Goldmine Number 2?
I just acquired this photo taken February 8th 1960. Fleet of new GMCs leaving the GMC Truck & Coach Division in Pontiac Michigan heading to dealership across the country. Would love to have been driving one of those tow rigs!:gmc2:

Very cool photo, guy on the left looks like a cross between Fred Mertz from I love Lucy! & Broderic Crawford from Highway Patrol, 10-4? Think the salesman has his work cut out for him.

Can you imagine how much it took to get rigs off the lines back then? No loading and staging yards just out of the shop and closing down streets and convoying out across the country. By the way, great find and love the two cracker box trucks in that one.

I can't imagine what it would have taken to just work out the logistics involved with planning this type of convoy. I guess this was and maybe still is the best way to tow cab & chassis style trucks via piggy back. You can see the lead 3500 GMC truck has a set of wheels with hubcaps attached strapped on the chassis behind the cab which I assume belong to the first truck behind it. I cropped the photo to zoom in on the back ground and you can actually see there is a traditional car (or in this case truck) carrier hauling 4 stepside trucks. Think there may be a suburban in the middle of the pack too just to the left of the right side cracker box rig. The more I study the photo the more trucks I see!

I didn't notice that either until you pointed it out.

My office was in Pontiac for about 10 years but I'm not recognizing that building.

Medium Duty trucks were built on South Blvd; those building are now all gone. The Fleet garage was at the north end of the loop (just north of Woodward) and is still standing in use as a construction/roofing company.

I'll have to drive by on the way home and see if I can nail the location based on some of the other houses in the background.

Very cool!! My truck may be one of the ones in the picture! Probably not, but could be! LOL It was #46 built in 1960 in Pontiac.

Murphy98, did you have to resize that pic to post it? If so would you be able to send me the original file if I PM you my email address?

Thanks Chevy_man5, that would be awesome if you truck was in the photo! I did resize it a good bit, think the original scan of the photo is around 3MB. PM me your email, I'll be happy to send you the larger file size. It does enlarge very well in any JPEG software you use so you may be able to see more details in the photo.

Wow, that's very cool Keith! Love to get more info on some of these old photos from people who know the area! Here is what is typed on the back of the photo which is where I got the info from. I tried to zoom in on the name & address on the building but can't make out the letters or numbers even using a magnifying glass, my eyes are not a good as they used to be:lol: I still can't make out anything readable. Maybe a Google Maps street view of the area today might help?

I think I've said it before but I'll say it again, this is the best thread!! Great pics 1963c-10. Is that GMC sign attached to the roof of that Van being loaded? Very cool shot.

Yeah....there is another pic I'm trying to find in color with them all stacked up. I'm looking for it now.

Thank you for posting the additional info; unfortunately nothing helpful shown on the backside there.

Here's the back of a comparable Pontiac promotional shot, showing the photo number, agency and other legal constraints.

Its amazing how much difference the color makes. The van looks two tone in the b&w pics.

And wonder why a van on top and not a 1/2 ton truck?

Re: Nostalgia - Pics in Time.

Great pic, I've seen it before but always thought the GMC sign was just in the background with the post hidden by the trucks. I'm with you, I thought the van had a two tone paint job too. If you look at the colour photo the middle yellow band does look a bit darker than the main body.

It is now urban prarie.

(a vacant lot with the cement flooring remaining).

In all seriousness - I used to continue to do my vehicle swaps in Pontiac after we had moved to the Tech Center in Warren.

I actually got lost and missed my turn because they had torn my landmarks down. This was after working on South Blvd for about 10 years.

The Suburban pic was taken at the GM Tech Center in Warren Michigan.

(the mushroom shaped lighting by the street is quite distinctive).
