Nobody wants to borrow your truck to haul anything when it's a shortbed. I sold my longbed BB truck when I found my shortbed.

I'm with Shane, they're all nice. Personnally though, when others ask about my 71 GMC, I start with"actually I'm building a car" it's shortened and it'll be a daily driver. I don't care for cars (real cars). I not only own two lifted GM trucks, I like them big! My Studebaker was a short bed before I shortened it. It's only got a 5 foot somethin' bed. Over 350 HP. line locks, summit built transmission...no-ones ever called it a girl truck as I recall. Point is, like I've heard others on this board say "build what you want", it's your time and money. To really answer your question. If I was building a "truck" to do truck stuff. I'd never shorten it. My lifted, short bed, GMC Z71 isn't even practical for a truck, but it will pull my car trailer all day long. Besides, I haven't seen any 8 foot bed side for sale recently.

Re: Q: Why is there so much bed shortening going on?

I luva the looks of 8-lugs :metal: I think nicely fixed up 3/4 ton longbed 2wd's look awesome. They look like trucks. Specially with nice truck wheels. Specially with chrome caps and chrome long lugnuts, wide truck tires (no low profiles) and a shiny aluminum toolbox on the bed. They even look better with a matching trailer towed behind them (boat, car hauler, etc) w/ matching toolbox. Add air horns and you're all set. TOOOOT, TOOOOT!!!

I think short wheel base trucks are preferred for rock crawling over long wheelbase trucks, that's why people change blazers and shortbed 4x4's to 8-lugs for function. Did I just mention 8- lugs again

is it that shortbeds are just popular right now?
:[/QUOTE]
Short beds have ALWAYS been more popular. 35 years ago only the short step sides were "cool" but you can see that has flipped over to the fleetsides being the more desired now. Its all about looks, and I agree with the one who said: if you gotta ask you wouldn't understand.;)

I like the looks of a shortbed. But I bought a longbed because I knew that
I was going to lift it 8" and to me a swb that is lifted that much looks too
short.

I agree with Ohio on the subject of lifts. You take a short bed up that high and throw it together it just looks like a screwed up Tonka Toy. Now Mudder67's red beast is done right. Short wheel base but a widened and absolutely perfect stance.

Now that would be cool! In all my years I think I have seen one long bed stepside. It was a mid 70's 4x4 (think it was even a 3/4 ton). I liked the looks of it.

I have seen at least two long stepsides running around this town. They are different.

Better turning radius
Give me a 2 lane road and drive no need for reverse a shot of gas slight turn of the wheel it's going the other direction. :)

They are a diffirent types of trucks. I have my 84 C20 LWB for work and the 67 C10 SWB for fun and I drive it really fast. I would be scared to drive the C20 the way the 67 gets driven.

Re: Q: Why is there so much bed shortening going on?

My daily driver is a 2wd, lwb, 3/4 ton truck that I like better for it's 8 foot box and I do think it looks more like a truck. I am fixing this truck up nice but it will be used for hauling dirt bikes and maybee a camper(hey it is a custom camper) so it won't be perfect. I would like to find a truck for a full restoration and I like the look of a lowered swb but lowered lwb trucks look kinda cool also so I think it will come down to what is avallible when I am looking to buy another truck. One thing for shure is these trucks are a blast to drive and they all look cool.
