Here is Pa's law.....Persons 18 and older if the vehicle is traveling less than 35 mph; inapplicable to occupants 17 and younger if the cargo area is enclosed; parades, hunting, and farm operations

We used to to a lot of dumb things in the younger years.
Riding in the back of a pickup is just plain stupid...

Kansas has a $50 per person fine levied against the driver if a passenger is not restrained in an attached seat.

9 people going to the drive-in would be pretty expensive.

Last weekend the whole family loaded up in the truck (it is the favorite vehicle of my little girls) and went to the park a mile or so away. I drove on the way with my wife in the back. I let her drive home and I sat in the bed. That five minutes was one of the most relaxing and peaceful times I have had in months. It was fine for around the neighborhood or to the park and back, but I would not do it much further or any faster. Too much at stake.

When I was little, my Grandparents would take all of us grandkids up to their homes on the canadian border - about 700 miles.

They had the basic aluminum topper back then (late 60s) and built a platform that was at bedrail height so we could lay on it and look forward through the back window.

There would be 5 of us back there, no restraint, no nothing. if grandpa had a wreck we would have been like missiles shooting through the windshield.

No riding in the back in this State. No road hunting from the truck,no sipping a beer , no fun stuff anymore when talking about trucks here anyway.

Louisiana - No person(s) under the age of 12 years can ride in the open bed of a truck or in a utility trailer.

A good friend of mine lost his 18 year old son several months ago. The boy and several friends were mud riding at night and he got his truck stuck. He got out and jump in the bed of another truck and as the truck was traveling down the highway the driver swerved to miss something in the road and in doing so the boy was thrown from the bed and broke his neck.

Although it seems somewhat safe and fun and we all have enjoyed doing it...there are alot of things that can go wrong. Please be safe.

Isn't the seat belt law a federally mandated thing?.......superceding any older state laws. Ohio went to the "primary" type law a few years ago, from federal pressure I think. It's not really federal law, they just threaten to withhold money from states that don't comply.
Ohio used to issue passengers their own tickets, the driver wasn't responsible for them. I don't know if it is still that way though.

I believe in AZ you can still do it. IIRC, they tried to pass a law a few years ago banning this, but the people against it said that on many of the Indian reservations here, they do not drive very fast and a truck is their only transportation. BTW, I remember when my dad got a truck in the late seventies, I would ride in the back sitting on the spare tire in the front of the bed. It was only 100+ degrees outside. It didn't bother me back then...

Well that link says thats its legal for everyone here in KY but I have gotten a warning for being in the bed of a truck riding from a tobacco patch to the guy I work for's house, that is about 1/4 mile on the highway, didn't get a ticket but the officer said everyone had to be in a seatbelt. So I don't know about here.

Yes, OKLAHOMA is much cheaper to live in than Kalif most people who come and visit like it. YOu can do a lot of things here. I hear about small towns where the local police do stuff like "drive your car as fast as you can and I'll radar you for fun." may seem crazy but it's true. Just have your safety chains around your trailer when you're pulling your alfa bales.

yep, that happened to a cousin of mine with a cuda, he told him that if he ever wanted to top it out call him, and he would radar it

I'd like to know what the law is here in Ontario, Can. A few times I've let people ride in the back of my truck at the beach (crusing) so basically just low speeds etc, etc. and never been pulled over. Seen others pulled over but were clearly being wreckless or open booze involved...
