Primed the nose, the underside of the steps (so I can weld the reinforcement, then I'll prime the tops), as well as the inside of one of the fenders (so I can flip it over tomorrow). No blasting done today because comedy of activity timing.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Finished priming the fender the other day, along with the steps after I welded the brace underneath. No idea if short steps are reinforced underneath or not; can't hurt.

I've been doing more blasting. The left rear fender is blasted, the step supports are blasted, and two bed rails are now blasted.

Also filled a couple holes in the bed sides that used to hold something. Well, a couple were for the spare tire mount, but dunno about the others.

Started thinking about organizing the air ride next.

SkinnyG - the factory short steps are not braced. Only bolted to the support bracket from the front bed cross sill and to the bottom of the fender.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

I kinda had a hunch that was so. Still, can't hurt, eh?

One more bed brace to blast, and I think I'll be doing the final light blasting of the bed for primer.

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...4s-672x378.jpg

In between the previous sandblasting episodes (waiting for the air compressor to cool, for example), I started placing the Air Ride components.

While I initially planned to tuck an air tank or two inside bulbous rear fenders, I ended up placing the kit's air tank on the left side leg of the "X". This frame makes it tricky to place a tank, though it is easier with the bed floor raised. You need to take into account room for the driveshaft, room to plumb the lines, tank servicability, access to tank drain, operation of rear sway bar, serviceability of differential, etc..... The compressor will likely go right where I have it in the picture. I'll be running single exhaust down the passenger side, so no room over there.

Finished blasting the last of the bed rails. Also blasted all the metalwork/shrinking marks from the inside of the bed.

Outside of the bed next.

Still need to blast the hood, the grill, the headlight bezels, and the cab.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Blasted the outside of the bed, and some parts of the bed bottom I had missed. Next will be to up-end the bed, finish blasting the underside, and then should be ready for primer. I hope. I'm always ready for surprises.

I have about 15 hours worth of time-lapse sandblasting video.

Great job SkinnyG!! I could use some of that energy here!! but at over 100 degrees... it makes it hard.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

We're currently around a livable 95°F. I did do a lot of sand blasting when we were at 111°F and everything was on fire.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

In the morning I flipped everything over and did the other side. What surprised me is the bed parts took an entire gallon of Epoxy Primer. Mixed 1:1 with activator, that's two gallons sprayed! At over $200 for both, I can see this truck taking $1000 in primer alone. Wow. I'm pretty sure I put three gallons of primer (and three gallons activator) into the cab and doors, front fenders and nose. Hmmm. Make that $2200 in primer once the cab and frame are done. Wow.

I'm sure it's frustrating not seeing more progress with the time involved, but just think how good it will feel in the end when you get it in epoxy and you know that it was bare/clean metal. Keep up the good work!

SkinnyG 07-21-2021 11:19 AM

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

It is slow progress, and I get that. I'm saving myself upwards of the $1800 I was quoted to blast absolutely everything on the truck like I am doing. The blaster cost me $135 and I love it.

The rough part for me is being stuck inside my head while blasting. My brain needs to be occupied; I really struggle with mindless tasks.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

AND picked up some PPG Delfleet paint for the frame when I get done blasting the frame. I don't want to sand the frame, so if I can blast it, epoxy prime it, and then paint it within the epoxy's re-coat window, I won't have to sand. Yay me.

The Delfleet is looking to be a fairly positive paint for final colour too.

350TacoZilla 07-21-2021 11:17 PM

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Any idea how the delfleet is on rust prevention? I know rust is the enemy around here so whatever works good for keeping rust away on something mainly unseen like the frame is what I'd use regardless of finished look lol.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

It's a polyurethane enamel, so that will be the standard. Polyurethane and an Epoxy primer is about as good as I'm going to get.

Regardless, it lasted 60 years with poo coatings.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Made a wheeled dolly to move the cab around, as it's next to be blasted.

And then realized I need to add some more brackets to the frame, as it will be blasted after the cab.

I also machined the poly cab mounts. The 60-62 cab mounts are different than the 63-66 mounts, the early ones being square, and different thicknesses. My '61 had the 1" mounts on the rear, and 5/8" mounts on the front.

Energy Suspension's mounts are both 1" front and back, so I chucked the offending mounts in the lathe, and cut them down to 5/8" for the front.

Not sure I'm in love with poly mounts, but here we go. There isn't really other options that I've found, and rubber is a lot harder to cut down than poly.

Crap ton of smoke in the air as most of BC is currently on fire. Couldn't see the sun at all this evening, and it was a while 'till sunset.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Don't want to put the cab back on the frame without having Raptor under it.

Can't put Raptor under it if I'm going to weld something on it later.

Gotta figure out seats, and gas pedal now.

Dang it.

SkinnyG 07-29-2021 10:23 PM

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

In preparing to remove and blast the cab, I need to locate mount the gas pedal. In order to determine the gas pedal location, I need to mount the seats.

I cut the mounts off the original (trashed) seat, and fabricated a method to attach some Honda Civic buckets. I will be modifying the Civic back seat to be a center-seat/console.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Those seats fit remarkably well.

P. :D

SkinnyG 07-30-2021 12:06 PM

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

I set them so that the rails are centered on the brackets I made. The seat can go far enough back to touch the back wall. The seat also moves forward enough that even my wife can probably drive it (if she had to).

I fab'd the brackets to place the seat at the same angle that it was in the Civic - one challenge of fitting seats is getting the seat bottom at the right angle to support your thighs correctly.

The purists would cringe that I'm not using a bench seat. I totally don't care. (big grin).

Seat belts, also from the Honda Civic. 3x3" 1/8" Shoulder mount washer, to be welded in from behind:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...18-672x378.jpg

3x3" 1/8" Floor mount washer, to be welded in from behind:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...14-672x378.jpg

1-1/2" x 1/4" "L" bracket:

Belts mounted (yes, I'll make a cover):

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...33-672x378.jpg

Also re-fabricated the turbo oil feed "T." The old one was too short (the turbo feed hindered the cam sensor connection), and did not have any way of removing it (no hex).

Old and busted (left), vs soon-to-be-new-hotness (right, unfinished):

Oil-pressure-sender-turbo-feed-"tee" finished and installed:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...69-672x378.jpg

Welded some carriage bolts in a few un-needed holes to mount the gas pedal bracket, welded up the gas pedal linkage opening, and added nutserts for the fuel pressure regulator:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...75-672x378.jpg

Patch. Will be welded once I've blasted and epoxy primered inside:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...70-672x378.jpg

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...73-672x378.jpg

I "think" I'm ready to blast and prime the cab.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Skinny,

Seen a few people use the oil pressure sender as the take off for the Turboooooo now rather than the blanking plate above the oil filter.

Was there a specific reason for this or just easier packaging?

Still a while away from having to make this decision but like to understand why people take a certain route.

Good progress as always.

P. :D

SkinnyG 08-09-2021 11:20 AM

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

The blanking plate above the oil filter feeds the oil cooler, and is on totally opposite side of the motor. Not the easiest to get to, and snaking the feed line all the way over there seemed risky to me. I want the line to avoid any extra heat.

I don't believe it matters one bit. Pressurized oil is pressurized oil, and the sender is getting the same oil and pressure that is at the filter.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

We had some rain recently, and the ground was still too wet to start blasting the cab.

So, I did some blasting in my blast cabinet, after changing the gun:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...82-672x378.jpg

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...84-672x378.jpg

This in addition to the altered siphon-feed on the bottom of the cabinet, and this cabinet is freaking awesome. I love it!!

I had not yet epoxied the hood supports, so after blasting a few more items in the cabinet, I sprayed them:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...86-672x378.jpg

I am going to hide the air ride gauges behind the ashtray door.

I cut off the back of the ashtray, and experimented with card stock to find the shape and position I wanted using a CNC-Plasma-cut gauges plate I made at work:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...76-672x378.jpg

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...77-672x378.jpg

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...78-672x378.jpg

Folded up and TIG'd together, the gauge plate screws on from behind:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...79-672x378.jpg

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...80-672x378.jpg

Then I had to figure out how to make the ashtray open again:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...81-672x378.jpg

Which I did by making my own hinge and door:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...87-672x378.jpg

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...97-672x378.jpg

Which reveals like this (roughly driver's seat - cab is on its back right now):

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...95-672x378.jpg
