Nice.....gonna have to try this one during my power group swap.

Just did this on the front drivers side window. Up or down now takes 3 seconds flat, vs 4 going down before, and 4.5 going up.

Any more success stories w/ this relay mod?

been working on this all day now and all i get is a clicking sound from the relays. I've retraced my wiring and its all correct. I don't get what I'm doing wrong and its driving me nutts.

Hey there I am working on this also and for me it works perfect
Can you give me some more insight on how you have it wired and I can hopefully help. My drivers side is done and I will finish up my pass side tomorrow.

Thanks
Mike

Broke out the test light and found my problem. It ended up being a $1.32 splitter that was interrupting my power source. I just took for granted that it wasn't impeding the flow from the junction block. Windows are definitely quicker now.

Re: Power Window Relay Mod?

Hi there.

I am also in the process of doing this mod to my windows and it's definately awesome... Drivers side works perfect, but I have a small issue with the passenger side that I beleive is not even relay related...

Before I did this mod my passenger window would only go down a few inches and then stop..... then I had to wait a minute or so before i could get it to continue down another few inches...

With the relay mod I thought it would fix that issue.... but it did not and now it goes down the same 5 or 6 inches but of course faster before it stops....

At this point I am thinking it's a switch or motor issue.... what else could it be and how can i test to see which one it really is before I go and buy both and replace...

Any help is certainly appreciated...
Thanks
Mike

bypass the switch and just touch the wire to power. if it still does it, possibly motor or other related

Has anyone tried bypassing everything and going directly from the battery to the motor just for troubleshooting?

Id try but I'm away from home for another two weeks...

I'm still contemplating getting rid of the PW. I already have some manual regulators. I really need to make up my mind

I forgot about this one. Just might do this on mine when I swap the new motors in...

I took it a step further with my harness by converting the switch to act as a ground trigger:...this way, the switch carries virtually no amperage-just a ground trigger for the relays. And, the express down feature is that much easier to install.

How do you get express down?

Re: Power Window Relay Mod?

Depending on what vehicles you pull them from, the wiring layout might vary but, there are basically 4 wires. One is constant 12V, another is spliced in parallel with the wire to run the window up and then the wire to run the window down gets cut and each of the other two module wires go to each lead. The logic behind the relay/module is such that when a sudden spike is seen when you press the window switch down, there is a capacitor of sorts that "holds" voltage to maintain power to the window motor. After usually 6-8 seconds, the solid state relaxes back to a normal state.

In! I'm gonna do this to! And turn 'em into automatics, maybe invest in a higher quality switch than those chrome factory ones that always seem to have problems.

If this relay mod has anywhere near the same effect that it has on the headlights, it will be well worth doing. Headlights are 10x better than those factory junkers. Here's what you want for full auto. No sense in just doing auto down, only to have to hold it to go back up.

Re: Power Window Relay Mod?

I was doing some drawing on my existing window relay diagram and you could add another express module for express up but, the harness would start getting a little busy. I may start offering a variety of harnesses I've designed for my 86 shortbox if there is any interest, like dome light delay, courtesy lighting on with IGN key off and killed when door opens, auto-on headlight mod, and I also adapted the compass and ambient temp from a donor Blazer for use in my truck.

Most people imo aren't much into electrical upgrades like these it appears though-its more of a personal challenge for those who like electrical stuff....lol

I'm into it. I want all those luxuries the new stuff has. It makes it a lot easier to drive the ol girl when it doesn't feel like you have to step back into the stone age.

Now that I've got all 4 windows working in going to tear the door panels off again and do this. Wish I would've seen this earlier today. Lol can't wait to have my own personal guillotine :-)

Re: Power Window Relay Mod?

I replaced my driver's window switch and the window sped up.

Then I read this thread.

I wonder if poor contact in the switch adds too much resistance, and bypassing it with a relay makes the switch a non issue since the switch with the relay mod no longer carries current for the motor?

gmachinz 02-25-2014 09:27 PM

Re: Power Window Relay Mod?

There's a variety of reasons why adding relays speed the motors up. To begin with, as window motors age, they draw more current. This current travels through the switches and over time, they can overheat them causing partial melting of the plastic housing and because the door panels are poorly sealed from the elements, the contacts within them corrode easily. All of this adds to resistance which is never good.

By using relays, you don't have to deal with overheating and instead of the switches as a means of transferring current, they merely act as ground triggers-allowing the relays to handle the high load which they are better designed for vs. switches. Most new vehicles have a type of solid state relay design for this which makes it easy to incorporate express down features-as do my kits. Moreover, relays are just more efficient and its a simple upgrade to do.

When I get my windows working again out I'll give this a shot. My windows are slooooow.

Re: Power Window Relay Mod?

Could someone post a diagram for the passenger side. how does it receive power from the drivers switch? There are 2 relays per window. I have a crew cab so would I need 8 relays on the drivers door, or would the individual window relays on each door be wired to operate off the signal from the drivers switch.
