Well I tried installing a clutch fan that Sammy let me try.
But I can't get the long bolts thru the spacer. Can anyone think what I can try next? |

Not sure what your saying. You need longer bolts? Bolts too large to fit? I'm thinking some real long bolts that bolt the entire thing together.

I would NOT run the spacer with the fan/clutch, I tried the first time and it vibrated like crazy! Just put the assembly together without the spacer, there are two different fan clutch lengths available as well. (I found that out after I purchased mine) You want to half the blade exposed from what I know... Hope this helps!

I can not get the LONG bolts I have not in between the clutch part on the four hole mounting flange. It looks like it will only work with very very short bolts only. If I did that it would be like 2-3" outside of the shroud, which does me no good.

I do believe that the bolts are fairly short with the clutch set up compared the flex fan/spacer. You may look into the clutch for the 4wd/rear most engine position, they are longer than the common one to my knowledge. I agree that the fan should be half in/out of the shroud, not completely uncovered, but I would not sun the spacer with the clutch. It is a lot of weight hanging really far out on the water pump... You might have to go to the Jeep fan in the shroud, get a longer fan shroud or use dual electric fans mounted on the radiator or core support. Just my .02

My vote is radiator. Been there, done that. Replaced fan with manual, hoses, thermostat, pump, flushed radiator, did flow test, blew gunk out of fins with power washer, etc. Finally, out of sheer frustration, bought new radiator - shazam! instantly solved. They just slowly plug up over time, get less efficent at cooling. still flowed just fine, simply would not cool...

Yeah I might go clean and flush the raditor before investing in a new one to see if that solves my problem.
But not until I get this fan deal fixed. May try to install this clutch fan w/o the spacer and see how it performs and go from there. |

the clutch fan is held on by screw in studs, that screw into the water pump (available at the part store) and hold the fan on with lock washer and nuts. Also thats looks to be a later model fan i had one like it but it wouldn't fit in my shroud so i ordered me one from summit for my 71 to replace the flex fan. i would not use a spacer on a clutch fan either.

I suggest a 4 row and electric fan, that's what I have and my truck runs no more then 190 not sure about cooling an olds big block but works great on my sbc

And there is an xtra Fan in the garage at sammy's out of a mid 90's firebird that is just like what is in my truck.

firedog - Sammy did show me your setup (even though it was dark) and yes mine is a 4-row raditor as well.
Yeah right now I am in need of a dual fan setup as I am almost 100% certain this clutch fan will not fit inside the shroud and cool correctly. Sounds like I need to go back to the source (Sammy) and see what we can work out on that electric fan he has and what it will take for him to part with it. :lol: |

Well I tried installing the clutch fan today and found out it was too big for my fan shround.
So a friend of mine had an electric fan so I somewhat got it installed. (meaning I could not get all the mounting zip tie thru the raditor and A/C condensor.) Didn't have all the parts I needed for the wiring so will try again tomorrow. |

That fan is for a later model, i ordered a fan and clutch from summit 16'' maybe? i just mesured my shroud before i ordered, does great. just a thought if ya need it.;)

Well I got a small cheap electric fan installed and it seems to cool better than that flex fan did.
I'd rather be running a nice clutch fan setup, but for now this will work. Thanks for everyone's input it was appreciated. |
