Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Wouldn't lol fixed it. Western hauler beds weren't around until the late 70's, they dont match the pre-72 body styles. Not unless you want to spend $5,000 on a custom bulit one to match the trucks style.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I have also been thinking that if I build a flatbed for it, or even if I go with the step bed, that I may leave the frame shortened, and make it more of a bobbed truck. It looks like about 12" - 13" is missing. This is all theory though, too many ideas, too far down the road.
My first goal is get the truck, next would be get it running, street legal, and safe, then on to optional things. |
Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
That's what I thought you meant, just wanted to clarify.
I only paid $1k for the truck, so a $5k bed is OUT!! LOL I would probably design and build my own. Custom for less!! |

I finally caught up with the guy that had the flatbed I liked. I would probably make the sides gang down a little lover, or move the whole bed down more, just to cover up some of the visible parts and pieces under there, and size down the back a little, but this is the overall style I liked.
I don't know that I would hinge the upper side panels like he has, or just make them removable. |
Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
WOW, I was typing that fast, to try to get it on here, and get of the website before my boss came upstairs. hang...not gang and lower...not lover.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Does anyone local know of a relatively cheap towing service with a flatbed/rollback truck, that would haul my GMC. I have room now, and am trying to get every thing set up to go get my truck!

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Get Triple A. 3-5 free tows per year up to 120mi. WORTH IT. Seriously, you wont know how you lived without it.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Can I get AAA on a not street legal vehicle? If so, would the coverage apply right away?
I haven't ever had it, so am not sure? |
Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I've used it to move 3 vehicles that hadn't been on the road in years. And used it to move friends vehicles. Call AAA and ask them, trust me, they know more than I do.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Thanks for the info. I will definitely give them a call.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Sorry to hear about the Big D, hope things work out well.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Thanks Alan. Your build is coming along great by the way!!
Bradley, I called AAA and they said that it was $70 + one time charge of $10 per year. Includes (4) tows per year. When I asked them how soon it kicks in, the guy got a little huffy, and said I would have to wait until I got my permanent card to have a vehicle towed. It takes about 2 weeks. I explained a little of my situation, and he calmed down. He said that people sign up, have their rig towed the next day, then fight with them to cancel their service right after that. I told him I am not trying to screw anyone over, just trying to get my truck home. He went back to being nice and friendly after that. I'm not sure if I will go that route, because basically, that is what I am trying to do, sign up, just to get my truck towed. I have full coverage on my motorcycle, which includes towing and roadside assistance, and don't have any other vehicles...yet, so don't really need the coverage. Oh well, I'll keep thinking about it, and see what comes up. |
Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I personally thinks it's a great deal for $10 a year, especially because your daughter will be driving the 65 someday in the future. It's great peace of mind knowing that she can call AAA and get a trusted driver to tow her truck, or give her a jump if you can't make it to help. Just my $.02 :)

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Sorry, that didn't type out very clear. It's $70 per year, and a one time $10 charge.
I won't have to worry about her driving. She is actually my step-daughter, and her mother and I are in the process of divorcing. When my two kids (14 and 12) get to driving, then it definitely does sound like a great idea. I am going to look into it a little more, and see if the discounts they offer, may make it worthwhile anyway. Thank you again for the idea, that is definitely one I had not even thought about. |

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Did it again.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I would put a stepside bed on there and keep the original axles to
|
Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Oops did what again Crash'd Artwerks?
j.kirn, I love the look of the long step on the 4wd, but am really liking the thought of the flatbed on there too. It's not like I have to decide right now, LOTS of other things need to happen first. Thanks for the input!! |
Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
I vote for the long step and stock axles too! It will be wayyy cooler like that, keep it original man!
|
Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Around here, a rollbed runs $60.00. I don't remember how far they will go for that amount. Have you checked what the going rate is in your area?

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside
Thanks for the info Captainfab. I was hoping to get some suggestions from people on here on who to call before I called anyone. I talked to a couple of people at work who gave me a couple of suggestions. I am planning on calling them today to get pricing.
1985-GMC, I'll probably keep the stock axles, as long as they are in good order. I may need to re-gear them to be able to run freeway speeds though. The long-step vs. flatbed debate will probly rage around in my head until the truck gets further along. |

I was digging through all the pictures on my computer last night, and found this one of the back of the truck. When I saw the grind marks on the frame, I remembered that the back of the bed had some "L" shaped metal (bent flat steel) welded to the cross member. They had a piece of metal shaped like an arc in between them. I cut them off because they were not stock, and POORLY welded on there.
You probably cannot see it in the smaller picture, but the diff cover says 9" Ford (that was hard to type). Does the rear end look stock to you guys, or do I have some inter-species mixing going on? Still waiting on a response from my attorney on taking the truck. If I get the go ahead, I should have it with me within the next week or so!! :metal: Sorry the picture is rotated. Apparently, I needed a V8 that day. LOL |

Played with drawing a flatbed on there in AutoCAD. The little plus signs are meant to be diamond plate. I was thinking of using stock tail lights and reverse lights to tie the old in with the new.
The perspective is a little off in the picture, and it is just a quick sketch, but gives the general idea of matching it to the body lines of the cab. Let me know what you think. |
