Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Finally killed the squeaky clutch pedal. I have squirted here and there and could never get the high pitch squeal to go away. Finally dug under the dash and realized I had bee bitten again by the PO-itis. I disconnected the clutch push rod to lube the pivot bolt. I pulled the rod out and the last 2 inches had a 20 degree bend in it so when you pushed in the pedal the bent angle part of the rod was rubbing really hard against the cup of the master cylinder so it screached going in and out. Straightened the rod, re-installed, presto magico no more screaching!!!! Maybe my wife won't be afraid to ride in the truck with me now.

Got the seats all reinstalled. Replaced the bolts on the inside door panel, and put the front bumper back on after having it re-chromed! Sent the front grille to get sandblasted and then painted a matte-black, it was just more affordable than having it de/re-chromed.

Got my panels back from the powder coater. Rebuilt the regulators, put sound deadoner in the doors, adjusted the plate so the doors close smooth, new arm rests, new felts and rubber. I wish I would have picked up some new screws and handles. Back to classic parts.

Got the stainless trimmed windshield back in place after what seems like a month of prep. Thankfully it was very uneventful.

Parked it. Once I can get a couple other projects out of the way she's going in the shop, I'm through with that inline 6. Sure it is a cool old engine, but the cool factor doesn't make up for the poor drivability and even worse fuel economy. Soon to be for sale: Chevy 292 with new HEI distributor, rebuilt carb, and SM420 4-speed transmission......:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::cuss:

Finished putting all the parts back on the truck, returning it to service. I always miss driving it when it’s torn apart, so I try to keep it those periods as short as possible.

I’m also looking for input on whether adding the chrome locking strip around the rear window would be an improvement, and does anyone know how long they hold up or if there are any problems with the chrome version?

My chrome strip has been in for several months and I like the look of it. Problem is I haven't seen any others to know how they hold up.

Ordered a power steering box, pump and pump brackets from Marshall Auto Wreckers in Alberta, $90.00 seemed like a killer deal to me. Probably cost another 20-30 to ship it:smoke:

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Cleaned around it, because I get the first new set of tires, since the build began 3yrs ago, in the morning.
I am excited to get some real rubber on her ("Sally"), my wife named her Sally. She said any thing you spend so much time on must have a name, and it must be a girl to keep my full attention as she has.
Anyway I am going to put new lugs on her in the morning so her new shoes will stay put.
I also removed the tape that was holding the door seals in place while the glue dried.

I took the grinder to the front grille, put the GMC letters on, put the headlights together, put the grille on the truck, took off the mirrors and cleaned them and repainted them... not a bad day!

Converted from worn, jamming coloumn shift to a Mr Gasket floor shifter. Went pretty well and took about 3 hours.

Anyone want the old column shift linkage? free for the cost of shipping.

I am not inrterested in the linkage, but I am wanting to find out how to remove it. I am rebuilding a column, and struggling with the last bit of tear down. The tab between the two linkage arms, is it press fit? welded?

Can't help you, sorry' I just unbolted the linkages where they attach to the arms on the column and left the arms in place.

Well done on the dome light!

That's my plan as well.

BTW, did you tap the holes in the door posts?

I didn't tap the holes. The pins come with a small nut. I drilled a hole slightly larger than the pin threads and then used a washer and tightened it down with the nut.

Just scored both uncut non-rusted inner fender wells and both door glasses for the 66 for $80 from a guy I found on Craigslist. Super nice guy with a really clean 65 that he almost has complete. Turned him onto the forum hopefully he will join.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Here is a good one for you.
A few weeks ago (ok about 4) I had my truck hooked up to start it. It wouldn't start and I had no spark to the plugs. A friend of mine came down today with his volt meter and we started with the switch and had 12 volts there. Then out to the coil (HEI ignition) and no volts there. I pushed the plug back on the switch and 12 volts popped up. I tried cranking but no spark, the 12 volts went away. My new wiring harness has a fuse for the coil and it blew. Why did it blow.. Who knows..
Took the cap off to make sure the rotor was in there and even turning and it was. Want to make sure the dodad was in the middle of the cap touching the rotor and it was. Finally I pulled the coil to see if make I broke a wire. I never took the coil out of the dist (which is a brand new Mallory) and as soon as I lifted it up we saw that the coil was in upside down. Who ever put the coil in at the factory put it in upside down. I flipped it over sprayed the carb with starting fluid and my truck made that BBC sound through open headers. What a smile I had on my face and then after that I had another friend come down adn help me put the hood back on. :metal:
