Looking good.
Being able to drive it is great. Hope you get the doors figured out. Kim |
Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window
Dan, I can give you a hand if you like with the doors. I had a similar problem earlier with my 55 burban. Heck I might even have a couple extra hinges and doors laying around

3.25.13: (She's now a weekend "20 footer")
http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps36443e95.jpg A Closer View http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps45656325.jpg ...and because I am (apparently) the King of Mickey Mouse painting: http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...psecd8be95.jpg I sprayed the chains in the phony chrome paint. Yeah, I know it looks phony. I'll pick up polished stainless ones eventually. |
Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window
Very cool Dan, I think it really looks outstanding, and you don't have to worry about thousand dollar paint job getting hit by a door at the grocery market.:metal:
|
Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window
Ha ha, yup I definitely will not be worrying about THIS "paint job"
I'm almost embarassed to post about it since most of you guys are doing frame-off jobs. I'd LOVE to do that too but I just don't have the space to have an unmovable derelict in the driveway. And honestly? I wanna drive the thing! I'll keep improving her in little AND larger ($$) ways until it's "done" to suit me mechanically. Then when I retire, I'll blow it all apart for REAL paint. |

looks really good !

Dan head down to your local bicycle shop and ask for an old Mt. Bike tube.
Cut a couple of pieces and slip them over the chains then take a paper punch and make a drain hole at the bottom of the loop. This will save the paint and not make a bunch of noise. |
Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window
Congrats. I think it is really neat that you're going to be able to enjoy it while still working on it.

Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window
Thanks guys.
I was planning to go to Pep Boys looking for some kind of thin tubing. DUH, I never thought of a giveaway inner tube. Excellent idea! Kim, Yes, it'll be nice to use it on the weekends. I'm going to want to drive it to work on the occasional Friday too but I've got a few things to accomplish before I can do that safely: Seat belts Get the CPP disc brake kit in (I already have it) Install a manual dual master cylinder & proportioning valve Emergency brake connected Move gas tank out of the cab! Obviously, a couple of those are higher dollar items or the tools to accomplish them right are - flaring tool and tube bender. But I want to do these things myself. |
Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window
Looks good; period correct; I like the ivory around the window.
Don't think of it as Mickey Mouse painting.........think more in terms of a "utilitarian protective coating". Good job. The little tools, nuts & bolts, parts & pieces and rattle cans add up. I believe I could cover my truck inside and out with 100 dollar bills and it would not equal what I have in it so far (only slightly exaggerated).........and I'm not close to done yet. Funny that I consider it to be a "budget" project. |

These trucks will "$40-you-to-death" at Home Depot, Lowe's or OSH. When I go to The Truck Shop (and im going again today mostly cause I'll be somewhat near it) its $100-$200 easy. I actually WAS gonna use Ivory as the contrast but finally used "Almond" - which looks like a very light yellow against this green. But I like it so far. I know im probably gonna score new mirrors and just price (yeah, right!) side window & vent wing glass. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window
Ok, so today I took "G&R's 57 GMC"'s suggestion in post #384 above, stopped at the local bicycle shop to ask for an inner tube out of their trash. They said, "Take as many as you want!" I only took one and did THIS with it:
http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps8dbdaf2f.jpg Yeah, kind of meh.... But the ones the shops sell don't look much different. It is what it is I suppose. I also finally got my Craigslist-find front bumper painted on the reverse side and mounted. Thereby finishing the recent front end work: http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps6ecf3abf.jpg Hell of an improvement to me. In preparation for installing door weatherstripping, tomorrow I clean out the door interiors (loaded with crap), Ospho overnight then paint with KBS...maybe Rust Reformer; depends how bad it looks after treatment. |
Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window
It's lookin great!!
I wish I could see this cruisin in my neighborhood....hell I wish I was cruisin in it in my neighborhood =D You could chome paint the inner tubes too ha ha ha |

The inner tubes will work but I wish there were something like those "crinkle up" garden hoses I could cut up that would be neater, more "tidy". I don't like how loose the inner tube looks. |
Re: Danny Boy is BAACK! w/ '55 Big Window
The crinkle up hoses. are you talking about the bendy part of a bendy straw? =D
I've seen automotive filler....tubes? I don't know what to call them. The things that screw on to a bottle of oil, so you don't spill any. I don't know if they're long enough, but it's worth a shot. I can't find a picture of one, but it's like that, except it screws on to the bottle. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...ord=oil+funnel |

Dan you need a smaller diameter tube, one that just fits the chain
