Re: What did you do to your truck today.The 3rd chapter
yesterday, finished the new bed install in the ochre longhorn..
took about a week start to finish, what a heap of work! Mar-K longhorn pine board kit, non-polished SS strips and bolt kit, rubber pads.. Jamestown Distributors Total Boat products; 2 coats deep penetrating epoxy, first 25% acetone 6 coats Gleam gloss spar varnish.. brushed, rolled, sanded, repeat, repeat....... wire wheeled, primed and painted cross members for the new wood.. anti-seized everything and all hand assembled and hand tightened with ratchet.. all done on the truck, bed lifted up on blocks by hand where required.. mom helped a bunch! quality control, held bolts down while I started hardware, etc. I'll save all the details for another thread but turned out fairly decent I think.. now everyone is afraid to put anything in it :lol: ochre 71 longhorn done, red 71 longhorn and 65 C20 to go :waah: https://dl.dropbox.com/s/vkv8i3fwz83...15406.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/ngrfind0c3q...16962.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/f3g20w49l7s...18342.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/486seksij5z...21709.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/2pdv9laooc7...19203.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/8avb8ss5fml...19900.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/l8l9d44gekc...22431.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/fa2511mbebh...23675.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/itj35rn0zif...24267.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/x76a6hyytw1...24532.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/r60dtsq7uve...24837.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/gui9z1rrthf...25100.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/2gl2ybsne77...25308.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/frsnngf9b1v...25521.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/cah8kotd138...45262.jpg?dl=0 |

Replaced broken side mirror.CAUTION Work truck pictures ahead;
I was trying to tighten the mount and the stud broke at about 60 Ft.Lbs and almost broke my nose- did break my shades. This is the original mirror from the 60s I'm sure. The curved piece is SOLID steel with the ends turned down and threaded. Here is a picture of the original compared to the cheapo aftermarket replacement that did NOT hold the mirror in place at speed because the threaded insert was not staked in the tube. So I went to the local pick-your-part expecting to walk for miles but right there at the entrance was a nice 1978 with it's mirrors intact. Different style but at least it stays put in the wind. Added a spot mirror to the bottom. -BA |

A couple minor accomplishments over the weekend.
After a few days of soaking all the lines and nuts I got the mater cylinder and distribution block removed. Soaking all the bleeders and line connections at the wheels so I can hopefully blow out the lines before I install the new master. Sunday I thought I would quickly strip and prime one of the bed steps only do discover the finish goes in this order: clear, olive green metallic, mint green metallic, and primer. The greens and clear were laid on thick. After much sanding, blasting, and a bit of swearing I did get a quick coat of primer on the bare metal. Gotta come up with a better plan for the rest of the bed. |

Well I was thumbing thru many threads of these trucks running rough and found that the HEI trucks are gapper at 45. My truck had auto lite platinum gapped at 35 from PO that still looked new and clean. Swapped out with a.c. Delco 43s gapped at 45. Wow. Runs so smooth now. Even starts better.

More bed work. Starting to take the old wood bed out. Wouldn’t be so bad but some PO decided tongue and grove wood with a crap pot full of carriage bolts was the answer. And drill holes in all the cross sills for the bolts. Hope the sills aren’t trash when I get this out.
Also started straightening, stripping, and painting the rear fender braces. I’ll have two good sets for my project with at least one set left over. Still have a couple to take off the drivers side fender. |

1970 CST truck. The bed was really ugly and had a bunch of different colors of paint. Previous owner used the truck to haul house paint. Today my wife and I are applying Herculiner bed paint. Got the first coat on and it looks great, Gonna do the second coat in about an hour.

I couldn't be happier. Three guys showed up this morning, we mounted the cab, and then the primary paint dude and I spent the next 12 hours building the body today. I'm real impressed with this guy, he led most of the day.
We have a few minor adjustments left, but basically got her done. I finished the day torquing the body mounts to minimum. and that didn't change a thing, we're square and level too. Next up are the inner fenders, mount the bed, and mark for all the moldings. Then we blast her apart for paint:chevy: There are going to be three guys working on the body and paint. My buddy, his brother and friend. They all work at the same shop. I suspect I may actually be done last next year or early the next:lol: 7-8 years I think:metal: Couple pics from today. And yeah Grumps you were right. All those body measurements I took before I tore the truck down was a wasted effort:lol::lol::waah: |

Worked on building a cab cart that will also tilt forward for access to roof and floor bottom when needed. Cart will also have another extension off the back so it will hold a bed. The mounts are sleeved and will have clevis pins for raising and lowering if needed. In the future I will design a few other attachments that will sleeve in so I can mount a fenders, bedside, hood, etc for painting or body work.

Been searching forever to find an original tach cluster for my '69 C10.. FINALLY found one. Came out of a '71 C60 and even has the air pressure gauge! The guy was thinking on scrapping the heavy hauler since he hardly had any bites and I'm so glad I stuck to it and got him to pull it and ship it to me. Once it arrived, I started pulling it apart and got everything cleaned up and needles repainted/straightened. Cleaning that lens was nerve-wracking! Sweating the whole time lol ..but it turned out good. Put lights in it to match the theme of my truck. I used the bezel already in my truck since the one it wore had a big crack on the bottom and around the other mounting holes. The only thing left to do is put in the tach harness this weekend and she's ready to rock to the show on Sunday!

Just out of curiosity, what is the air pressure gauge monitoring?
