You may get hassled but here in America we all still have the right to bear arms. If the long gun is on the rack, in clear sight (not concealed) then you have not broken any laws.

That's why the "window rack" was developed, to keep the firearm in a non-concealed location.

In Iowa it has to be in a case or broken down. It had better not be loaded even in the case.

Good point. Four states in the United States: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois have laws that regulate the use of gun racks.

Additionally the possession (including in a vehicle) of a firearm is illegal within a certain distance of a school or public building

I have a friend that was a prison guard here in Iowa,he was suspended for having a BOW in his gun rack at work.

Back in the '60's, when I was in high school in SE Okla, every pickup at school had a gun rack with a 30-30 & cattle "hot shot" hanging on it. The pickup was unlocked and, most of the time, window down. The thought of using the gun on a fellow student never crossed our mind. What went wrong with society?

One thing you might do is point the business end of the AR15 the other way. I know its unloaded but as they say unloaded guns are the ones that kill. It is legal to carry a rifle this way in Oklahoma, a long gun cannot legally be concealed, if in a car it should be unloaded and in the trunk, but since you do not have a trunk in a pickup having it unloaded and in plain sight is the only legal way to transport a rifle. when I lived in Conn. I was heading to vermont hunting had my 308 hung in the rear window and headed out..well about 1/2 way to Vt In Mass I passed a state cop..he pulled out got behind me and the blues came on...he pulled me over and then asked me if I knoew why..with a dumb look I said speeding ( again) he said nope "whats in the back window??" ummmm nothing he said "look Again" I sad you mean my gun..."yep you know its Illegal to have a fire arm in Mass without a permit?? " I told him I was on the way to VT to go hunting he said "No Matter" that was just before he escorted me back to Conn....

the correct way is to call Mass State police and they will take it at the boarder and transport it at there convinece to the VT line for you....Yea Like that will happen

Here in god's country( kansas, lol) we can carry a concealled loaded firearm. You just can't carry one during hunting season if it is intended for hunting purposes

In Texas there are hardly any laws or restrictions on carrying a shot gun or rifle on your vehicle in plain site. You can't carry a rifle or shotgun in a place that might cause an alarm such as a mall. You can legally carry a hand gun concealed in your vehicle without a license. I have a license and can carry as many as I can conceal except in those listed restricted places.

So true. One of the worst tongue lashings i ever took as a Deputy Sheriff was from an old farmer that i stopped one day on a local highway. He had a gun rack with a shotgun in one slot and a rifle in the other. I politely explained to the elderly man that in the State of Texas it is against the law to display firearms in the rear window of his vehicle. He almost went into a rage. He told me that he had been carrying guns in his truck like that all his life and he was not about to stop now. So, I instructed him that if he didn't remove them on the spot i would have no choice but to take him in. He was foaming at the mouth and demanded my name and badge number. I gave him my info, he removed the guns from the rack and promptly drove to the Sheriff's office to file a complaint on me, LOL. When got there he demanded to see the Sheriff and did so. However, when the Sheriff got done with him, i never ever saw the guns back in the window of his truck nor ever heard another word from him again. Old habits die hard i guess.

Honestly, i can see the old man's view and i understood his hostility. I too grew up with guns in the back window. But, thanks to all the thugs and scum in our world today the gun racks across America have all but become extinct sadly. The 64 i used to have had a gun rack in it when i bought it. It was nice to see the nostalgia of it still in the old truck. I sure miss those days.

I think law's like this one are more likely representative of the vocal anti-gun crowd than they are actual scum/thugs....there's no less gun toting bad guys running around now then 30 years ago. But there sure are less gun toting law abiding citizen's. I never once saw a law stop a criminal from carrying their piece. All respect to the officer's that have to enforce them but there are many laws regarding guns enacted since I was a kid that IMHO are just dumb.

I agree but my point is that thanks to all the thugs and scumbags committing crimes to start with and then getting a panty waist attorney to defend them is why the laws are getting changed. It only makes it harder on law abiding citizens to have guns. I have spent many many hours studying case law on gun related crimes and most of the time "somehow" the person defended himself is the one who apparently did something wrong. The criminals have and always will carry guns legal or not. IMHO the laws are made nowadays to constrain good people (law abiding folks) from defending themselves as much as possible or so it seems. You guys think you are frustrated about this kind of stuff. I have arrested these dirtbags many times over my 14 year career on gun related crimes. Before i had the paperwork done, most of the time they would be bailed out and back on the street. Now, that is VERY VERY aggravating. Here in Texas we have the Castle law now that allows a person to have a firearm contained and concealed within the confins of your property i.e, boat, RV, home, car. You CANNOT carrying it on your person anywhere unless you have a concealed carry permit. It does come in handy for those who don't have a permit or atleast from a protecting your property standpoint.

My Suburban came with one in the side window, behind the driver's side.
It's well-used... so well used, the metal is poking through the holders on two of the slots, and I didn't know it and scuffed up stock on one of my guns!

Amazingly, I found a New Old Stock one exactly like mine, at my swap meet.
I'm going to mount it in the back by the fixed rear window on the driver's side, rather than in front of the slider in the second-row seat.

I use it all the time during hunting season.
Got pulled over in the local speed-trap town a few years ago, on the opening day of Deer Season... dressed in camo with my 10 year old son, a single-shot 20-gauge and a Winchester .30-30 lever in the rack in the window.

He didn't say anything at all about the guns, just that I was doing 55 where the sign dropped down to 45 in the middle of the curve on the road. I got the ticket, and THEN he wanted to talk about the cool old truck I was driving. The state shut the speed trap down two years later--it's a 4-lane state highway, and they took away the authority from the little town to set the speed limit on it.

So in one story we have the good and bad about living in Rural Georgia!
