The frame, engine and trans cleaned up real nice......almost ready for paint
How'd you manage to keep those dogs clean and dry at the car wash? |
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
yeah after the clean up, i've been thinking about por-15......dunno.
the plan was to get it sand blasted then paint, but now I don't know..... they didn't like it, but they stayed in the truck the whole time |

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Exactly what I'm doing with my frame, but you know that already. I just have to get the rest of the body of so I can get to it.
Then again Alan's looks really sexy painted. ;) So the car wash didn't have an issue with you rolling in with a frame and engine to clean? They normally have a heart attack when I roll in with my Jeep covered with mud so I could only imagine what they'd think if I brought a frame/engine in. hahaha |

i'm thinking about trying out the Zero-Rust, it is about a third the cost of POR....think I'm still gonna get it all sand blasted first  I didn't ask ;) it wasn't really greasy, mostly just dirt, other than the rear differential. there was an outlaw dirt track racer cleaning his race car there too. I had a couple guys come up and ask "what is it" I told them and they both told me that was the way to do it  |

Progress is progress...Looks dam good!
We were there not too long ago with my woman's '65. Luckily there wasn't too much rust on the chassis, we shot it with Rustoleum semi-gloss black paint...:chevy: |
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
I've had experience with Por-15 before with great results. If prepared correctly it's really durable. You can hit it with a hammer and it doesn't chip. You can paint it with a brush, and dries like you sprayed it on. Like you said it's not cheap. I have to check out Zero-Rust to see if it's as durable. What do you guys know?

that's a good looking frame!! Quote:

I have heard good things about it. |
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
I have a gallon of the black Zero-Rust that I plan to use on the frame. I also bought 6 cans of the red oxide to use in smaller, hard to reach areas so I would have an opposing color to make sure I had good coverage with the black.
If I ever get to the frame, I'll let you know how it turns out. (You'll probably beat me to that point though.) |

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
It looks good, and I like that it comes in colors. I wonder how it will resist road chips compared to Por-15.

Joe, nice progress.:metal: You remember our discussion on the durability of my painted frame? You said your truck will be on some dirt roads if I remember correctly. If your can hit por15 with a hammer and it won't chip, I think I know what my choice would be. Good luck with your decision. |
Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
I'm thinking of painting the frame with the Zero-Rust because it comes in colors, and the suspension parts with the black Por-15. That's what will chip the most. Plus I already have a quart of the Por-15.

i do recall that conversation;) It is my understanding that the Zero-Rust is as durable as POR......dunno Quote:

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
I used the POR15 and it withstood a Bobcat blade without scraping through to the bare metal.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
i used por15 on a 66 short fleet i was working on back in 94.i brushed it on the inner rockers, inside of the rockers before welding them on and inside of the new cab corners.i expect it to outlast me probably, but i sold the truck in 95 and don't know what it looks like now.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Without going on a Sales Pitch for Por15. My plan was to paint anything and everything under the truck that is subject to boucing rocks and road salt. As well the bottoms of the cab, inner fender/exterior fender, bed supports and frame. I'm sure Rust Bullet and all the others would work as well, but thats my plan for now. ;)
I didn't take pictures, but when I tried to bend the hairs on a brush after it sat over night the handle snapped on the brush before I could bend a brissel. Keep in mind the temp was 70 or so degrees so it had a good chance to harden. It would take longer to harden if it was cooler. I've never powder coated or sprayed automotive paint so I don't know if I would of had the same result. :smoke: Just don't get that stuff on you. It does not come off easily. |

That would make a cool custom Ice Cream Truck. Something like this one. But more hot rod type not low rider.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
I called Zero Rust today. They won't even sell to me because I live in California. He told me it is like Por-15 and is chip resistant, and can be painted on with a brush. You must prepare it correctly, and it needs 2 coats. I tried to order it through the web site, and it went through. The web site said nothing about California not being able to order it. I paid through Pay Pal. We'll see what happens???

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build
Hey Joe, great build glad to see you are coming along quite well on your truck. Its real neat to see that your wife and family are behind you on this. I've waited a long time to be able to build my truck and my wife is very understanding but she is going to leave it all to me. I never have been able to see the cab in Noble you saw but one day soon I hope, I did go and look at the cab I have been wanting for about 6-7 years now, (the one I was telling you about bbg and factory air), it has a long bed and excellent tailgate with cab and doors probably will need some floor work and maybe rockers but other than that its great with great glass will possibly buy it real soon ($300). I picked up a couple of good doors and front bed panel at Shawnee swap meet, the doors have been worked already and don't need much work. I wanted to let you know that I visited the Topps Powder Coating shop in Moore and talked to the owner and he told me he could do a bare frame for around $350 and I ask him about other components like "A" frames and crossmembers and tranny crossmember and he said $150. He has the capacity to do something I think he said up to 80' long. I was very impressed and the quality of some work I saw was real good. I didn't know if you were set on the place in Edmond or not just letting you know of a closer place. SEE YA SOON:chevy:

On the California regulations thing, I have the same problem with painting the inside of my boat every year. It’s a primer that "breathes", loves salt water, is tough as nails, gasses out like you wouldn’t believe and, of course - actually works. When I order this stuff on the web I have it sent to a friend's house in Phoenix and they just UPS (ground) it to me. An extra few days, but worth it - as the California approved version of this product is not worth the value of the can it comes in. Just say’in. Mac. :chevy: |
