Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Chris, it's a chevy, big hub, dana 44. The plastic Spicer hub selectors were cracked when I got it and I tried to repair then by epoxying in steel sleeves. Apparently one failed so I just pulled them off and bolted a pair of hub flanges on. So the front hubs are always locked in, and I haven't noticed any difference in fuel mileage.
I did recently buy some ridiculously priced replacement blue Spicer lockouts. I need to disassemble, lubricate and install them. |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
They look slick Jason. I have no idea what mine are out of. I thought they were Chevy, maybe Mopar. Just got a set of the Warn premiums. We will see how they work. Yours look killar

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Looking good Jason! It's tough to paint big areas with a R/can. hell it tough with a spray gun. be careful if color sanding, you might rub through. For some reason i like the color lol! really only a little different shade than mine.
Do you know the difference in caster on an C/K axle and a newer O/k axle? or just the specs. My steering is still loose feeling after i reduced pump pressure even though it's better. maybe need some more caster in the ft axle. Read some good and bad things of wedges. anyway your tk is looking good. Kimble |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I need to be watching this one for sure.

I set my caster to 6* (I think) using steel shims. I think they were 4* shims. I used a pair of shims on each spring, one below and one on top to make sure that the u-bolt plate stayed square to the spring pad on the axle. It might have been only 4* of caster, I can't remember exactly but I'm sure I have it written down somewhere. What do you mean by "loose" steering? I put a newer model PS pump on my mom's 64 and man that steering is SUPER TOUCHY, but still driveable. Anyway that is a 2wd so not exactly a good comparison. Are you thinking the "looseness" is because you don't have enough caster?? |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Jason--It just has little feel to it, easy to turn even while stopped. when i put in the 3.31's i will get some 4* shims.

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
put my angle finder on the bottom of the knuckle bearing pin thing with the 4 bolts (don't get old lol) anyway it shows 3*
|
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Looks like you might be good with only a 2* shim. You don't want to get your pinion pointed down any further than you have to.

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Put some big black lug nuts on today.

Big Ugly is lookin good, I believe that the color of your bed is the original color of the bed that's on my truck, at the front panel that's against the cab is peeling and looks like that same color blue.... your truck looks like a Beast and that's a good thing.....Your fenders and door looks good...where you painted them.....Of course I like the sea-horse too, I miss my 70 Burb 4x4... Here's a picture of it now when I had it it was 1/2 ton....
http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...pswmweg8fw.jpg http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...psa2ghgy74.jpg I'd say it's a beast now... It was factory 250 six 3spd 4x4 less than 1,000 were made with this combo, I wished I could have kept that one....Plain Jane version no power nothing... I added power-steering and upgraded to HEI... had 33's with 4" lift... |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Don't want to be the guy getting off topic but that Burb is pretty sick Randy! Wonder if I could con the wife out of her Denali to get something like that!

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Agreed, that is a sweet suburban! I love that 70 grill!
I know how you feel about the one that got away...I wish I never sold my 72 blazer. What a fool I was! |
Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
Jason I also had a 72 Blazer with 33s and 4" lift. Right before I sold it I had just put 35s on it pro~comp all terrain... Talk about how much bigger a 35 compared to 33s wow...I think we've all had ones we wished we had back...

Re: 66 4x4 my sons new project
I guess this makes us a former owner of a 72 Blazer support group? That is kinda weird.
