts loosened. Thank goodness these trucks are built in Man Size. In the mean time Ian kept us tanked up with tea and coffee as well as passing, collecting spanners and taking some photos. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps14001aca.jpg At some point, after much bashing, we got the spring removed. It seems the original spring was cut down by 2 inches and refitted, and over time it, along with the shock absorber had become very saggy. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps35c7fb38.jpg Once done with the drivers side we reassembled and put it back on the floor......... Using my special measuring stick expectantly, to see where the 2 inch lower than standard shocks n spring had taken us, I was shattered to find the front stood 2.5" higher than before. AAAAARRRRGGGHH !!! At this point it was getting to be dark, and Ian had cooked us all the spicy wings, which we ate directly off the fire/grid along with the sausage in hotdog rolls so we pushed the truck back into the garage till this morning, when Martin was back at my place by 07.45 (It is truly great to work with someone who gets up at a sensible time) My appologies to Martin's Amanda and my Nicola for having tosit around while we got down and dirty. After Martin left I posted up threads on the Chevy C10 board and Garage Journal and Rods n Sods looking for advice. Much was offered. So when we pulled the truck out this morning and jacked it up, I crawled underneath to inspect yesterdays fittings. YUP..... The spring had not been located so after some grunting and adjusting, we dropped it down again and found the new height was 10mm taller than the old parts. PERFECT !!! http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps58048282.jpg On to the passenger side, which took a lot less time to do. By 11.00 Martin had left to go shopping, and I shut shop to get out and spend some time with Nicola who was waiting patiently for us to finish. Next job will be getting the rear suspension sorted, possibly also replacing the lowering blocks. A couple of other observations on this job included non matching nuts and bolts keeping the suspension together, some very worn fittings and also front brake lines that need replacing sooner than later. Shock absorber top mount bolt. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pse2e9f7f5.jpg And lastly, the parts that came out. Original springs cut down by a coil, giving 2" lowering. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psf8799ff6.jpg That's all folks. |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
I have been losing sleep the last few days about getting the the rear springs and shocks off the truck and the new ones fitted after our battle with Martins last weekend.
This week I used SAS20 penetrating fluid three times to get the nuts and bolts all oiled up. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psdfecdfcf.jpg Today I contacted Darren from Unit Engineering to offer him a 4 post, 3000kg lift for £200.00 but interestingly he had also bought one last week. One thing led to another in our text chat and I mentioned tonight's projected job and anticipated pain....... "I have a battery powered Rattle Gun you can use." he offered, so after work I went down to his industrial unit (large engineering shop) had a coffee, chat and guided tour of some of his toys. Then asked if I could buy some solid ally from him to remake my lowering blocks....... come with me he said and back into the engineering shop we went....... "Here, have these" http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0f6b3463.jpg So with Rattle gun in hand I came home. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps76b3d99c.jpg After Martin and Ian got in we had a coffee, then I started the fire and handed over to Ian while Martin and I went to the garage. Back end went up and Rattle gun came out........ EFFORTLESS !!! http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps425109ee.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps423656a9.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps75efaae1.jpg OLD vs NEW http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps27a3ada9.jpg Springs and shocks removed http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pscd14cf7c.jpg The shocks come with a variety of steel sleeves, and I needed to cut two down to make them fit. Then grind down the sides of the bushes a bit for a tight fit. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps60217084.jpg New parts fitted and locked down. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps016e8079.jpg OOOOOHHHHH YESSSS !!!! 1.5" drop........ now that had my face hurting from all the grinning. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psefb52d1a.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps042dfc7a.jpg Not bad for 90 minutes worth of effort. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3361dc9c.jpg Checked the level with a spirit level and the load bed is flat straight. Now I want 2.5" dropped spindles on the front to go with the drums......... Can you get dropped spindles to go on drums?? http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4ab953ab.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc2283b8e.jpg Next up, tomorrow morning we need to drive back to Martins place 15 miles from here to fetch the new front brake hoses from his truck as he is going Disc brakes next, and to get some fresh brake fluid, then redo the trucks front shock lower bolts as I bought new high tensile bolts this week, as the originals were badly rusted and one was too short. Last thing will be a decent road test, and some daylight photos of the truck to show the current stance. |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Another one of those questions that have me wondering about stuff.
I have a standard front end with 6 lug and drums, after redoing the suspension with 2" drop all the way around, I am now thinking that I may want the front end a bit lower still. So can I do it while keeping everything else in place without sacrificing ride quality and use ability? What is available, from who and at what sort of money? |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Hey Grizz'
The 'free' option would be to section the crossmember , a relatively easy task for your skill sets! Think that would get you 1 1/2" and retain the full suspension travel. Having looked at the various threads detailing how it is done doesn't look hard technically. If i were to do it I think I would find a latter model truck being broken and take the front end out of that just in case I ever wanted to go back. Added advantage is it would come with 6 lug disk brakes so you could keep your wheels, which I am guessing is part of the reason for keeping the drums? Sure somebody else will come up with a drop spindle part number for drums which is the other option. Looking forward to today's update to see pictures out in the daylight! P. :D |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Here is a thread I bookmarked detailing one of the ways it can be done
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=543729 As for the insomnia I recommend taking up smoking meat, if you are going to be up you might as well spend it ensuring the correct temperature is maintained to produce the perfect pork shoulder or briskett! Look up the BBQ bretherin and make yourself a UDS! Hijack over, back to our scheduled program.... P. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
Well, went to sleep at about 00.45 and woke at 05.10 so not a good night, but woke with a big grin after yesterdays progress.
Martin had slept over on the couch and had similarly little sleep, but I suspect he missed Bow his giant Rottweiler being on top of him in bed...... So by 06.00 we were sitting planning our day. Return Darren's Rattle Gun and visit him for a bit, then to Halfords Motor spares to get a new battery for Nicola's MX5 as it was beginning to fail. Sorry to say, but the guys there, 3 of them behind the counter, are dicks. Asked the car's registration number, punched it into the computer.... "Ahhhh, it's an import, sorry, you will have to wait at least 10 minutes so that someone can go out to the car to look and see what battery it takes" Martin and I both laughed and walked out...... idiots. No wonder these sorts of businesses are dying out. From there we went to his house, found Amanda had woken from her slumber, and got the hubs from his truck to rob his brake lines from. Then came home via a spares shop where we got a litre of fresh brake fluid. At least the owner of the shop knew what we wanted and did not need to consult a computer or a winsdscreen wiper fitter. Coffee, cookies and chat with Ian who had a late wake up start and had thought we had been abducted by aliens as both our cars were still here and the garage locked and alarmed (as we had used Nicola's MX5 to run the errands) http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps741feac9.jpg Removed the pipes and remains of Martins truck's brake lines that he had cut off when stripping his truck. While we had the wheels off, I replaced the nuts and bolts fitted last week with new high tensile nuts and bolts. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps76c22d4e.jpg The brake pipes that came off looked like this........ http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps1f21cfce.jpg Replaced they looked like this. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc8840029.jpg After bleeding out the muddy coloured brake fluid, we driveway tested the brakes, as I did not want to clear the cars from the drive to go test the truck, but next weekend it will get a decent road test and drive, after which the brakes will be re-bled if needed. Lastly, a pic of the Motley Crew. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps42a75d3e.jpg Once again I can say a huge thank you to Martin for the extra hands and brain power, as well as to Ian for coffee, brake fluid topping up duties and general piss-taking and teasing. Next up will be getting the new exhaust system built and the cutouts ordered from the USA if I can get a courier organised. Looking forward to that antisocial part of the trucks evolution. |

Nicola just got back from visiting her daughter about 90 minutes from here, and I was saying that this truck really does make my heart smile. Despite the cost of everything we do here being around 60% more than the USA, so a $100 item in the USA will be $160 plus here, this truck and the people involved in the hobby/madness really makes me happy. There is so much more I would love to do, but one needs to be sensible and just wait till you can afford it, or an item comes into the market at the right price, which is rare over here, as there are not a lot of 60-66 C10's and pretty much no support from businesses. Check out my garage thread on GJ if you have time and are bored. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=52970 And I know your build of your truck is a memorial to your mum and dad....... Thanks to Don and Clemdaddy from Fayetteville, Arkansas a T-Shirt that blew my mind the first time I saw it as it had a C10 on it, as well as the Sinclair Oil Corporation, and a custom made number plate for car shows that Don had designed and got airbrushed for me. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psdbc3f772.jpg Well, that was my day. Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside BILLYBOB
RADICAL TRANSFORMATION !!
That is the only way I can describe how the new lowered shocks and springs on the trucks suspension performs compared to the waddling duck it had been before. After fitting everything new, including the brake hoses, I never got a chance to go test drive the truck, but of course the compressor had to be taken over to Martin's place 15 miles away today, after which I came home and then Nicola and I took a very large wooden chest down to her work and drove around some more before coming home, so I did around 50 plus miles today. After dropping the compressor off, I came back home driving rather briskly...... through every roundabout and other bendy bits, the truck felt a whole lot like a modern car, sure footed and going where I pointed it. I am amazed at the transformation. This is a modification I would highly recommend to anyone with one of these trucks. Of course there is a lot more radical stuff you can do to the truck including C-Notching, airbags, dropped spindles etc. The sky is the limit, or the size of your bank balance. I think that with imported parts, it came to about £100.00 or $160.00 per corner to fit these Brothers Trucks parts. After all the driving and hooning, the suspension must have settled for now, so here are a pair of pics, unfortunately, I had not straightened the steering wheel up front for the photos. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps80c90085.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps735bb261.jpg After we came back from the shops, Martin came over and we went to go look at a 1990 Chevy Dayvan. I was interested in the steering column, as I want a replacement column shift steering for my truck, and Martin is looking for a decent 350/350 or 700R4 combo for his truck. He will be selling the 307 and gearbox he bought running out of a truck earlier this year. The rest of the Dayvan would be sold off as spares if we bought it for the asking price of £800.00 When we got there and looked it all over, the steering was locked and the ignition mullered, Martin also decided for once to be sensible and walk away as the peripheral costs of making this engine run, could end up being more than than he wanted to spend. HOWEVER, we ended up spending a great afternoon with Wayne the seller and some of his mates at his industrial unit. I did have to use the bathroom, and the whole bathroom was done just perfectly, and I could not resist taking this pic of the toilet seat cover....... Just perfect for an Avatar. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psd154b70d.jpg We eventually left there and came home via Screwfix. |
