Yep. He did a few ( ;) ) more changes on his build. The 'Caster Mod' works for those also not doing quite as many changes.

I went back just to look, and wow - I'm surprised how much I've done, and how much of this I've thought out. I don't quickly recall so much of what I've done this far.

I sure hope it works :)

I've also done the redneck windchimes many times

I like the tip on bolts. I'll have to use that with the flux core wire I got with my welder that I'll probably never use to actually weld with

For my Ford 9", it's one diff for all gears.

For the 12-bolt in my '77 C10, you have to run 3.73:1 and up gears; they don't have one for taller gears.

I've ordered all of mine from Summit Racing out of the states.

Speaker pod for the center dash openings...?

jmarkha1 09-22-2021 09:35 AM

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Ah - didn't spot the Ford 9 - that should handle that turbo motor :-)
Summit have usually been good at getting stuff but even they have a shortage of 12 bolt stuff - maybe everyones building trucks :-)
plenty more for me to be doing though so Ill be patient...

WE HAVE A WINNER!

I prefer 6.5" speakers up front, but I cannot fit those in this dash. I bought a pair of 5.25" Rockford Fosgate speakers, and angling them slightly -might- give me a bit better soundstage.

Also bought a Pioneer head unit, and y'all are going to hate me for cutting the dash, but it's not like a dash hole is the only thing keeping this truck from originality (grin).

I didn't think about speakers. Will they be under the dash in the factory spot, or are you going to mount it on the firewall, pointing towards the cab?

A single din, Pioneer unit fits well in the factory location. Want to trade dash cutouts?

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

In the original spot under the dash. I need to add/lengthen some slots.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

I bet that will sound better with the angle than just both pointed straight up.

I might have to steal your idea on that

SkinnyG 09-22-2021 10:55 PM

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

I have two 5.25" 2-way in my '77, both pointing straight up. Marginal "sound stage" and next to zero "stereo" effect. I'm hoping this makes a difference.

that is "some assembly" - nice jump on the chassis build :hot:

Added a flange, and then welded some studs to the dash and this:

The 4L80E is freaking MINT inside. Super clean, and all the clutches are in spec!

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Ordered a full set of gaskets, new sprags just 'cuz, a TH400 direct piston, and extra friction and steel, and stuff to rollerize everything.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Sprayed "Mouse Gray" (RAL 7005) which is a match for Ford Engine Gray on the firewall. This is the engine colour, as well as the final interior colour. PPG Delfleet Essential, mixed 6:1:1:3, the 3 being PPG DX-10-FLT flattening paste to get a semi-gloss. It might be a bit too glossy for me, but I don't exactly wash my vehicles often....

Cab will be going back on the chassis when the transmission is done.

Machined the 4L80 Forward clutch hub, Center Support, and Reaction Carrier for torrington bearings. With a rollerized output shaft, this unit will be fully rollerized.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Nothing new to report. Busy week with work and stuff.

Scrubbed the 4L80E case down in anticipation of reassembly. Scrubbing with lacquer thinner and a stainless brush on the outside, liberal hosing with Brakleen on the inside. All wrapped up tight and waiting for parts.

Haven't done much this week because I'm waiting, but it's Thanksgiving in Canada, and allegedly I should spend time with family....

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Swapping the Detroit TrueTrac into my 9" axle so that I'm at least doing something while waiting on trans parts, and things aren't making sense....

... Turns out I actually HAVE an LSD in there already, just a worn out one.

No matter. I still REALLY prefer the TrueTrac in a street vehicle. Need to pick up the correct ring gear bolts though.

I could always sell the old worn out one to someone....

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Exciting news - local auto parts store has the ARP Ford 9" bolts the correct length!

Exciting update - the shank is too long, and they will not work!

Exciting update - the original bolts, which could be shortened, look and feel "stretched" to me; I'm not going to use them!

Exciting update - ARP does in fact have the correct bolts, with the correct head, at the correct length, with the correct washers, with the correct diameter and length of shank to fit my Ford ring gear and Eaton TrueTrac differential. One week shipping....

Most of the trans parts arrived, but we're prepping the house for replacement windows next week, so..... I'll get there when I get there.
