Got my American Autowire Classic Update Series Harness yesterday. This is one of the coolest things I have bought for the truck. If you add up all the original wiring harnesses for these trucks they come out to around $700 or so. This kit was $540, but I saved 20% on it so came out to $430. Plus all the extras that come with it are amazing. A ton of new switches, plus all the upgrades you can add that the original doesn't have. It even came with a new ignition barrel and keys! Truly impressed with American Autowire. Now to spend the next couple of nights reading over all the instructions. The only downside is you need to rent or buy their special crimping tool. Or you can solder the terminals on. Not sure yet what I am going to do. https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8785/1...47d24066_b.jpg20150508_152019 by bjohnson388, on Flickr |

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Bret have you got a picture of there tool as I use a crimping tool every day at work and it only cost about £20 or $30 . But I still solder some of the joints by putting a drop of solder on as well . But thats me being extra cautious because of the nature of my job .

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Martin this is from their website. Not that much to rent but you only get it for 30 days.
From their website American Autowire is currently offering a pair of Delphi Packard Electric “F” type terminal crimping tools for a nominal fee of $25.00 each…the single crimp tool and the double crimp tool. Upon ordering either rental tool, your credit card will be charged a $79.00 deposit per tool plus shipping charges. The rental agreement is for a 30 day period and starts upon the arrival of the tool. American Autowire will use the UPS tracking number for verification of arrival. Link http://www.americanautowire.com/prod...rimping-tools/ I put it into Amazon and it comes up with this. It seems the $79 from Ameican Autowire is cheaper. Basically you get a 10 day grace period after the 30 days and if it is not return you pay for it. I don't mind buying just not sure I would ever get that much use out of it after the |
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Nice tools mine is for insulated crimps . If you can get a tool for a good price I would by it you can never have to many tools . Even when the truck is finished I bet if you give it some time it won't be long before you are restoring or building something else .

So today I covered the firewall with Peal n Seal. Then I installed the inner fenders. Next I installed the fuse box with the custom mounting plate in the kit that bolts to longer upper inner fender bolts they supply in the kit. Pretty trick. I had to file the holes on the plate just a tad to make it go on both bolts but it came out great. Next I put the core support and battery tray. The wife snapped some pretty cool shots of the boys helping and hanging out. https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7759/1...98bd3363_b.jpg20150510_153643 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8710/1...1d5f3fac_b.jpg20150510_153709 by bjohnson388, on Flickr The kit came with these cool insulated clips that mount in the factory holes. https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7782/1...8283cd33_b.jpg20150510_153700 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5443/1...b5d6bc2b_b.jpg20150510_153726 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7779/1...51995eb5_b.jpg20150510_160228 by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7724/1...85364e70_b.jpg20150510_160239 by bjohnson388, on Flickr Cool shots the wife took https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7777/1...6cccc2e9_b.jpg11206018_10204302412261306_5664682619701389829_n by bjohnson388, on Flickr Youngest helping put the core support bolt on. https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8700/1...f42f8366_b.jpg11151057_10204302412781319_4651411636733560669_n by bjohnson388, on Flickr https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7735/1...1a0ef59a_b.jpg10982844_10204302412421310_4732517005278968044_n by bjohnson388, on Flickr This shot is freaking awesome! https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5324/1...0d207ddd_b.jpg11263130_10204302413461336_1613154913897313992_n by bjohnson388, on Flickr |

JUST WoW !
Those photos really bring it all together Bret. Well done to you and the family. |
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Looking really good Bret . Getting the boys trained will pay off later . I learnt so much from my dad when I used to help him as a boy . As I'm sure you did
|
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
That is way cool your boys helping you. Wish I could have afforded it back then. Its a good way to get them interested in our Habit.......I mean in maintenance...!

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Looking good Bret! Mine would have gone a lot faster if I had all that help. It doesn't look that hard just hard to get to. Perfect time with nothing in the cab. I pieced mine together and I am down to the under dash harness and all are replaced. I guess I'll do it when I get the vintage air system. What crimper are you looking for? I might have it.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Truck is looking good! And what memories you and the boys will share for a life time. Priceless

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Bret
Here is a few links to a crimper that I use. I was in the wiring department at a previous company I worked at, while the tools AAW had to rent are the premium hand crimp tools, these can be used with very good results. I have a set and have done a few cars with them and they work well. For terminals with the crimp on the wire and one on the insulation, it requires you to do them separately, but does a good job. You have to decide which "slot" to use for the wire size you are doing, but that is no big deal. I have bought from Waytek before and they are a good company. There are other places to get them too. http://www.waytekwire.com/item/419/T...EL-CRIMP-TOOL/ http://terminalsupplyco.com/Store/Pr...?pc=OBT-1028CT http://crimpsupply.com/packard-delph...pack-tool.html |

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
That really, really looks good!! Have fun with the wiring. Just take your time and take brakes when you feel like it is never going to end. That way you won't get burnt out or make mistakes. By the way did I tell you that it is really look'in good.
