I have been wanting to check your thread out for a while, and after looking at it I am asking myself why I waited so long! This truck is definitely cool, and will be even cooler when it is done!

Thanks kehster I appreciate it. It has been a long time coming but I am making progress now. Was able to get the rear sway bar mounted tonight .

Larry,

I agree that looks tight man, I think I would definitely put a small bolt in notch at the very least.

Okay, okay I ordered one this morning but now I just went over budget !!! I had my budget build all planned out and it just busted over a c-notch :smoke:

So THIS must have come in on a different budget? :)

Tool budget versus parts budget?

Looks like you got a nice impact there and it has been taken care of.

Re: 68 project

My dad has a few of those mac impacts, they work well. Just make sure you lube them VERY well or they start losing power and get really dirty VERY fast

Re: 68 project

I was going to ask about the c-notch when I saw your photos but clearly everyone else had the same question! So I'll come at it from the other perspective, do you really need the notch? I assume you figured you didn't if you hadn't put one in at first, but now I'm really wondering. I will have 4" springs and 2" blocks on the back of my truck which will give me a few more inches of clearance from what you have here, and I'm wondering if I need one. I don't have a notch worked into my immediate budget and I don't want to blow the budget on a notch either  Oh, and the truck's looking really nice!

Just to calm you guys' nerves AND to maybe not cut into your wallets so bad-there may be another option for you. The attached picture is how the folks that C notched my frame YEARS AGO did it. And this had been in there since the 70s! I am guessing that a foot of pipe wouldn't hurt too bad and the integrity of the frame had always worked for me. I even hauled about 20 landscape blocks in it once! :)

Re: 68 project

You are definitely making progress. You may or may not need a notch. But adding one can't hurt.

Re: 68 project

I hope everyone knows I was joking over breaking the budget, can you build one to this extent on a true budget ?
I have the two pieces of frame section I cut off the backside of the 8 foot bed frame I used on mine and thought about welding those in for the notch, I think they would work fine.

You can try to be frugal but I agree I keep day dreaming of doing different things.. and if you get what you pay for you don't want to be cheap. I'm debating on my interior and whether or not to re-do bench seat or...it could mean a thousand bucks right there depending on what I decide. ?"68 Project" sounds like it could go on and on...

I've started referring to my build as "the wife's new kitchen." She doesn't see the same humor in that as I do. My heads are finally ready to be picked up. That's good news. The bad news is I have to bring a grand with me to pay the balance owed. :waah:

Your build continues to keep everyone on their toes Larry. Looks great.

Well it is down to the essentials, the top end is tore down tomorrow it goes to the stand to remove the pistons and crank then off to the machine shop to be cleaned and balanced and blueprinted. I was unsure of the validity of the previous owner saying it was rebuilt but it is obviously very clean and the pistons are .030. We will see where this goes from here with the build .

I don't know what kind of power you are looking for Larry, but I still have my long block from my last build. The heads are the blah originals that came on the truck but they are completely rebuilt with new guides, valves, hardened seats, comp cam springs and roller rockers. You can buy these cheaper than have an old set rebuilt.

Crank is fresh, new pistons, comp cam timing set, cam, lifters etc. I would be surprised if I had a thousand miles on any of it. Just got bored and wanted more.

All I want to keep is my original numbers matching block.

Thanks I will let you know, I am buying a set of preassembled heads, probably edelbrock. I will be reusing the new pistons that are in it and going with a Holley sniper efi setup :chevy:

I think those edelbrock e-street setups make pretty good power when you get the matched sets. You should be all set.

Worked on getting motor and tranny out yesterday motor is on the stand and ready for bottom end to come out. Frame looks bare now. Lol. Also fitted the cab on k10 to make sure everything is clearing well, few minor adjustments but all is well.

Pretty straight forward, I used 5/16 serrated head bolts, 1 1/2" washers, 5/16thrubber washers btween bolt and tank and between tank and frame screwed into a5/16th extruded u-nut. If I ever have an issue I can pull the tank from the bottom without removing bed or bumper.

Had a good day but was a bit disappointed to find out the 350 was only a 2 bolt main :waah: not sure which way I will go now :smoke:

Oregon 1967 GMC 04-23-2017 07:38 PM

Re: 68 project

personal preference of course. I think a 2 bolt main block would be just fine. Of course my small block 400 is a two bolt. Don't know how far up the power grid you're going..It looks great, love the meaty rear end.
if you have a second check this out.
http://www.badasscars.com/index.cfm/...d=83/prd83.htm

So for a basic performance engine making 400 HP or so, do you really need to build it on a 4 bolt main block? The answer is; not really. Think of it like this, ALL of the early Vette 327's with 365 and 375 HP were 2 bolt main blocks. There was no such thing as a 4 bolt main 327. How about the infamous 68 "MO" 302 Z/28's which were famous for 8,000 RPM shifts in stock trim! They came stock with 11.25:1 compression and were indeed high winders that saw race track use quite often, and they were also 2 bolt main blocks!
