Dennis, I dont mean to intrude on your thread but since you are doing such a nice job on the driprails and others have inquired about just shaving it, I thought I would share some pictures of a shaved drip rail and why I think you are right that it leaves something missing.

BTW this is NOT my truck! It was done really really nice with SS hardware everwhere but I think those modern mirrors are hideous. (hope this isn't anyone's truck here)

It doesn't look that bad. I kinda like it. Around the doors is where it looks funny. I wonder how it would look with the back part shaved, and the front flared to where it dips up. You know blend it into it. I agree with the mirrors.
BTW Nice truck. Except for the mirrors.

Changed my mind about shaving the edge. I hate it and the mirrors.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I think the problem with the door is that the fit and finish wasnt done right, the gap is uneven and the door itself sinks into the cab where it should be level.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I've seen it were they rounded the top corners of the door.It looked better that way. Still hate it.

What I should have said was the front, and back looks good. But around the doors don't look right.
Dave good thing you saw this truck before you did yours. :uhmk:

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I'm in no hurry. I'll wait to see what yours looks like when you get it done. So far it looks good. It hard to tell untill you get paint on it.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Well I did it. I cut the back drip rail off. Now I have to figure how to make the flare blend in.
http://belair.smugmug.com/photos/621606466_rgCg6-L.jpg

I made the flare blend up into the shape of the roof.
http://belair.smugmug.com/photos/621606552_dswsp-L.jpg

I tried a few different ways. This one to me looked the best. Here you can see how it will shape up. If you notice I also filled the holes for the trim behind the door.
http://belair.smugmug.com/photos/621607802_kDv5Y-L.jpg

I still have to more shaping. When I put the skim coat of Bondo on it, I'll be able to see the shape better.

BE HONEST GUYS. HOW YOU YOU LIKE IT? I really want your opinion.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=179289 look at page 2 and see what he did to his doors. Now those are some lines. You need more stuff to do anyway. I think how you blended the flare in is fine. Hard to say though untill you see it in paint. Are you going to add any metal to where you took the drip edge off the front of the door? I'm going to weld up my seam above the windshield it's not half the size of yours though.:sexy:

I agree with daverod....spray it with paint. Its hard to tell with the work still in progress. I hope for your sake you like it after all the work.

I like the front...just don't know about the rear......

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Looking at again the back kinda looks like a Targa Top with it being smooth from the roof down to the sides. I think your all right. I have to Bondo it and shoot some primer over it to really see what it will look like. Before I do the other side.

Dave I'm not doing anything with the drip edge was. The door fits good after I adjusted it.
Thanks for the comments guys

I would like to see a little color on it. I've thought about shaving mine but it looks like everyone wants to do it.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I did a little mud forming to see what it will look like if the flare went down along the door. I didn't ground off the top part. I just add the bottom to see what it will look like. Keep in mind the final will look a lot better that this. It's all bondo.
Any ideas here? :fb:

Something is needed around that corner, just not sure what. What if you came straight back instead of coming down and then tapered it in towards the panel?

I thought of that too. I've been looking on the net at vintage trucks with drip rails. Most of the drip rails go down the back of the door. Not sure what I'm going to do yet. I have to do more experimenting. :uhmk:

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Yeah that little lip needs to go. without the driprail it just looks naked. Maybe if you molded from the top down to the windo it would look better, But then I know it takes away the style of our trucks. The concave over hang just looks naked without it.

Yeah I not really sold on the lip idea either. The next thing I was going to try will be continue it back and fade it away. Tomorrow is another day.

I think it needs to run to the back of the cab then blend in.;)

Man that is a tough one Dennis, I guess those are the "pains" of setting a new trend. I think something good will come out though I have no doubt!

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

maibe try to get the driprail to end in the low corner of the spoiler thingy en blend it in from there .
from wat i see now rounding the rear corner of the door would be futile too the front of the spoilerthingy goes straight intoo the rear gap of the door .
maibe you need to iliminate the spoiler thingy in total cut it of the roof and replace it with a front part from another 65 truck turned around , that gets a smoot roof all the way to the back and you get a piece of driprail all around , you prolly need to put some metal under it to close the gap to the rearwindow

looked at the picture again are you in for some fabricating ? use a front windshield in the back too

That's the next thing I was going to try. Bring it all the way to the back, and blend it in. The other idea you have sounds good, but I have so much more I want to do to the truck. Besides I wouldn't change the basic look of the roof. I like that bump, and the way the roof over hang's.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I have to weld up the bottom of the rail to make it match the front part. Then a final skim coat.

I forgot to mention that I used part of the A pillar to form the new drip rail that I just made.
