I think I'll need to take passenger seat out and have my wife drive me around while I crouch on the floor to locate the source of the noise.

It's a 4L60 (700R4) out of a 1993 Caprice at Pick-N-Pull. I rebuilt it with the help of an instructional video I purchased from Monster Transmissions. Used a TCI kit. Replaced some of the larger hard parts that are known to be problematic with heavy-duty versions.

I tried various combinations of vacuum switches and time-delay relays, but ended up building an Arduino-based electronic controller for it based on speed and manifold vacuum level.
