Re: Project NOT4SLE
I purchased a carb spacer plate today along with a skip white distributor. I figured I see no sense in timing the oem original distributor on this truck to get it running.
If I am going to patch this motor till OI build a new one I figured I might as well try to help it run better till then. I also ordered a set of 90* spark plug wires, a crimping tool and a dress up kit to continue putting lipstick on a pig. Ill have pics hopefully on friday for you. |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
never had one of the trucks with the stovepipe filler on the valve cover, may be easier to swap out the valve cover if you cant find a grommet to fit well. does a air breather fit there. your making good progress, keep up the work!

Re: Project NOT4SLE
I was thinking about just switching out the valve cover. However I really did not want ot put any money into this motor while I get other stuff done and build my motor for this truck.
However, THe UPS man showed up and it is Christmas in August today. :metal: This should get her on the road and running within the next few days. I work tonight from midnight till 8am and sunday morning 6am till 2am, YES 20 hours. so Monday is the day Im shooting for to get her running and parts installed. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0340.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0341.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0342.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...3/IMG_0343.jpg |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
Just an FYI, those crimpers are wire crimpers and not the ones used for crimping ends on spark plug wires. You might get them to work okay but they are not correct.
These are the correct plug terminal crimpers. http://go.mrgasket.com/ProductImages/500/170036.jpg They make a world of difference in the quality of the crimps, for plug wires. Editted, I guess looking closer at the pic, there is some crimp spot on the handle that should work. Kind of hard to tell. |

[QUOTE=vegaschevy;3489609]I was thinking about just switching out the valve cover
Vegaschevy, I have the same style valve covers laying around. Let me see what kind of plug or breather It has. I wont be in need of it if you want it. |

Re: Project NOT4SLE
Cannot wait till Thursday so I can work on the beast again. Worked all weekend a bunch of hours
|
Re: Project NOT4SLE
I used a spacer on mine as well but it's because I used a stock GM aluminum intake which is slightly shorter and I installed an HEI distributor so I needed clearance for my breather over the dizzy.
|
Re: Project NOT4SLE
Any updates?

Re: Project NOT4SLE
tomorrow morning I am hoping to have this beast running. I have been working days, then nights, then both back to back and so being awake during the day to work on this pig has been non existent.
I installed the Dizzy, and ran all my wires the other day. No pics uploaded yet. I also am not using the spacer now as i got the fuel line bent and hopefully it seals up well when tightened.... HAHAHA Tomorrow morning I am waking up and working on her though. I am hoping to get the radiator back in and fuel hooked up. Then she should be ready to fire up. |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
my buddy picked up a 67-68 cowl hood for this truck in Ca today. So all I need is some small stuff to complete the swap lol
|
Re: Project NOT4SLE
cool...I'll be looking forward to the pictures.
|
Re: Project NOT4SLE
You didn't want to use the spacer instead of bending the new fuel line? And are you sure your breather is going to clear the dizzy?

I got a few hours work completed and the fuel line ran. I need to reinstall the rad and fire it up. I will probably be putting in the 71 tank I have as this one seems to be in worst shape inside. |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
Actually before I switched carbs and installed the spacer, I picked up one of those black plastic breather spacers from autozone for like 9.00 and put it on top of the carb. My breather is like yours, pretty well balanced so it worked good for a year or so. You could try that for now.

Re: Project NOT4SLE
Well when I wake up later on Ill hopefully finish the truck and have her running. I just got off work and I got a friendly call from Nate at Porterbuilt who was pretty much tucking me in to bed...... and decided to empty my wallet while rubbing my back :lol:
I have a few goodies that will help the truck once she runs.. HAHAHA She will be 4.5/7 lowered and have some outstanding built parts under her ECE 2" front drop springs ECE 5" Rear Drop springs :metal: CPP Bolt in C notch Shock relocators KYB Shocks Mcnaughtys 2.5" Drop Spindles Porterbuilt Rear Track Bar Porterbuilt Trailing arms Porterbuilt Crossmember http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/o...s/DSC05459.jpg http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/o...s/DSC05483.jpg http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/o...s/DSC05486.jpg |

Re: Project NOT4SLE
Subscribing. Hoping to watch a few projects this fall/winter.
Amazing how many of these sweet stockers are still driving around. |
Re: Project NOT4SLE
got everything back together and she was timed 180 out. That was problem number one. Problem two is she was not getting any fuel at all. I am guessing maybe the fuel pump just so happened to go out on me. Not really sure.
I started it and drover it on to the trailer when I bought it and then although it ran REALLY rough drove it off and into the driveway. Now on the engine side of the fuel pump no fuel is coming out. Hopefully a new electric fuel pump and she will be good to go. unless anyone else might have a few ideas. She did start and run with fuel dumped in to the carb though for about 2 seconds. |
