Re: How bad is it?
I would rip out all that rotted wood out of the bed first of all. Every time it gets wet it will just hold moisture and continue to rust.

Re: How bad is it?
That's a good idea. Sorry but I don't know anything about carb's so can someone tell me if my carb is manual or electric choke???

Re: How bad is it?
Ain't nobody else suggested it, but I think the first thing you should do is to give ol' dad a hug and thank him, but I'm gonna bet you already did that.
Like the others suggested, you need a cab. Owing to the comments from late last week, these trucks are becoming more and more popular, like the 55-57 Chevy's did about 30 years ago. Find the best cab that you can afford. Make sure you can document what it is, and where you got it. At sometime in the future, you're gonna want to title/license it and you don't want any issues with the motor vehicle department. |
Re: How bad is it?
As stated above, get the safety things taken care of then drive it.Start a list of things you want to do to it.If you don't have much experience start with small stuff that you can do in a day or less with little skill and work your way up.Most of the mechanicals on these are fairly simple so they can be learned by almost anyone. Some things take a bit of technique and knowledge. We will help with the knowledge you have to develope the technique. Most of all don't get discouraged or frustrated. It takes time to build a truck and there will be times when you don't feel like working on it.Unless you have to fix it to get to work, don't.You will not do as good a job as you expect from yourself and you will probably have to do it over.Good luck and enjoy!!

Re: How bad is it?
is that a 2 barrel or 4 barrel carb?
|
Re: How bad is it?
oh and i have the same exact motor, it is a great motor, not too much horses to get you into alot of trouble but plenty none the less.
|
Re: How bad is it?
It's the same 4barrel that was on the old eng from like 20 years ago. I think it is a Holly barrel but I don't know if it is a manual or electric choke. I'm used to working on fuel injected engines.

Re: How bad is it?
The first thing I would do is sell the white mustang, buy more beer and then start looking for a cab. Wait on doing a perfect job on the bed, new repop LWB parts are coming soon. They have one new bedside in N.J. and hope to be selling them soon. Good luck finding a cab and selling the stang hahahahah

Re: How bad is it?
Oh.. No.., can't sell the stang. That is my pride & joy. I've put lots of money & time into it & it's not going anywhere. So can someone tell me what carb I got???
|
Re: How bad is it?
....not without a better picture. With the air cleaner on it, it's fairly obscure. I can't see enough to make an even slightly stupid guess.
|
Re: How bad is it?
Cool, I'll have to check when I go to my dads house later. Thanks!!!

Re: How bad is it?
I say new cab as well... my smile became a frown and I scrolled through your pics.
Find a donor truck and convert yours to SWB!!! :metal: Hehe. Have fun man! |
Re: How bad is it?
Yeah, I plan on converting it to a short bed.

You plan on converting it to a short bed, and yet you dont know the diff. between a Holley and a Qjet? Slow down and learn to walk a little before you run---- as everyone else has said, swap the cab, thats a major transplant. But just get it running good first. ---- if it wasn't a family keepsake, i would say look for one thats a lot less rusty. But, i know how it is with hand me downs -- its hard to scrap 'em sometimes. I have an example of one like that in my garage at this moment |

Re: How bad is it?
it could just be me, but i think it might be too far gone because it looks to have beer bottles growing out of the bed.
seriously though, i would go find a rust-free cab and (you didn't hear me say this because it's illegal) swap the VIN plate from your door jamb over to the other door jamb. there is at least one place i've heard you can buy the special flower-shaped rivets so your local DMV/DOT/LEO won't give you crap about it not having the right kind of rivets. |

I see you're a new member, maybe you didn't know, but ... I understand it's easy to get excited about these trucks, and everyone wants to help a guy out, but we all are asked to live by the same rules here at the forum. :) |
