Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well i got the bed taken off the truck, only had one bolt rotate on me! I also got the gas tanks dropped they do not look dirty. The fuel tank switch was not working but I messed with the plug an everythig seems to be working fine now. Hopfully I'll have it running good by this weekend!

sweeet.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I got both of the fuel tanks on and got all of the fuel system hooked up. Was having trouble with idle so I went back and found some vacuum lines not hooked up so I plug some and hooked others up and it runs great!
Next thing will be changing out all of the fluids and putting the bed back on so that I can use this truck to haul another crew cab 1 ton home to get the 6.2 out of. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Cool, good to hear that it runs great now!
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Yeah when I first had it running I was afraid something was wrong. But the carb rebuild seems to have done its job.
My fuel tank selector sounds like it is having a hard time switching between the tanks. I have never had one of these so I am not sure if it sounds normal or not. It works, but sometimes you cant get the tanks to switch, but if you don't switch it for a while and then switch it, it works. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Does this truck have egr? if so can you show me a picture of how its hooked up?
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Yeah, it has all of the emissions stuff. The thing is there is so much that idk that a picture will show much. I'll try to get a picture the next time I am messing with the truck.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Sorry Matt Man, I have not gotten around to getting that picture for you. I have not touched the truck, I have been trying to figure out the heating problem/oil leaking problem on my k10.
Plans have slightly changed for this build. My lead on a title-less crew cab with the 6.2 diesel in it, and the cab I wanted to use to cut up to fix my rust problems on mine was sold. I did find a guy that is going to be selling his 6.2 diesel out of his truck that he uses to tow with. It is out of a military truck and has less than 60k miles, he said he would give me the radiator, new glow plugs he has for it, fly wheel for a sm465, the oil cooling lines, basically everything needed to just drop it in, and wire the engine up. I think I might be trading him my big block for it. So for now I will be converting it to single wheel, I kinda like single wheel crew cabs. I don't need a dually, and I cant afford 6 tires for the truck, I am going to keep the bed and the rear axle for now, just encase I want to swap it back to a dually. So the drive train will be 6.2l diesel/SM465/NP205/Dana44 front/Corp 14 bolt rear. I was trying to get my K20 parts taken off the frame, but the flat bed is welded to the frame and I ran out of acetylene for my torch so that will have to wait. I think I will start tearing down this truck within two weeks. Should be fun! |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
no problem, looking forward to your build.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I have yet to touch the crew cab, I have been trying to get all of the parts I need for the 4x4 swap off of my k20. I got the Cab/Flatbed removed from the k20, and was able to get the front axle off of the frame today.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0159.jpg I am having some problems figuring out how to get some things to work. I was looking at the crew cab frame and the shocks are mounted on the inside of the frame, where as the Corp 14 bolt that I have on my k20 it has the shocks on the outside of the frame. The 1 ton does not have any mounts on the outside of the frame so Im not sure what to do about it yet. I guess I will figure that out when it comes time to mount it up. I am also wondering about the engine cross member I am not sure if the front of the k20 frame and the front of the c30 frame are the same height so Im not sure if I will have to run some spacers or not. I plan on running both a front and rear sway bar if they both bolt up. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I have run into that problem before. The 1 tons and 3/4 tons have different spring mounts. We cut the spring mounts off the axle and rewelded them where they needed to be for the 1 ton frame.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Im talking about the shock mounts. To solve the problem of the spring mounts I am taking all of the spring hangers off of the k20 frame and going to put them on the c30 frame.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
So the past few days I have been busy working on getting the 4x4 stuff off of the K20 frame so that I can mount it to the crew cab frame.
Front body mount/spring mount http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0165.jpg All of the parts, Rear axle spring hangers, front axle spring hangers/body mounts, engine crossmember, ect. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0166.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0167.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0168.jpg Here is the corp 14 bolt I am putting in place of the Dana 70HD http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0174.jpg Dana 70HD removed http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0175.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0176.jpg Now I am going to start mocking up the stuff to make sure everything is going to fit, then I will tear it down and paint the stuff and install it for the final time. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
You've been busy! Save your 2wd steering box encase you ever want crossover steering.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Yes I have, lots of using the cutting torch, angle grinder, and chisel and hammer. I am keeping my 2wd steering just for that, after I get this rear axle mocked up I am probably going to remove the rest of the body and the drive train. Then I can start on the front and then start getting things painted!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Good deal!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
So this long weekend has been very productive for me. I got the dana 70hd out yesterday and was able to get all of the brackets bolted to the c30 frame from the k20 frame for the rear axle. I used the 1 ton springs and mounted them to the 14 bolt.
Well I know everyone likes pictures so here are the pictures. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0177.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0179.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0180.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0181.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0182.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0183.jpg Next thing is to pull the engine/front clip/cab and convert the front to four wheel drive. Then it is time to tear all the stuff off and paint it. I am going to go pick up a SM465 manual transmission to put in this truck as I have a NP205 for one. So far things are working out pretty good, I have ran into some problems but I think I have found out ways to fix them. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I cant seem to keep my plans for very long. I am going to be making it back to a dually. To do this I am going to be moving the spring perches over to fit.
The guy that I am going to be getting the 6.2l from also has a TH400/NP208 that I am going at get so that I can keep it an automatic. I got the front clip off and started to get the 454 unbolted from the truck. So before to long I will have the engine out and the cab off to get it converted to 4x4. I am probably going to be finding a new cab to put on here as the one I have turns out to have more rust than I thought it was and it wont be worth trying to fix it. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I got the 454/TH400 pulled the other day and split them apart. I guess when they rebuild the transmission they also put a new Torque convert on it. It was a pain trying to get that thing out, if I tried to lift it above the motor mounts it would hit the hydro brakes but we finally got it out of there.
Pictures! http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0196.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0198.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0199.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0200.jpg Now its time to clean up and move some stuff around so that I can pull the cab off. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
nice work!
I can't wait for the 4x4 conversion ;) |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Lookin good!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Thanks guys, Cant wait to get it running. I just got a new air compressor hoping it will help with sandblasting parts and painting the truck when it comes time.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
This things gonna be sweet once you get it all done with a Cummins in it!

Here's a few pics of the truck I gave up to before starting my new project. Like I said, I was just getting to the point of going overboard with it - like tearing apart a 4k mile engine to basically turn it into a race car.... The Cummins was great though & loved it while I had it!
