It was a long journey. I started by taking the bed off and apart to replace the wood. Then while it was off I painted the back of the truck. I just did it in my carport. I worked on the pieces for about a month at a time, each fender, tailgate and hood. My father and I built a spray booth in the carport with PVC pipe, hooks, rope and plastic sheeting. We even had an exhaust fan. I painted the rear fenders and bed sides in there and some other small parts.
When it came time to paint the hood it was a calm day and we were to lazy to setup the booth so we shot it in the open. It came out ok, one bug and some orange peel. For the rest of the truck we decided to use a booth, I have a friend who paints cars in a converted garage and he let us use that. But I could have painted it all in my carport. The thing is, the clearcoat gets EVERYWHERE. Luckily my neighbors didn't complain, but I had to clay bar the windshield of my Toyota which sat 30ft away from where I sprayed.
I used a HVLP gun from Devilbris, $160, for paint and a siphon gun for primer. I put down sealer primer first, then lacquer primer afterwards because it seems to sand easier. Also, since it was 2 different colors of primer it helped in finding low spots. |
