Re: Whose on Steelies? Post 'em up!

17x8 w/255-60's on the front and 17x9.5 w/275-60's on the rear. I have 4.5" BS front and 5" BS rear. I have 2.5" drop spindles and 1" springs up front and air bags in the rear simulating a 5" spring drop.

I also used the wider 70-72 housing so that I could use the 5" BS instead of 4.5" (common BS for the 1.5" narrower 67-69 housing). I did this for looks to keep my hubcaps from being to far inset.

Hope this helps.

Yes it does. Thanks.

One other question, pls. The wheels are from where? 5 lug? I thought they were Wheel Vintiques, but I tried looking but no luck. Pls point me to the right direction. Thanks again.

Re: Whose on Steelies? Post 'em up!

They are 6 lug. I started with factory 16" Kelsey hays wheels that came on my pickup when new. The centers were riveted so I removed the rivets. Stockton Wheel put them in 17" hoops. I could have had a nice set of custom wheels for what the wheels and caps cost me in the end, but for me that wasn't the point.;)

PM me if you have any other questions, so I don't hijack this thread anymore then I already have. Thanks!

I think the ratio of actual steelies so far is like 30%. :truck:

One more hijack(my first...heh heh). You do have custom wheels! They just ain't flashy custom wheels. I've run steelies for many years and going this route has never been cheaper. Even off the shelf wide steel OEM-center wheels ran about $75 a piece back when I could get aluminum slots for about $100. Then, you blast and powder coat, then find N.O.S. hubcaps (or just off the shelf O.E.M. 30 years ago and you had more in them. Back then I wondered why everybody bought chrome spokes or alloy wheels that are dated in ten years when wide steelies are timeless and classy. I always figured guys wanted some flash for their money. I like the subtle change and the look that it's just the means required to run larger tires w/o trying to be showy. I built a pro-street truck years ago with steelies and hubcaps. To many it looked stock from the side and that's just the look I wanted.

I appreciate your input .

This is my 69, it had a set of 22' bling rims on it when i got it and couldn't get them off fast enough! Unfortunately steel rims to suit are a bit tough to find here in Aus, but i was able to get a set of 60 something rims off a Buick.

Hey,we're all here to have fun. I don't want to spoil the party or come across like Professor Trucksworth or anything. But,those of us who've been around a while learned what we know from those before us when we were fresh into things, and if the word doesn't get passed down then it gets lost. I don't care what wheels anyone shows as long as they know what it is. Many threads get started asking to see a particular thing and there ends up with "not exactly what you asked for,but..." It's all good.
Basically, the rules changed from tradition in '88 with trucks to where there is no standard for wheels. Everything is styled steel or styled alloy.
First to last...
*Traditional OEM type or "steelie",accepts hubcaps
*Rallye,accepts center cap
*88+ styled steel, accepts center cap. Crossover from steelie to rallye/styled steel.
*99+ styled steel,accepts center cap

i do agree with what your saying, but where would the 88-98 SS/Sport wheel lie? wouldn't it be considered the "Styled" wheel for 88-98 and the wheel you posted be considered the "steelie" (I know its confusing)

they were available, in Chrome, Silver and black (Painted)

Nice trucks! Both past and present.

I'd say you're right. The sport wheels are styled steel wheels (also). GM used "Styled Steel" as the name of the standard wheels, but it's really the generic description of those as well as others to follow. It seems "Steelies" became a thing of the past after the '91 R/V series. Now everything is some sort of styled steel or alloy.
