Hahaha, my thoughts exactly! Thanks guys!!

Well, I moved on from the wiring, figuring I'd have better luck sorting through it with the engine/trans out of the truck.

This weekend I started on fixing the firewall. Was pulling a dent I found when the stud pulled the sheet metal apart. :waah: Ground off the paint and bedliner/undercoating crap to find some pinholes. Cut it out and made a patch, which lead to blow outs. I hate thin sheet metal and rust!!!

Well, I ended up with this.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pstw5fyjqd.jpg

And got it all finished up here
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psxht5ndns.jpg

I guess GM never meant for these panels to be flat, so the entire blower motor area is low, which is why the welds still show up. I didn't want to grind through any metal, so I'll have to try and work the steel as best I can. Thankfully I'll be making a panel to cover most of this anyway. Heck, it might have been easier to replace the full face of the firewall in this area, maybe even this section of the cowl too.

Nice work on the firewall repair and filler. Do you have a plan for the other openings? I know I made the mistake of cutting the whole section out and cutting a one piece filler plate. (HERE) Not a good idea in my opinion. On my next one, I will leave the rolled edges and just make two filler pieces. I had a ton of oil canning issues with the one piece. I've seen the ones made by porterbuilt, they should be better because it has a rolled edge.
I hate repairing the rust in this area. It can be a real pain to get rid of it all.
good luck!

Thanks Mike. Yeah, I plan on leaving everything the way it is and just making patches for the two large openings, and maybe some small round ones for the bigger holes near it. I want to try and get the Vintage Air brackets figured out first, since I want to get rid of the bolts on the engine side of the firewall. The openings will make it easier to get to both sides with a copper spoon for welding holes shut. I appreciate you sharing your experience though. I'm sure you may have saved me a headache or three if I decided to cut it out later.

It's been a while, so it's time for an update. I've been tackling the firewall when I can (so it's slow going), but progress has been made. Here's what I have so far.
I got all the small holes welded in, then I did the drivers side a/c & heater hole...
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psca24alq7.jpg

Filled in the large round hole and final a/c & heater hole. I also started the passenger side firewall radius to match the drivers side.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psdfpqsko1.jpg

And on Sunday, I used a scrap piece of 12"x12" wood with a rounded corner to hammer the rolled edge to a better (smoother) form.

Thanks Ryan! I've seen several done like this and just knew that I had to do it when I got to this point. I think it will be worth the effort.

I really need to move that fuel line out of my way. After seeing it in these pictures, I'm a bit surprised I haven't put it back down by the frame rails yet.

Thanks Vic! It's taking me longer than I'd like, but it's coming along.

Well, I didn't take final pics of the passenger side, but here is one of the drivers side and another of the passenger side with the A/C fittings mocked up.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psufxozjzd.jpg

I've started sanding down the rest of the firewall and will be filling in some unnecessary extra holes, relocating some others for some wiring to hide a little better, and start body work. Hopefully I'll get it ready for paint around Thanksgiving.

Oh, and my wire harness should be here tomorrow!!! :metal:

Thanks guys!

I went out to the garage last night to keep plugging holes, got two done, but noticed it was welding really strange. It took me until the 2nd hole was filled to check my gas level... it was empty, again! Now I know I don't weld often, but that tank sure seemed to go empty rather quickly.

So, no more progress with the welds, but I did take a picture of the passenger side finished.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psr977wq4d.jpg

And...

MY HARNESS CAME IN!!!
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pswpgfzc4n.jpg

Now I just need to finish the firewall, get it off to paint and I can start cutting it down and building my own stand alone harness! :metal:

That happened last time! Luckily, it wasn't the weekend this time, but still when the welding supply place was closed. Got my refill today at lunch though, so welding continues tonight! As for the harness, it's a factory piece. Since mine was damaged in shipping, the seller sourced a brand new one. Apparently, the factory harness that came with my engine wasn't available anymore, so it had to be built. We had to wait for GM to commission this harness for the 2017 vans in order to get one. I'm now at "ground zero" where I should have been when I received my engine back in July.

More progress... the metal work is almost complete!

Started with these holes
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pskggbxbem.jpg

made a plug
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psehemb3nt.jpg

two holes down, square plug set in place
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psoovxvkuf.jpg

end result (keeping rear body harness hole since I wired the truck already)
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps603xzdvo.jpg

Clutch hole before
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pshbrd9ss2.jpg

and after
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psdn0g3erb.jpg

started stripping the undercoating/bedliner crap and surface rust that was hiding under it
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psh1pz75wv.jpg

Final product, with some rust converter on the drivers side. Just to keep it at bay. Once I'm ready to cut out and replace the fuse block butcher job, I'll sand it all off again and start filler work.

The last piece of the firewall... The butchered fuse block hole... old overlayed onto new.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

Apparently I've forgotten to update this thread for a little while. Time to remedy that...

Metal work finished, rolled it outside to blow it all of and give it a good grease and wax remover clean up.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psx1sdeeoa.jpg

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psmy4h7xeh.jpg

I then started with some filler...
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pszxtcgscd.jpg
First coat done and sanded...
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psxxkbhjz5.jpg

After a little more filler, it was time to do a polyester filler (final filler).
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pso0mnootk.jpg

I've almost got it finished, but still some sanding and a couple touch up spots to hit again... more pictures later.

knomadd 12-07-2016 11:11 AM

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

Got a bit more done last night. Hopefully this is the last time I'm putting on more filler...
