I'm not exactly sure how he does it, but I did notice on the thunderbird that he's doing that he adds his own switches to the control panel and the levers then have new actions. So, the cables that are attached to those levers now are gone and there's a switch that that lever actuates. For anything more technical, you'll have to ask him. :)
