We had them in my unit, prone to tranny housing cracks with extreme use. Complicated enough we were not allowed to do more than routine maintenance at field battery level.

It’s been over four decades, but I was assigned to a Field Artillery Battery & there was some of these critters around. Thought they were going to be cool, found out different :waah:

We did not have them in our Field Communications (wire) squad, others had them in the Fire Control Observation squad, I know they did not enjoy them. Seems to me there were concerns with the Articulated section (electrical connections & possibly steering link failure…)

Well it was old metal not new fiberglass and it was a 4x4 so it sort of counts. I think?

I've really enjoyed looking through this thread! Here's mine. It's a '65 International harvester 1 Ton. Has a Dana 70 in the front and a IH axle in the back and is currently sitting on 38.5 tires. I am slowly restoring it as I use it to haul firewood and such. Currently has a 304 V8 but I would love to have a diesel in it some day. :metal:

It's a 1951 GMC with a 74 3/4 blazer chasis. 38.5 boggers, 4.10 gears, 350ci, sm465, np205, 6 inch lift.

The rear is a RA-15. I know this is what IH put in them from the factory, but I'm not sure if they manufactured their own, or had it made by someone else. The 4.88 provide lots of oomph with the big tires, but the four speed transmission limits me to ~50 mph.

I've been following your Cummins Longhorn build. Love the compounds and look forward to seeing it finished up! :metal:

The IH Corporate RA rears are brutes. If I remember right, they manufactured their own. There is also a 4.30 pig (as well as 5.57, 6.17 and 6.72) available for them...changing gears is hardr, because the ring is RIVETED to the carrier.

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes

That's one fine example of a Renegade! Better than factory, yet very original looking, and certainly reminiscent of all those I recall from those great old days! My best friend's first 4wd was a gold-ish green-ish '73. I remember the tires were really aggressive and called "Mud Wompers" and he liked to womp the mud . That one would probably not have made a good candidate for a restoration
