Have the link? I need that heat shield kit. That's a great price for it too, last time I looked it was over 100 bucks. Different reman company obviously. |
Re: PO has me PO'd
www.CorvetteAmerica.com,I thought that was a good price too, of course ya could get the whole chrome cover kit:lol:

Rare Corvette optioned '72 Jimmy, Duntov'd prepped:lol:
http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace563.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace564.jpg I think the PO has struck again, dipstick seems to be in the wrong location. There is a notch in the exhaust manifold and the heat shield and I'm guessing it should be rotated 45 degrees http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace562.jpg |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Nice parts...do you think it will go faster now? J/K Good deal on those. We've bought a lot from Corvette America among other places and IIRC they do have the best prices. Nice find!

Re: PO has me PO'd
Looks nice Jim, those the 2.5" manifolds?
Might have to get another set, they run good but they definitely burn plug boots on the middle cylinders. What made you decide to run an elec. water pump? |
Re: PO has me PO'd

Still undecided on the water pump, may go conventional till I get all the bugs worked out, then go back to the electric. Problem is I won't know if it stops pumping, maybe I can hook up an idiot light to it. Just the cool factor and it hasn't bin dun |

A lot of possibilities/options with an elec. pump for cool down. |

Re: PO has me PO'd
Don't like any of my remedies so far, but I could safety wire the insulation to the manifold...opinions? Maybe go with insulated boots
Heat shield seems flimsy, just one bolt on the pedestal, I'll try a bracket to the bosses on the manifold(10/32" drill and tap) Gotta get the manifold down anyway to deal with the dipstick, or buy a lokar http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace567.jpg Checked out plug wire insulators at the local speed shop, 70 bucks for a set of 8. Alittle steep |
Re: PO has me PO'd
New part of the project, installing DIY4X crossmember. Nice kit, superb manufactoring, and beefy too. Seems like some of the frames have to have holes drilled, but mine bolted up in the frame stiffner/box area. The only issue that I have is my oil pan sits on the crossmember before I can get the motor mounts bolts to line up...Remedy is to fit up the stock pan to see if that gives me enough clearance. If it does, then I'll blow out the sides and convert it to a 7 qt. oil pan
My dipstick didn't come out as planned, so once I drop the pan I'll beat it out from the underside. Ordered the Lokar dipstick, should be here tomorrow Here's some pics... http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace568.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace569.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace571.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace573.jpg |

Way to go Jim...it's good to see progress.

Re: PO has me PO'd
Very nice crossmember!
|
Re: PO has me PO'd
Thanks Guys....and YJ, I should've just put spacers in my motor mounts like you suggested, alot less money and work involved:lol:, but not the cool factor
Anyway, got some more work dun today. I had to use a jack to shift the crossmember up alittle, I opened up the holes, but it was still not enuff. I think I will slice my pan and creatively use a ballpeen. I need 1/2" to 3/4" to clear the crossmember. Flanges on the crossmember were a total of about 1/2" short, called Kert and he said it was OK to use the bolts to pull it in, so I went around in a radial pattern and tightened all four alittle at a time, then went to the other side and tightened them the same amount, working back and forth so it spread the crossmember evenly Oh BTW, the last pic is what happens when you babysit Reilly for the first time, I only went to look at my truck for like a minute. I'm outta practice after 30 years, glad my daughter doesn't come on my forum LOL...Looks like he's saying "Pops, you screwed up, don't get mad at ME" http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace575.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace576.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace577.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...0808_10001.jpg |

Re: PO has me PO'd
Crossmember is hold for a mod., seems to hit oil pan before motor mount bolts can be aligned. Kert has bin very helpful w/ the problem, stops what he is doin' and comes rite to the phone, talk about customer service... seems like if we flange the cross tube he can drop it down 3/4". He doesn't understamd why I'm having this problem, because many units are out there w/ no problems. Dropped the oil pan and it is the same demension as a stock pan. Hope to have it back in a couple weeks....
Moved back to the spark plug/ heatshield, dipstick issue. Found out on the P/U side that exh. mani. bolts should be torqued @ 30 ft/lbs. for the center bolts and 20 ft./lbs for the outside ones. What a great forum for info. thx guys http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace591.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace590.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace589.jpg |

Got my crossmember back from Kert, added 4 flanges(sons idea for fix) now I can easily drop the pan without supporting engine. Thanks to DIY4X

I wonder, had you made the mod first, if it would of fit without having to send it back to DIY...? Adding the plates by themselves might of given enough room for the oil pan clearance. (just thinking out load here) Nice mod non the less. |
Re: PO has me PO'd

My understanding from Kert was that certain oilpans will clear the crossmember, mine was about 1/2" short of lining up the motor mount bolts. Kert felt with the thickness of the flanges(total between 2 is a 1/2" per side) bolt on motor mount is a 9/16", so half of that is like 4.5/16". I needed a half a hole, to get it to line up. That whole paragraph probably doesn't make much sense, but I can still add a spacer between the flanges if I need more space I'll find out tomorrow, and will be better able to answer your question |
Re: PO has me PO'd
First off, on a safety note, since the engine is only hanging by the manifold plate, I had a sturdy jackstand under the ringgear in case something went wrong...I would like to mention that since Kert added locking nuts welded to the frame plate it makes it alot easier to mount up the crossmember. You don't have to try and hold the nut with a wrench in between the plate and the frame. Nicely thought out product and he was never to busy to take my phone calls
Basic hand tools required...sweet truck! http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace607.jpg Modified crossmember http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...eplace60-2.jpg It's still tight, but with a spacer between the flanges, it should be good to go http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace610.jpg This pic. shows how you can now drop the pan w/o removing motor mounts http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace609.jpg Off the hook http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...replace613.jpg So, to answer your question Kurt, yes it will fit with the addition of the flanges |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Thats some nice progress and the crossmember looks great!
