I was gonna say check the wires sounds like they are backwards if it goes backwards.... also just check all your ground connections and make sure they are tight and using a 'grounding washer'.... sounds like an intermittent problem with connections. pretty typical of these old trucks.

8-21 Just about done with the speedo conversion. I need to pick up a glass cutting bit tomorrow so I can drill a hole through the glass for the trip setter button. Once I do that, just a matter of putting it all in and wiring up the lights for it.

Great conversion!! Thinking about doing the same and hiding my other gauges. I think I'll do a gps speedo, tho. Seems like less hassle unless there's something I don't know about them (which is highly possible!!)

Very nice conversion 99. Liked the video too!

Today I drove from Gettysburg to Breezewood on rt 30. All the hills, sharp curves and elevation changes made me dizzy...don't know how you and Iceburgh handle them. Guess I like my flat straight roads...lol.

Thanks for sharing the conversion. Nice work.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

49- The GPS module from autometer is $200 bucks, so I think with that you could just wire it up to any electronic gauge, cheapest autometer electric gauge is $130-40. So to me its a waste, if your transmission has VSS. If your trans has no VSS (older) then you can do mechanical route. Also unless the GPS versions are better than my little TOMTOM that I'v used. They go in and out of service on back roads etc. So that wouldn't be cool.

AD- hahaha yeah breezewood aka blazewood, been there many times. It does get windy around them parts. not as bad as WV though, that place is all mountains. PA has a little bit of everything.

Just and FYI, though I'm sure you all have seen them, they sell VSS that you can hook up to the mechanical speedo output of your transmission. I bought a 2 pulse sensor from Jags That Run and got the correct speedo gears from an on-line retailer called Transmission Center. Other venders such as Autometer, Dakota Digital, and some eBay stores sell them. You can find them in different pulses to fit your need but some speedo heads can be programmed to accept any type of signal, if thats the case you don't even need to worry about what speedo gears you are using. I had to get the 2 pulse with correct speedo gearing because I'm using a TBI and the computer needs the signal for proper operation and transmission lock-up.

breezewood = truck/bus stops

In PA I think they just paved the goat/cow paths. I moved to kansas and promptly fell asleep driving, which is ok because everything is so flat and straight you just bump between curbs till you get where you were going.

They did. The roads wander everywhere and when I lived in PA it was common to drive around sorta lost. Roads are not in a grid like in the midwest.

Almost hooked up with Iceburgh however he was out of town.

Apologies for the diversion 99...back to your regularly scheduled truck build.

quick little vid on the gauges at night. My speedo is 10mph off, I need to recalibrate it, but happy its working. Love having the trip meter so I can see how many miles I log. Put 50 miles on it the past couple days. Took a friend for a ride and hit about 7k and it just kept pulling, very happy with the performance. though, I developed a squeeling noise, I think its my PWS belt, so I hope.

I'll try and post a how to on the gauge at some point, haven't gotten anyone inquiring about it, so maybe the interest isn't there. but for me, this is something I'v wanted to have ever since I built my 51'. So I'll be doing the conversion for that truck and hopefully a whole new interior bf winter.

Found out my pressure switch has been sticking, so I'm going to order a sealed viar switch. got my heater/ac evap coming. This thing is almost all done. Going to post some more vids soon. Hard to film and drive a stick!

P.S I know the speedo needs centered more and the tach isn't as bright. I'm pretty sure its a ground on the tach.

trust me man, make the how to, most guys come to forums like this for exactly that kind of info and its like a library. lots of info and almost no talking.

looks great!

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

thanks guys, yeah I'll either make a downloadable PDF or maybe even a video with pictures, much easier to understand it by video. I'll be doing the conversion for my 51' too, so maybe I'll film the process. Truck has been driving great, almost 100 percent sure my noise was coming from pws belt. I'll post some more vids on the driving.

Here is a little quick video. My battery was almost dead, so I didn't film much. also the one road is really sketchy so going fast on it is a crap shoot. But you can still see some 5k action. The second clip is just climbing a long hill in 4th gear. Really wasn't getting on it at all cause I had the camera in my hand. I'll post some more vids. Taking it up to erie again saturday, so I'll log another 100 miles.

8-31 thanks guys. I logged about 150 miles this weekend on it. I reworked my wiper bracket, still needs some adjusting, but I got it all wired up to a 2 speed switch and it parks the motor even though its a one speed motor. I got 30 into the motor and some time. had my friend shannon make me up an adapter for the arms and also needed some bushings made. So with this being a trial version, its a success but still needs proven. the alternative would be a 250 newport kit, which I have bought in past.

onto the heater/ac. Im personally not a huge AC fan in a hotrod, but... I aim to sell this truck so I figure I'd atleast install a unit and if they want to add AC down the road, they can. This guy fits like a glove and is pretty hidden for its size. got it of ebay, so we'll see how she works. came with two switches so that should be challenging finding a place to mount them, where you can't see them, cause I don't like how they look. If it was just one switch I could mount it under dash pretty easy, but with two room is tight and knowing which switch does what would get confusing if you can't see it.

9-10 Still logging miles on the truck. Have had over 100 miles every weekend on it so far. So I think I'm at almost 400 miles. Should have some more on it this weekend and I think I'm taking it to pittsburgh tuesday so that will be a nice 200 plus mile trip.

Got A/Fuel ratio gauge hooked up. Just put it under dash outta site for now. I like the gauge, obviously I'm not running at 19. Infact on idle its pretty dead on at 14.5 ish. checked plugs and they look good too. So not sure if I'll play with the timing much more or not.

Got heater/AC rigged up somewhat. This has been a nightmare trying to rig up a brace to hold it. Then I'll have to mount two switches somehow, not looking forward to that. Will be nice to finalize it. I have to drill out two holes in the inner cowl to route the hoses out of, kinda not looking forward to that either.

have to finish headliner, shifter and carpet and its almost 100 percent done. Got a pic with the 51' before the leaves all fall off.

9-12 well feels like late fall today. not driving truck in rain.

Got headliner in, well..... almost in. frigging nightmare headliners are.

cut shifter down, put a new knob on it. gotta get shaft painted

also finally got my poly bushings for my swaybar, got it installed but haven't driven yet. I know some guys run them some don't. My truck isn't bad without it, but cornering you can see the bag pressure rise about 20-30 psi, so maybe the swaybar will help.

9-16 Drove 49hardtimes to pittsburgh 100 mile trip. Heading back up north with it tomorrow. seemed to have gotten 20mpg on the whole ride down, only about half of which was actual interstate. have around 500 miles on it now.

shot a few flicks, getting more tomorrow before I head out.

gorgeous shots man! nice job getting "high" for a couple, I get upset at photos that are always at eye level or taken from the "pro photog crouch" haha. cleared the foreground, check, cleared the background, check, made sure nothing was "growing" out of the roof. good discipline!

US steel building still looks as tall as ever! you should find a rusty railroad trestle up on bradys bend or something, that truck would POP.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

thanks guys, I got alot more pics too. My friend/business partner shot the flicks. He and I have been shooting photos for a long time from the skateboard industry, I told him today " I feel like we were on a skate mission today" looking for the right spot, light, timing etc. Worked out really well today. I will be making some big prints actually. We have a 24" printer at my shop that prints high quality photos. Might try and do up some shirts of this truck as well.

As for the trains, funny you mention that. I did get some train shots. but honestly the best ones will be in my other home town of Titusville (where the oil industry started) the trains here are really old. Infact the oldest and only train that still delivers mail is located in Titusville and Oil City called the OTC. I'm gonna possibly get some shots down at Drake Well which is the actual area were Edwin Drake struck oil for the first time.

I thought you said tiltonsville and was getting all bouncy about the famous shreve high school poem. I read it again haha. we used to get to conneaut up around titusville, my brother still lives by meadville. I heard they closed the amusement park now.

and a pro couldnt have taken those shots, there is no evidence of post editing to kick the saturation up to 11. (/sarcasm, nice shots, although he could have turned the truck out of that shadow in the backdrop one, just kidding settle down! haha)

have I gushed enough over your trucks? maybe I will get to the strip in the next year or so and we can have an "arn"

joedoh, small world sometimes I tell ya. We use to vacation up in conneaut when I was a kid. The park had big fire last year or so, they can't get a break. Not sure if they opened or not. If you ever come up this way, hit me up. I'm 30 min from meadville. I'm in pittsburgh tue-thur every week so if you come up hit me up.

These photos have zero editing. Which you're right that pros are basically editors, not so much good photographers!!! Some will get some minor editing.
