I have not had much time to work on the truck but have continued stocking up on parts. I did manage to install the brake lines. I bought mine from inline tube for a 71 swb. I thought installing brake lines would be a 30 minute job...tops... well it took a little &^$%&^$%&^ Grrrrr and well you know.. so here are a couple pics. Sorry they are dark, the sun is not cooperating nor is the weather around here. Way too cold and too much snow for me!

I hear ya on those pre-bent lines. It's especially helpful when they fold them in half to get them in a box.

I though unbending that one was the easy part  The staring at spaghetti lines trying to figure out where they go and then making adjustments by hand to make them fit was the bad part. I think next time I will buy a nice flare tool and make my own. I say that now anyways. They were convenient but far from perfect. Hope you are enjoying the weather this week :ito:

Sooo where were we... I spent some time degreasing and painting the engine a few weeks ago and stocked up on gaskets and other parts. Finally got the nerve to get after it this morning.

First activity was the timing set. My chain was a bit loose.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psu5azhkvt.jpg

I pulled the cam sprocket and crank gear. Pressed on the new crank gear. put some clevite bearing lube on the back of the cam sprocket where it mates to the thrust plate and installed the sprocket and chain.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psrh9wewjr.jpg

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psm42ivgzy.jpg

Installed the cam bolts with threadlocker and then oiled the chain, I guess a smart guy would oil the chain before putting it on... doing it last was messy  This engine also had a sprocket that slides on after the crank gear, didn't get a pic of that though. Strange little differences on these engines.

Next I installed the new timing cover, yes it is plastic. :uhmk: Why the crap did they use plastic timing covers on these engines (96-98+ Vortec). It must be a conspiracy so you can't replace just the crank seal.:uhmk:

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...pssyux3qml.jpg

Lastly I installed the one piece oil pan gasket. Man these are nice, screw those old 4 piece things and silicone goo.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psannvb7u9.jpg

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psr77ph3ny.jpg

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...ps31zg2qxo.jpg

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psvzyuwfgw.jpg

I plan to drop the trans and replace the rear main next as well as take the trans to the car wash. No more home degreasing, that sucks . I searched on line and everyone says you can pull the retainer and replace the one piece rear main seal and reinstall without disturbing the oil pan so hopefully that should go pretty easy. If not I will loosen the pan back off a little.

Thanks Mike, You are making some great progress! I will have to get back out that way soon and see it in person again.

I had my lower intake manifold cleaned at the machine shop. After seeing these pictures you will see what a great idea EGR is, I know I know, it serves a purpose... well I had to do away with the tar maker...

Here are the before shots.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2y1dh9hz.jpg

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psf5etocxy.jpg

Here it is back from the machine shop. just a little crud left up front. I used a couple cans of carb cleaner to get what they missed.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...pskagwd1eg.jpg

After a little carb cleaner and elbow grease. I had to get new intake bolts, A couple of the original were stretched. might as well get ARP...

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

So back to the EGR.. I drew a simple block off plate and cut it out on our water jet at work. .25" aluminum.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...pscrxl41a5.jpg

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psmydsx0k9.jpg

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...pstw4iliuw.jpg

Installed the block off (temporarily) and installed the intake using Fel-pro MS98000T gaskets. Stabbed the distributor too.

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

You might have noticed the wrench cut outs in that sheet. I designed m own AN wrenches and learned that .25" aluminum is not thick enough for hose ends. Here are a couple shots of a bigger wrench I made.

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

I also got started on the fuel system. I am using all Russell products AN hose, tube and fittings. At the tank I used -6 pro classic hose fuel supply and return. The rollover vent is a 1/2" npt ebay piece. The hose runs to bulkhead fittings in the crossmember just in front of the tank and then I will be bending my own 3/8" aluminum lines with 37* AN tube nuts/sleeves. From the fuel filter to intake up front I am using original (97 Tahoe) flex fuel lines for now, I will upgrade to Russell hose later once it is up and running.

67c10rustbuket 04-19-2014 01:25 AM

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

I will have to shorten the fuel supply hose to keep it from extending under the bed cross sills and potentially rubbing. I need it to be pointing straight at the driver frame rail. Didn't think about that untill after I made the hoses and installed them. :banghead: Just learning as I go.

Thanks brother, sorry about your power stroke. I am progressing very slowly :smoke:

Ok so it turns out I had to drop the oil pan 1/2" to get the rear main seal retainer back in once I replaced the seal. I think the smart thing would be to just leave the retainer on the block while you replace the seal. Now I know for the future...

Rear main pic

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psqkvpfj0s.jpg

Then I put the flywheel back on, torqued and loc-tite of course. I found out installing a trans on a rolling chassis is super easy ;)

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

Back to the EGR, once I had the blockoff plate made and installed I needed to plug the hose from the intake to the exhaust manifold. I am too cheap to order a $20 plug from GMPP so I cut the flare fitting off the original tube. cut a slug and had our machine shop guys tig the slug in the fitting and I faced it on our lathe. Then I got a copper flare cap, These are used where you remove a flare line that needs blocked off. Perfect for this since the flare nut wont bottom out and seal properly alone.

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

I cleaned and painted the accessory brackets, installed a new water pump, overpriced bypass hose, temp sensor, crank position sensor, cleaned, painted and installed the old Power steering pump, old style heater hose fitting ( I hate those quick connect fittings, they are a great way to get stranded for a long time...), Installed the hedders, Hedman PN 69010.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psq8wmxnn2.jpg

67c10rustbuket 07-26-2014 04:33 PM

Re: Rustbuket 67 build "Georgia"

I also cleaned and installed the starter. This drivetrain was missing the dust shield on the bell housing so I have to go to pull a part and get one and a few other little parts.

Now with the Hedders on I started the exhaust. I am using a Flowmaster S bend assortment box and Summit racing H pipe balance tube kit.

Hedders fit pretty good

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psebmbest2.jpg

The first pipe getting mocked up. Exhaust work is not much fun when its 100* outside. I was dripping in sweat!!

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psasphzu1j.jpg

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...pseknqzzoi.jpg

Driver side pipe mocked up

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psp2o9dsay.jpg

Getting it all tucked up over the trans X member. I think I am going to split the trans X member so I can actually get the tranny out for service in the future..

I installed the O2 sensor bungs and started fitting up the Summit H pipe.

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psvqgbjdwd.jpg

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psyavguvwm.jpg

Oh and the driver side hedder..

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8p9yurgx.jpg

I also installed the old school oil filter adapter and filter (I removed the oil cooler adapter).

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psbi5fxnry.jpg

http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...psqwvsgvsd.jpg

I was fitting up the rest of the H pipe and on out to the mufflers but I caught a snag with this crossover pipe. It is not low enough to clear the driveshaft so I have done a bunch of measuring and head scratching then ordered a 45* bend. Busy weekend anyway so I fixed the shower door and heading off to the church shortly. I hope to get it welded up to, and including the mufflers next weekend.

As you can see here there is not enough bend in the crossover

This is how I plan to route it through the crossmember. Probably have to shorten the long straight leg to get the offset closer to the pivot of the training arm just incase, to maximize clearance.

Always wondered just how important that H pipe is. They are such a PITA to get into lowered trucks. I am dreading the exhaust work more than literally anything else on mine. I would gladly do body work before exhaust work.

Hey, Dan! Wanted to let you know the first page of your thread came in real handy today when I was working on the door pillar. Check out the last page of my thread for the details; don't want to take up space on your thread. Would like to know how you re-attached the screw cage thingy, though.

Thanks for the help!

Hey bud, I never ran an H before so I thought I would try one out. Definitely not needed but I want to keep the exhaust tone constant rather than pop pop poppy.

I got the new crossover pipe installed. Much better driveshaft clearance.

I also made some flanges so I can change the mufflers if I decide I'm too old for the ones I have now. I made gaskets out of .125" soft aluminum and had the tool and die shop anneal them in an oven to make them softer.
