So I took out the rubber mount between the transmission and cross member to see if dropping the back of the transmission would lessen the vibration, and it did.
So I'm going to try a combination of dropping the pinion angle down with a wedge, and lowering the back of the transmission until they're parallel. Thanks for your help. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...psreqt0x6c.jpg |

So it appears that the trans crossmember should have more of a drop in it? That crossmember has the same amount of drop as a factory crossmember that I measured. Although the engine mounts have an effect on the engine and trans angle as well. The truck I measured had the '60-'62 factory V8/auto trans engine mounts. They may be a little higher than your engine mounts. Don't know for sure.

Tilted the axle forward to get the pinion angle closer to parallel to the transmission - trying to get the slight vibration out. Not getting there.

Sorry to interrupt here but wouldn't this thread be more appropriately located in the Projects and Builds section? I didn't take the time to read all 16 pages but it sure seems like a build thread from what I'm seeing. Nothing wrong with that but it doesn't really belong in this section. Moderator? Thanks.

But I'm fine with whatever staff thinks is best. . Thanks for the video, lowbuck. It helps seeing a visual of what's happening. I probably should get an Angle Finder and get the angles correct. |

It appears that it focuses on one specific truck and its evolution over the last 5+ years. I guess if that's not build thread material, I don't know what is. Call me OCD or whatever but I prefer to have things in their proper place so as not to clutter up the general board with 16 page threads all about a single truck. Neat story, btw! |

Just to clear things up, there is no hard set rule that build threads have to be in the Projects area. The Projects area tends to be where most would look for a build thread so most folks want them there. Others start a thread in the general area, not really seeing it as a build thread (like this one) that over time becomes one. We won't generally move them unless requested by the original poster.
As for now, unless LostMy65 requests to have it moved, it will stay as is. |

Either the heavy piece of diamond plate steel in the bed, or a combination of that and old weak springs, the truck can't hardly handle a load. A guy I met yesterday gave me these heavy springs. I figured I give them a try.

Those look like 1 ton units...
You might consider swapping the springs out for a HD set of air springs.. AKA "bags"... I had a set on my 3/4 ton. I ran separate lines to Shrader valves on my license plate and they worked fantastic. |

Yeah, bags with Schrader valves is definitely on my list for the future.
These were free, so I figured I might as well install them. The truck has air shocks, and the only way I could keep the tires from rubbing on the fenders was to keep the shocks aired up. Which gave me a stiff ride. These bigger Springs have my butt up higher than I want, but the wheels I have are only 25" tall. If I was to go to 28" tires, the wheels would be an 1-1/2 closer to the fenders. These will tide me over. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...pseaf5ppje.jpg |

I used 30 spline 10 bolt axles from a nova diff..
Installed those into a, narrowed for the axels, 86 C10 8.5 inch 10 bolt. Redrilled for 5 on 5 and used truck drums.. this setup put the same wheels you have square in the center of the wheel well. .. :-) |

When I went to swap in the 3.73 rear, I popped a drum off to check the brake shoes. The springs looked clean, and the shoes were good, so I went with that, also because I couldn't get the other drum off. :-(
Well yesterday, when I pulled the wheels off to install the bigger coil springs, I figured I'd pop off the other drum. Backed the star all the way off and still couldn't it off. Three flat bars wedged in between the drum and the backing plate, and it finally popped off. Good thing. Still haven't resolved the vibration issue.
Below is a pic of the way it was at first. #1 And then the way it is now with three heavy washers under the back of the axle perches. #3 In all positions, I haven't really noticed a significant change in the type, intensity, or duration of the vibration. And it still occurs right around 37mph or 1900 rpm. My thinking is it has to be the driveline itself. If it was the pinion angle, I'd expect the vibration to change in some manner. Yeah #3 is how it should be. Have you checked your tires for separating plies? I have had tires start to separate, causing a vibration at certain speeds.

The pinion and tail shaft have to be at the same angle. Check them with a digital angle finder. Or you can down load an app for your smart phone if you have one. If you pinion shaft is at 3 degrees you tail shaft has to match at 3 degrees.

I like the app idea. I will get to confirm angles on mine. I thought if I had the top of manifold level I would be close as the manifold has the angle set to level the carb. Curious to see how you resolve this. Wished I could help truck looks good.

Alright, so I used the phone app. I laid it across the carburetor and got 2.2 degrees. Slapped it against the rear axle and got 2.2 degrees. Well, actually I used the setting in the app to rotate the angle finder 90 degrees so I could get the perpendicular angle.
The flat section of the axle where the cover mounts is perfectly perpendicular to the top of the carburetor. . Next I used a technique I found on the Internet to check if your driveline is out of balance. You jack the back wheels off the ground, start it, put it in gear, and Rev it up until you feel the vibration. Then while it's at that rpm, take a marker taped to a stick and slowly raise the marker until it barely ticks the driveline. Do it at both ends and the middle. Well, I'm pretty sure I found where the vibration is occurring. It's up by the yoke. I did a few marks up at the front and they all hit in the same place. So I shut it down and crawled underneath to inspect. While turning the driveline by hand, I noticed some slop where the yoke slips inside the transmission. . Now my question is: Should the yoke be snug in the transmission? I'm guessing it should. I think the next thing I'm going to check is find another yoke and see if it has the same slop to it. Any other ideas or suggestions? |

I thought the top of carb should be level because the manifold has a 2 or 3 degree correction to make it level. So your reading of 4 degrees at the trans I would think is more accurate. I can move my yoke in front a little but not much.

I still plan on taking it to a shop to have it balanced, I just wanted to personally tag down that it was the driveline. Next I'll move on to installing a front sway bar. Then perhaps power drum brakes. Discs are still a ways down my 'To Do' list. Thanks everyone for the help. |
