Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Started slow last week with welding the plates for the doorstrikers at the inside of the cab.
It's finished now and I have painted the inside of the cab gloss black.

I also took out the ugly, damaged headliner, there was completely NO paint under the headliner??? So I solved that myself :metal:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E...2/P1260662.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-D...2/P1260663.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-s...2/P1260666.JPG

After that I painted the roof and the ventcowl, so that I can put the windshield in next week. The windshield is one big thing, always in the way of things and expansive.....

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P...2/P1260665.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--...2/P1260667.JPG

As the paint has to dry, ofcourse ;), I started with the exhaust.
I have made the downpipes from the headers/collectors.
Now my question for you guys ans girls:

Should I go with a balancepipe or not???

I have a 350 with a TH400 and am making a true dual exhaust.
Whats excactly is the benefit of a balancepipe? I've read somewhere it has to do with the torque the engine makes, but does it make so much difference?
Engine is stock, its gonna be a daily driver, not a race car

Please fill me in on that, thanks!

Been searching for exhaust options, what to do or not...

Came across this article that explanes a lot:

For those who are interested, it's a lot to read ;)

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

H v X - for what you are doing I think its just more labor than running two pipes out the back with some nice Flowmaster 40 or 44 series and dumping them before the rear axle....

Typically its done when you want to spend the time and money to really 'design' a "tuned exhaust system" for a specific motor assembly than it makes sense to do it. Or buy one thats already been engineered by Borla or Magnaflow or somebody like that. But just putting in a crossover or H or X pipe is something that just doesnt do what they say it will.

good luck!

Good article, i just run a pipe to each side, no H or X. but..i haven't been out for a testdrive yet..so that might change

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

your fab work is top-notch. love your ingenuity.
family were vacationing in Big Bend last year. neighbors were from Holland. we talked several nights. one night I made muffins in a Dutch oven. showed it to them and they looked confused. never had heard of a Dutch oven.
also, when I read your build title, I thought it was a project you were going to share with another member. Going Dutch.
great build!
few questions:
can you post a link for the "national Dutch "CL"?
what is "paintable body kit" you used on the underside of cab?

RockinKees 09-26-2015 06:08 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks for your kind words, Deejaaa1.

I know the Dutch oven, and I don't know who uses that nowadays ;)
I think the most of us fire up the BBQ

Our "National Craiglist" is called "Marktplaats", www.marktplaats.nl.
There you find all kinds of things, not only cars.

The bodykit I used is Teroson RB53 for the seams (http://www.henkel.co.uk/2838_UKE_HTM...=8797701636097), before and after that I primered all the sheetmetal, then a layer of Valvoline Tectyl 190, a sort of bedliner. After that I put on three more layers of gloss black paint. Hope that's enough for a few years....

And Going Dutch....Building it all by myself and I pay for the whole project myself :lol:

I'm Dutch and living in the Netherlands so that's why the build title ;)

Truck is looking great - keep it up!

RockinKees 10-08-2015 02:56 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks 58-GMC!!

After searching the allmighty Web, I decided to go with a balancepipe.
I made an exhaust that clears all the important stuff under the truck, only have to make some heat shields for the LPG (propane) parts.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/XT...b=w694-h925-no

Now I have to think what to do with the end pipes....go through the rollpan or dump just in front of the rollpan.....

As we planned to put the windshield in tommorow, so that it's savely away , I put gauze in the cowl vent, to prevent leaves and such go into the vent.
After that bolted it in place.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Q8...K=w694-h925-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/xS...2=w694-h925-no

I also mocked up the steering, it was quite a puzzle to get it right!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nT...N=w694-h925-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rq...=w1122-h842-no

It's a little hard to see, but the double U-joit is inline withe the column.
It goes around the header, and have to use two support bearings. At first I had one support bearing, but that wasn't going to work, way too much flex.

So now I have it working, made two bearing supports, the upper bearing was easy, the lower one exists out four little parts:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/eN...=w1122-h842-no

After welding you get this:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Np...=w1122-h842-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/XP...=w1122-h842-no

Just grind it smooth and bolt it in place:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8N...H=w694-h925-no

This is what it becomes. The upper bearing support has to be finished of course.
All I have to do now is to adjust the whole thing, drill the shafts and put some paint on it. Easy :lol:

For the column at the inside I made this, two parts and a clamp I made earlier. (Clamp is hanging in upper right corner of the picture.) It's all welded up already, but the pic is gone...I make a new one tomorrow ;)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/my...n=w694-h925-no

Sorry for the large pics, I couldn't get them any smaller....

To be continued....

this is my lack of knowledge speaking: is that double u-joint going to work? it looks almost freakish :) (and I mean that as a compliment hahaha)

RockinKees 10-10-2015 05:29 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks guys!

Yes Steve, that double U-joint is working great, as long as you use two support bearings.
I made a small mistake by ordering one support bearing, but that gave way too much flex. At least in my setup.
I added another support bearing and the flex is gone.
Now I can steer the truck the way I want ;)

You can come over and check it if you want :mm:

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Just some small things done today, at home.

First I repaired the door windows, they were all cracked:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/mW...=w1122-h842-no

Took them out of their metal frame, went a lot easier than I suspected :metal:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gl...=w1122-h842-no

Then put the new glass in and painted the frames. It looks like new again ;)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Ek...=w1122-h842-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/eQ...=w1122-h842-no

I also took the speedo apart and painted the backplate black again. The PO had removed all the paint so it was metal coloured, didn't like that.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ZP...X=w694-h925-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dM...V=w694-h925-no

Last but not least, I painted the back window :metal:
I wanted it to be dark, but put foil on it was not for me... I came across a Motip rattlecan that is used to paint plastic back lights of cars. Sent an email to the manifacturer and asked if it was suitable for real glass, no problem was the answer. So I sprayed the back window :lol:
It's fairly dark, just as I wanted, you can still see through :c2:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/vr...=w1122-h842-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/n8...=w1122-h842-no

It's beginning to look like a full on Rat Rod Restoration :lol::metal:
Oh well, if you can do it all yourself, what's the problem then??

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Nice job on the door glass, did you have someone cut it for you locally? And I never knew you could get spray on window tint!

RockinKees 10-10-2015 06:36 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

I also didn't know that Gary, just tried and it worked ;)

Nice Progress Kees!
Thanks Mark!

Some small things done this time:
Painted the back of the cab.
First semi gloss black:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c...2/IMG_2673.JPG

Then white:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-u...2/IMG_2678.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-a...2/P1260961.JPG

Then finally, two coats of high gloss red:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X...2/IMG_2686.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2...2/P1260964.JPG

In the near future, when all is dry enough, I pinstripe a fine white line between the black and red.

Now some fabwork again, the doorlatches...
You probably know I use BMW latches. I want the original doorhandles to work with de BMW latches, so some fabwork is required.

To freshen your memory:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-V...2/P1260968.JPG

Some ordinairy homemade steel parts:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y...2/P1260969.JPG

Turned a bushing that goes over the pin of the doorhandle:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-d...2/P1260970.JPG

Fast forward.....made the ordinairy steel parts into something I could use

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-m...2/P1260971.JPG

When you push the doorhandle, this is what it looks like, actuated:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-h...2/P1260972.JPG

After several times of pushing the handle and lock and unlock, I made an adjustment: I made the lower lever 5 mm longer, now it's way better :metal:
Also it's fully adjustable by turning the bushing or the nuts ;)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...2/P1260974.JPG

It's now rough, but it gets cleaned up before the steel plate covers it all

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A...2/P1260966.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y...2/P1260965.JPG

Again, this plate is going to be a lot nicer when I'm finished....
Next is to make the inside handle to work with this latch, but that should be an easy task...
Also, I wanted to use the electric BMW lock motors, the black box on the top of the latch, but that doesn't work, I don't have the room for it anymore.
Now I have to search for an aftermarket Central lock system that works with this latch. I think an universal set will work, we'll see.

Till next time!!

Thanks again guys!

Quite day at home...
A few weeks ago I cleaned the hood emblem.
Now all emblems are painted the way I wanted, it looks great!

Too bad I don't have the "Fleetside" emblems....

As it was when I bought the truck:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z...2/P1260958.JPG

After cleaning:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-J...2/P1260959.JPG

Painted, you can hardly see the difference :lol:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-I...2/IMG_2694.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-R...2/IMG_2695.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-k...2/IMG_2696.JPG

Next I made some indicator lights ( or Idiot Lights as some of you call them ) and drilled them into the dash.
A high beam indicator, which is blue in Europe, at the original place, at the left side of it, a red charging light, and at the right side a yellow brake fluid warning light. All LED's.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Spent the whole day making door latches ;)
I think I've got them covered, besides the paint that is:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G...2/P1260976.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x...2/P1260977.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-L...2/P1260978.JPG

Only thing now is connect the inside doorhandles and make a central locking system.
So, on to clean the doors and put some paint on them!
Again, a little problem off the list :metal:

Hi Kees
A quick question about the inspection.
You say you had to change the headlights.
Did they not like the US ones?
Also do you have to drive there or can I take on a trailer?
I have my inspection in 4 weeks.
thanks
Nick
(Englishman living in Holland)

RockinKees 10-29-2015 04:13 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Nick, sorry for the late replay...

Sealed beam headlights are allowed nowadays, IF they give a good image, I mean you must have a certain line between the light and dark side of the light, as you have with halogen headlights.
Mine were not at the right hight, so there I was unlucky....
I also changed them because of the amount of light the halogen gives instead of sealed beams.

You can drive there, but you have to get an insurance and a day registration. That day of registration is called "éendags kenteken" in Dutch, it's free of charge. You can get it online at the RDW website.
It's only valid on the day of inspection.
If you use a trailer, you don't have to have an insurance or an "ééndags kenteken". It's what you prevere...

Where is your inspection taking place?
If you have any further questions, please ask!
Oh, and when will we see your buildthread coming?? ;)
