Dropped in the distributor added some wires and some shiny valve covers now she’s all ready to go, to the muffler shop. ;)

Thanks for the compliments you guys!

You know this old shiny repro set of valve covers w/o the brake booster notch (bought by mistake) have been sitting on a shelf for ever waiting for the right project to come along.

Through a friend of a friend I met a father and son team that used to run and work a local muffler shop for over a decade. They kept one of the benders and do some mechanic/exhaust work on the side. I’ve heard very good things and expect they’ll do a great job and for a reasonable price.

Thanks deejaaa1!

It’s back and the exhaust looks pretty darn good to me, parts and labor out the door $300. We'd paid $60 for the used mufflers so that puts us all in at $360. It’ll go back later for a balance tube, possibly O2 bungs (?) and extensions out the back once the overdrive and the bed are installed.

Thanks Rick they do good work and treated the K30 like it was theirs the entire time they had it, I couldn't ask for better. I'll tell you though at this point I'm just jones'n to fire it off!

That’s a good question Scott, these mufflers sat on the shelf so long I’ve forgotten. I looked them up again this morning so here’s a couple of Flowmaster links
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/?p...42552&x=10&y=9 and a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=MEUdbL_UiD4 they’re a 50 Series Delta Flow. They sure are some big old trash cans!

Here’s a little temp wiring for our fancy run stand, on off switch, temp, tach & oil pressure gauge.

It is a runner! :two: Still have a couple small leaks to deal with, oil pressure pics cold and then at temp (better find a factory 80lb oil pressure gauge or run around pegged all the time). Did a video for you guys https://youtu.be/UCiSHAY8pDA still needs some fine tuning and a belt tightening but it is in the ball park.

First c10 07-07-2016 10:41 AM

Re: 72 K30 Build

Hey Brett looks good. I thought I would have to get a 80# gauge also. When cold it is pegged. After running a little bite mine is around 40 at idle. So I may not change it. Can you snap a picture of how you wired the tach? Mine is not working.

I am going to check out the videos soon. As I can't get them to play while out in the field.

I think congrat's are in order!! And i like the 50's myself.

7dee2 07-09-2016 09:10 AM

Re: 72 K30 Build

Thanks Scott, currently at temp our oil pressure never falls below 50lbs+. In the pic above the tach is wired coil to HEI tach (w/green spade connector) and fused 12v from battery+ (w/red shielded spade connector) last is a ground from ground stud to battery- (w/green alligator clip not connected in the pic).

Thanks Mike, I'm stoked! We like the 50's as well and they sound great on the K30!

So with the K30 running it is time to give old blue a little face lift. We thought about going for the Large Car, Skull Crusher, Zombie Killer look but that's just a bit to flashy for us. ;) Here are those powder coated wheels from a few posts back and some fresh frame paint.

Ha! You read my mind flashed.

Here’s some before (2014) and all done for now after shots. The story behind this is I wanted an antique/classic insurance policy (agreed value) to avoid being told the truck has no value if we had a bad day. My agent (Anpac Chrome) told me if we’d spruce the truck up a little bit take some pics it would make it easier to get a good valuation on the old girl. We’ve had classic insurance policies in the past and with the K30 getting closer all the time it was time to start moving in that direction again.

As soon as old blue was done taking the insurance close up’s we made another scrap run, yes (hey $50 is $50)! Ran across this old tailgate buried in with the scrap that Mrs. 7dee2 was saving. She wanted a bench made out of it and one guess what happened next?

Thanks Rick that’s me alright, Mr. Skills! Thanks Tom & Scott, you know the bench has only been on the hunnie lets make this to do list for about 5 years.

Decided I need to remove this pipe plug for a factory style temp sender. First attempt twisted my 1/2” to 3/8” impact adaptor immediately dang! Ha, 40+ years in that head and it’s not going without a fight. We could use the one in the intake but I'm thinking we'll need the second one for a fan temp sender.

Thanks guys all good suggestions, probably end up trying all three before we are done!

So the K30 has been running for a few weeks now and I’ve got some nagging overnight leaks that just won’t go away. You’re looking at an engine oil (left) & atf (right) leak, your also probably thinking that’s much of a leak. What you don’t know is that this first pic is after I drained the engine & trans over 24 hours earlier. Third pic is 48 hours later and last pic is 72 hours later prior to mounting to the engine stand and still leaking (how can it do that?) Jeez Lueez!:thud:

I’m most concerned with the engine oil leak because it’s coming from the rear main seal area. At first it only leaked a little overnight but progressively got worse to where it would slowly leak oil while running, not good.

Re: 72 K30 Build

Brett, your engine sounds sweet! The C30 looks great! It is one nice ride. Te bench turned out great too. Sorry to see about the oil leak. I had an oil leak on my engine in my 72 after I finally got it going and fixed it this spring. At least your cab and sheet metal is out of the way and it saved you some time. Hopefully it's an easy quick fix.

Re: 72 K30 Build

I feel your pain! Had my tranny rebuilt and the 205 re gasketed and they still leak, took it back once and they put a new pan gasket on it but still have the same problem, I'm assuming no sealant was used on the gaskets.

Thanks Mike, I decided to run atf in my 205 and that thin weight stuff is asking for leaks for sure! Surprising enough it’s held it pretty well. Fixed one minor leak on the backside at startup and I’ve been watching a second really, really slow leak on the front side. I’ll drain it again and put a little sealer on the offending bolt and cross my fingers that’s it.

Thanks 70stroker, Ryan nailed it with all the sheet metal out of the way saves a lot of time. Mrs. 7dee2 does love her bench I’ve been spoiled ever since!

I’m fairly sure my trans leak is the pan and/or the vacuum modulator it’s dry around the dipstick tube and the cooling lines (fixed them at initial startup). This leak can be accessed fairly easily so shouldn’t be a biggie. We’ll deal with it after the motor is back in place.
