Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I broke mine today. Something in the rear end let go. I'm going to trailer it home from work on Friday to assess the damage. It was a wonderful way to start my morning... :censored:

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Started blasting the intake and got all the steel needed to make the flatbed.
Now, I just need to weld it up and then decide on which species of wood. I am using pine temporarily to align everything and get spacing. Right now, I am leaning towards spalted maple with a clear coat or ash stained yellow to match the color the cab will be. The big hardwood supplier here closed down so I will have to have whatever I use custom cut. That means $$$. :( Steven |

Interesting, this thread has been going on for a few years. I'll jump in.
Started on my 71 GMC stepside today, got the pass side drip rail off for replacement. Some minor rust on pass side. |

I took an 8" long 2" thick door slab and made a "bench top" out of that and then welded up some brackets and clamps and made a jig that is bolted to to the top to hold the bedsides while I cut, weld and work on them to make short bedsides out of all of them. (4 sides) I have 5 trucks to build, 3 short beds and 2 long. The cheapest shortbed i have found is $300 and it is a rusted, twisted piece of crap. (no bed rails) I wouldn't give the guy $50 for it. Best deal I have come across for 60-66 parts was at an estate sale where I found a core support, a right and a left fender that were all in old faded GM boxes. I paid $50 for all 3 pieces. :5150: |
Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Received my shipment from CPP today. (only took 2 weeks to ship) Two boxes got lost and still on there way. Got 2.5" drop spindles, 1" front drop springs, cross drilled rotors, bearing and seal kit for rotors, CPP powder coated calipers, rear trac bar for the new 9" I'm putting together with disk brakes, shocks all four corners, rear sway bar, trailing arm bushings, rear spring hold down brackets for the 4" drop coils and cab mounts. I feel a cold coming on fast and might have to call of work tomorrow.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Went to the Falls TX. and got my drive shaft shortened.
Installed it when I got home. Connected the trans cooler lines. Also received my JEG's order today; Edelbrock carb brackets for the 700r4 TV cable. Just like everything else, they are going to work with some modifications for my liking, but at this point I am used to buying stuff and having to modify/change it. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Installed the 4" drop rear coils. Need to install the front drop components now.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Picked up grade 8 bolts for the motor mounts today. DANG! Those things have gone through the roof. Not a huge purchase, but still...
Hopefully, test fitting the motor and trans this weekend so I can build a cross member. The PO used a piece of angle iron that was not even bolted in, just laying there! Steven |
Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I towed the truck home from my office today and popped the rear diff cover. Found a bunch of metal and not enough oil. Went online and found a good rear end out of a '78 for $200 complete from drum to drum and a 3.73 gear, plus he loaded it.

That don't look good at all. At least you found another rear end and will be going in no time. Posted via Mobile Device |

Man did you chew that diff up, good score on the other diff.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Well I got the 700r4 filled up and drive her around a bit, but as MY luck would only have it I am still hearing noise. I am thinking now it has to be the rear end! I hear it when I get out of the gas and slowing (stopping etc...) then when I get back in the gas it goes away, or I just can't hear it... I have run it up on stands and spun the tires by hand and can hear a thing. I had a 77 with kind of the same issue, no noise with out load on it. I replaced the rear end on it and every thing is fine now, so I am thinking of the same action on Sally...
Maybe get a covertiom kit and use a newer rear end... Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Finishing up the passengers side 2.5" drop spindle, 1" drop coil and new brake hardware.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I'll try and get some up but if you look at my profile you will see it

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Had to put the passenger tire on and drop the jack. Maybe could have gone with a 2" drop coil instead of the 1" with the 2.5" drop spindle. I'll see after I get both sides done and drive it awhile.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Took it out for its first drive that wasn't a kind of shakedown run and had a rear wheel bearing blowout completely and lock up the right rear wheel. Spent about 5 hours running to parts stores and working on it. 3 bearings later, none fit right. Luckily it was only about 3 blocks from the house and was able to get tools I needed easily. Had to knock on a neighbor's door and ask to plug my extension cord into their house in order to grind off the bearing remnants. In the end, had to order one that won't be here for 2 days. Put it back together without the inner bearing and limped it home where it will sit for a few days. Luckily, this didn't happen yesterday on the highway when I was going 65 mph or that I didn't have my daughter with me, cuz she was supposed to learn how to drive a manual today.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Well I spent most of the day online trying to be frugal looking for a used 2011 6.2 Ltr supercharged LSA altenator bracket.... altenator...and a tailshaft for a 6L90E. Just wanted to make sure I could get the bracket and altenator to clear the frame rail on my 66 before I bought a new dealer setup and then find out I have to make something. I guess at some point you just have to jump into the deep end and sink or swim....lol

FInally Finally got the rear sitting where I want to, no not mine my truck's...
Moved up the hangers and put on a set of 2" shackles, thinking that would get her low enough after notching frame....Ahhhh Nope:uhmk: So after much debate about moving hangers again and decided against it, Bought a set of U bolts and 2" block from Autozone to get er' low. The pic with the stepper is where it sat originally.... Im considering taking off one of the "donuts" , made up of two "donuts sitting on one another with a metal tube in the middle, from the cab mounts to get it sitting lower.....What do y'all think? Would it be rougher ride? Great work fellas:ito: |
