Shouldn't matter if it's electric or mechanical fuel pump. He says it's a 96 Vortec 350. Don't be too surprised if he comes back on here and says the exhaust leak fix fixes the noise. With 3 of 6 bolts missing it's going to make a pretty good ticking noise. From what I understand it's an 87 originally injected truck, so he's using his dizzy/coil/computer. No problems there. He said it ran good before, so that rules out the computer going haywire from lack of injection system input. It's most likely the exhaust leak, but I mentioned the rockers just to be on the safe side. No reason to beat your head on anything.

Ok, had me wondering there for a second about that timing issue. In mid 96 they changed from the tan/black stripe wire to not being able to control timing at all, it was all done in the computer and GM called the hard timing(turning the dizzy) the Cam Retard Offset and could only be set with a computer scanner.

If it is a 96 Suburban engine it has to be a 350, they didn't come with a 305. Only the 350, 454(in 3/4 ton models) and the 6.5L TD.

A dizzy? im guessing you mean distributor. ive seen 96-00 3/4ton suburbans with 5.7s in them.

thanx everyone! heres the low down, its an 87 silverado, original tbi truck, motor/trans is 355/700r4, motor is a 1996 5.7 vortec, bored .30 over, RV cam, roller tipped rockers, aluminum holley intake, and a holley 750 double pumper, using a fuel regulator and original intank fuel pumps, and, the clicking is gone! turns out not only 3 header bolts missing, but 2 bolts on the collector! ugh! didnt have money for gaskets, but took care of the clacking, still hear a faint tick, but i'll replace them when the new mufflers go on, cause this exhaust has to go. thanx for all the input fellas!
