Re: Whose on Steelies? Post 'em up!

My 2wd 70 gmc has the original 15" stock steelies which i plan on reusng after a frame off. Measuring best I can with tire on pulling a wire through the rim the wheel appears to be 7" wide. Does this sound right or should it be a 15"x8" which people seem to describe as stock? I'm trying to figure the largest (tallest) tire i can put on my wheel with stock height. Thanks in advance.

I thought that I had posted on this thread, but after reading front to back I realized that I hadn't. Lots of nice pickups here and I love the steelie look. The last picture is me, so you could say that I grew up with the steelie look....

366c20: looks like based on your tire size you've got a 33" tire in the well. Good info to know. Thanks for sharing.

Since i can get up to that size under the truck with stock suspension, i could wrap my wheels with a 33x10.5r15 if the rims are 8" wide. However, if their 7" i'm gonna be limited by the width (maybe a 33x9.5r15? - really narrow). Can anybody confirm the stock width 7" or 8"?

Re : Stock Rim Width

I have the original 15" 6 lug wheels from a 1969 C/10 that was ordered with HD suspension & brakes but a 250 CID L6 three speed tranny and heavy duty clutch ~ they are 7" wide .

Maybe the 8" wide rims were for Camper Specials ? .

thanks. That confirms my suspicions.

Re: Whose on Steelies? Post 'em up!

I believe most stock 15" wheels are 5 1/2"-6". I believe the 7" wheels were on later K-models. There were never any 8 x 15 wheels offered on these trucks. The wider option was 8.25 x 16.5 and I've only seen that on K-models

My rims are 6.5" wide. I'm not sure a wider tire would work in a 33". So far I have had no rubbing with the narrow tire.

If you go with BFG All-Terrain T/A's you could probably go with a 33x10.50.

I have 31x10.50's on 8" wheels and they seem to run a little narrower than a 10.50 should.

I see no problem with putting them on a 6 or 7 inch wheel.

I can get a pic for you if you'd like.

15x5.5's in front and 15x8's in the rear... for now anyways. I have a pair of 8's for the front that I will be swapping in soon...

I have the same wheel tire combo, with a 4in lift. Yours looks awesome. What is your lift height?

Reason for the concern is running too wide of a tire on such a narrow wheel but still wanting something to fill the wheel well. From BFG website comparing rim widths of 9.5 to 10.5 tires (BFG ATs):
33x9.50R15/C rim width:6.5" - 8.5" diameter:32.7
33x10.50R15/C rim width:7" - 9" diameter:32.7
Last thing i want heading down the road is the tire to come off the wheel due to incorrect pairing of rim and tire.

Thanks, I like it toohttp://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/i...es/biggrin.gif. 4.25" front lift (4" springs and 1/2" longer shackles) with 7-8" of rear lift (4" shackle flip, 1" Zero-Rates, 2" longer shackles and 1-2" AAL springs). Sits just about even on flat ground.
