Just sayin, :D (read my 68 SC motor swap) The VHX gauges work great with these motors. Would recommend you get the Bim 01-2 OBDII module. I will allow you to display tranny temp, IAT, gear pattern, and a host of other things. You can have who ever builds your harness to pull the data wire so you don't have to connect it to your OBDII port. Have fun! and let me know if you have any questions. |

I'll go ahead with the stock motor as-is, for now. I was on the fence, but after your statement, I'm completely on solid ground. I had no idea the trans would be so hard to tune. Glad you pointed that out though. I'll look into the BIM 01-2. I've read up on it before and liked the abilities it has, but didn't want to plug it into the port and lose the gauges when I'm plugging in a reader or something. I have a friend close by who recently did a Gen V 5.3 L83 and he did his own wiring with the help of another member. He said I could do it myself, so I think I'll try it. Any idea where I can find the wiring pinout for this setup? Maybe some pointers and an idea of what wire you're referring to for the data wire? I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions, but I'll start with your 68 thread. Followed it since late 2012, but I could definitely use a refresher. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
It's just the data line that feeds the OBDII port. Check this website out: http://lt1swap.com/geniv_harness.htm
LS1Tech.com is good also. |

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
When you get it tuned they can delete afm/dod from ecm so it will stay in 8cyl mode at all times.

I do have some bad news to go along with it. FedEx Freight shipped the drivetrain and wouldn't you know it... DAMAGE!!! The harness is pinched (at least one severed wire), intake is broken/cracked, 2 coils are broken, and plug wires. Several harness plugs are broken, including one for the ecm (the blue J1 plug), all 4 O2 sensors are damaged and they mangled the dipstick/fill tubes... not that I was planning on using them, but dam! :cuss::cuss::cuss: Attachment 1556570 Notice the two plug wires hanging in front of the manifold? Yeah, broken... Attachment 1556571 This is the worst O2 sensor, but all are bent and 2 more have exposed copper wires Attachment 1556572 The worst coil, but the 2nd has the harness plug broken out of it, with part still in the coil Attachment 1556573 Pieces of the intake fell off... check the fins, they are all supposed to be straight and vertical. :banghead: Attachment 1556574 The broken J1 plug. I have contacted the seller and they are going to put in a claim and refund me the cost of the damage. Hopefully FedEx will cover legitimate costs and not just what they think it's worth. Although, I can't expect the seller to eat the cost of shipping damage, I hope they all make this good. |

Attachment 1556577 Attachment 1556578 Attachment 1556579 The trans tail shaft seal was damaged, and there was wood particles inside... sorry for the blurry pic, didn't notice it until today. Attachment 1556575 Attachment 1556576 |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
crap that sucks. hopefully we can find the connectors without too much trouble.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
The seller is trying to find a value for the damaged parts so I can get a partial refund for the damaged cost. They are also looking for a harness to just replace the one I have. Hopefully they have better luck than I do. Called the local Chevy dealership and talked to the parts department with the VIN and was told they had two different part numbers, but couldn't get a price. Neither of those part numbers matched up with what my harness has on it.
I would just replace it, but Speartech is one of the only places I can find that does wiring for the 6L90 transmission with the engine harness. And I can't tell without calling them first if they would even do it for this new of a computer. Regardless, their harness is $950 without any add ons..... that's a bit too rich for my blood. I emailed Brendan at LT1swap.com and he replied and told me he has no info for the E78 ECM, and does not do any programming on them either. Looks like that's a dead end for me. Hopefully GM didn't do a lot of changing on their wire colors from one ECM to the other. I think I'll see if I can trace the wires and start my own pinout. We'll see if I can do it. I'm not an electrical engineer, or even a fan of wiring, so this is going to be a BIG challenge. If anyone knows another company that makes swap harnesses, let me know. I'll look them up and see if they can provide me with a new harness for this swap. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Man, I really hope they make that right for you. That'll be a sweet set-up once you get it all straightened out.
|
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Ugh...they must have piled other packages on it.
Check BP, PSI, Howell for harness options. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Thanks for the suggestions Doug, I've already put out requests for Speartech and Howell, but I've just added BP and PSI. Hopefully one of them is able to do this with the new ECM.
|
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
So a little update...
Speartech and PSI both told me they do not support the E78 ECM. PSI said they suggest buying their harness and an E38 ECM to work with their harness. BP never got back to me, nor did Howell. I shall be trying to practice thinning out my junk harness before I get the replacement, so I know what needs to be kept and what can to go. I did get confirmation from the seller that they have already acquired all the broken parts and will be shipping them to me, except the harness. They have put in a special order with GM to have a harness pulled from the assembly line. No idea how they have that kind of pull, but that will be awesome! Hopefully it works out. No ETA on that yet though. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Here's the engine, somewhat stripped getting ready for paint.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
And here it is in all the Chevy Orange glory!
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pscp33ufqm.jpg I will be painting the crank pulley and all the accessories semi-gloss black. The crank pulley has already started to rust a bit, so it needed painting anyway. Don't mind the overspray. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Awesome motor.
Great job on da paint |

Looks great Duane! I saw a guy on Instagram that makes harnesses, I think he's @modernvintagesystems

Some more parts are starting to show up.
The transmission cooler line adapater from Sweet Performance (eBay) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pszeftckvm.jpg and the Tanks Inc. drop in fuel pump and corvette style filter/regulator with AN fittings. (changed my mind later, using factory pump from the express van.) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psnvtr1v15.jpg |

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
New parts are always cool. Love DD gauges too. Guess I haven't been following them closely...looks like they do air pressure sensors and display. Probably nice components.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Really nice parts!
|
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Nice parts! Who makes the adapter plates?
|
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Thanks guys! The adapter plates are made by a company called StreetRays. I found them on ebay. They also make a billet aluminum version, but these were powdercoated steel.

Edit: Turns out the guy misunderstood my asking price. Thought I was selling it for 10% of what I was asking. Well under the cost of just the front runner that was on it. I still have it, but I'm not trying really hard to sell it yet. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
More parts have shown up...
Doug Thorley Tri-Y ceramic coated headers (324Y-C) and Summit racing's "header buddies" which are like a ball and socket flange... supposed to not need gaskets, which I'm liking since my block huggers are blowing out gaskets like crazy. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps2etiygej.jpg I masked off and painted the throttle body semi-gloss black, like the accessories. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psik14pk83.jpg And started reassembling the motor http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psaqtebzri.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pszpfncm5i.jpg The coil covers will be painted, but they were test fit in these pictures. As for the damaged parts, the seller has informed me that they have been shipped (except the harness) and they should be here next week. Still waiting on GM for the harness. |

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Time to catch up to where I'm at now...
Bought some Accel Extreme 9000 Ceramic spark plug wires and got them installed to check the fit. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pspyjk8mkx.jpg Had to return the trans mount dipstick since it was too short. The only way it would work is if it was mounted to the side of the bellhousing, where it would be behind the header collector. Obviously that wasn't going to work, so I bought the firewall mount version instead. It's 24" instead of about 18" (can't remember exactly how long it was). I'll have to make a different mount piece to get it bolted to the engine, but that shouldn't be difficult. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps0jsuxpdm.jpg Also received the fuse block, circuit breaker, connectors, wire seals and plugs. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps8v8cq0w2.jpg Then I started disassembling... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psmzsj1qzd.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psmbinvy4q.jpg and found a little bit of rust that will need to be fixed. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psubyqieyj.jpg There are other places, but this is the worst of it so far. I'll be cleaning up the firewall a bit before I pull the motor. I'm going to fill the blower motor hole, pull the A/C and get that plate welded up and remove the bolt heads. This is going to be a somewhat slow process. I'm still waiting on the wiring harness from GM, but otherwise I've received all the replacement parts for the damaged pieces. Hopefully the harness won't be too much longer. |
