Just been driving this thing, and man I have to say it's just about perfect mechanically. I ordered new hinge pins and roller pin for the driver's door. I might be able to tackle that this weekend. Really, from a "get-in-and-drive-it" perspective that's the only issue, and it's not bad. I guess the truck gods were smiling on my, a 13 year-old truck without skeletons in the closet!

I'm going to be swapping out the master cylinder for a later model to firm up the pedal soon as well. The steering isn't bad but it could be tighter, I believe this is more design related than wear and tear. I'm thinking through how to address that also.

I can't stand being stock, so I'm working on the 4/6 drop parts and new wheels and tires just aren't happening right now but I can't stand the aluminum turds so I'm scroungin together a set of 15" steel factory wheels. They'll be semi-temporary and winter wheels. What do you think about this look?

Booyah. Look what popped up on Craigslist for $40. Guess what they came from? A '98 extended cab lowered 4/6! I have a source for the trim rings and center caps.

It took years getting into nicer and nicer trucks and here I am back to the basics, but I'm having a blast and feel young again. You just need to find a way to have your cake AND eat it! Keep the 06 and get another toy!

Did I mention I found a pair of drop LCA's for $60, just need to go get them. I won't have to trim anything to run the 15's that way.

Today I replaced the hinge pin and roller pins. The door shuts like the day it rolled off the line now. This is the rewarding kind of maintenance, even though I got a couple of stares from the neighborhood folk as my door was hanging from a cherry picker for an hour or so. I'm planning to do a write-up, but here are a couple of pics 'cause we all like em.

I can honestly say now that absolutely everything on this truck works, top-to-bottom, front-to-back.

This is like torture. I am wanting to upgrade my daily driver for something within the last decade or so. I found a really clean '96 2 door Tahoe locally, just not sure I need something like that for a 70 mile commute. One of these body style trucks are looking good as well.

Of course, if I would get up and do my LS swap, this might be a moot point......

Do eeet man!

So just more driving on this truck lately and despite my best hopes a light foot it gets 15mpg...yeah I wish I had a 5.3L after having 6 or 7 since my last obs. I found myself wishing today that I had held out for a 99-02 regular cab but then I snapped to and bought some stuff.

Flip kit is here, plus shock extenders, carrier bearing and shims. I got all of that from a board member for $125. I'll probably fabricate my own notch, so that leaves the front end and shocks. I'm probably going to go with DJM lower arms, because I'm not crazy about trimming the stock lowers to run 15's. They ride nice, I have a set on my '71. They make one that is for 4" drops, with the correct ball joint angles for drop springs.

Almost forgot. Got hail dings on the roof tonight as I was sitting in the driveway. My wife pulled in at the same time and we were trapped by the downpour and sat and watched helplessly while texting each other and wincing. I hope her new Suburban is ok, couldn't tell. Oh well, it didn't hurt as bad as when it happened to my '08!

Oh, and Low Elco if you're paying attention tonight I slapped the power steering pump and brackets on my '71 plus cleaned, sealed and re-installed the wiper motor and arms and a/c flapper. So there!

Awwwww maaaaaaannnn.... Sorry about the hail. If you were up here I could put you onto an awesome PDR guy. Congrats on the work, I didn't get squat done, I was Mr Mom last night. Sounds like its coming along!

Leevon. Real nice 99. That one has sure been taken care of.
I've been eyeballin some red ones to replace the 97 my daughter totaled. It is a 305 with 3.42 gear. Decent mileage, not powerful.
Down the road you could swap yours to the 5.3 but it's such a nice truck would you really want to?

LEEVON 08-20-2012 09:18 AM

Re: Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1999

Thanks, and I agree about the swap. I want too, but then part of me says why. It runs PERFECT.

As for the hail damage, it was worse than I thought. Hood, roof and bed rails are dinged. It's not hideous, most likely the casual observer wouldn't even see it but I know it's there. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, we have a $500 deductible, I'm guessing the PDR would run about this much. If I though I could wrap up getting the bed painted somehow I would though...

Well, I got truck A.D.D. again. She's going to a good new home tomorrow, where she will be well cared for...and probably get the drop and wheels I never gave her. She was the smoothest riding and quietest truck I've ever owned, including GMT800/900's. I traded for this:

Hey Leevon. Up in MO now?

I would love to trade my 92 K1500 for a 99...if nothing but for the dash. I hate the dash in the 92. cracked...no replacement (really) etc.

Other than that the 92 is perfect...never breaks down.

See ya round
Tim
